The widow who gave away all of her bread to the poor lost the last of her wheat at the river. Embittered, she went to ask the Rabbis at the synagogue why this had happened to her.

As she was relating the events of the day, ten wealthy men walked into the shul and informed the Rabbis that they had come to give a large sum of money to charity. When the Rabbis asked them what was behind their generosity, they related the following tale:

“We were rowing down the river and were already approaching the city when our boat hit some sharp rocks. Our boat sustained a large gash, and we knew we were going to go down any minute, so we made a promise; if we survived this and reached dry land, we would give all of our masser money to charity. Fascinatingly enough, the water suddenly stopped seeping into our boat.”

could the water stop flooding your boat if there was a hole in there? Go back and check.”

The Rabbis instructed the widow to wait for the men to come back. Sometime later, the men returned, hauling a bag of wheat into the shul. “This was the bag that clogged the hole,” they said, “and prevented our boat from sinking.”

Indeed, it was that widow’s sack of wheat. The Rabbis instructed the wealthy men to give the woman the money they had intended for charity. After all, it was rightfully hers. It was her sack of wheat that had saved their lives.

Ingredients:

1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breasts cut into 1-inch pieces

2 tbsp. flour

1/8 tsp. ground black pepper

2 tbsp. olive oil

1 small onion, chopped

1 tsp. minced garlic

1 29-oz. can chopped tomatoes

2 tbsp dried basil

1 16-oz. box pasta (penne, bow tie or ziti)

Instructions:

Coat chicken pieces in flour and pepper.

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add chicken, onion and garlic. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, until chicken is no longer pink and onions are clear.

Add chopped tomatoes and basil. Reduce heat to simmer. Cover pan, and let simmer for 15 minutes.

While sauce is simmering, prepare pasta according to package directions in a large saucepan.

To serve, pour sauce over pasta.
