    Legion’s Oxford Demands VA’s Wilkie’s Ouster

In February, American Legion National Com-

mander James W. “Bill” Oxford called on Con-

gress to investigate allegations that senior

leadership at the Department of Veterans Af-

fairs attempted to retaliate against a veteran

for reporting asexual assault at the VA Medi-

    cal Center in Washington, D.C.

On Thursday, the VA’s Inspector General report-

ed that VA leadership did not follow up or en-

sure the medical center had been imple-

    menting VA’s anti-harassment and anti-sexual

assault efforts. Oxford issued the following

statement concerning the findings of the IG:

“The American Legion has long supported

legislation that brings accountability to the De-

partment of Veterans Affairs. We have also

called for the equal and respectful treatment

of women veterans. It is unfair to expect ac-

countability from the nearly 400,000 VA em-

ployees and not demand the same from its

top executive. It is clear that Secretary Robert

Wilkie failed to meet the standard that the veter-

an who came forward with the complaint de-

served. VA’s own website includes a pledge to

Stand Up to Stop Harassment Now! The doc-

ument states that VA is ‘committed to a har-

assment-free health care environment for eve-

ryone and will not tolerate harassment of any

kind.’ Clearly, that did not occur in this case.

    VA Begins Covid-19 Vaccinations

WASHINGTON — The Department of Veterans Affairs

(VA) will begin COVID-19 vaccinations this week at 128

additional sites using the Moderna and Pfizer COVID-19

vaccines. On December 18, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an Emergency Use Authorization of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, which is the second COVID-19 vaccine to be authorized.

“Having a second COVID-19 vaccine will enable us to reach more facilities and vaccinate more health care per-sonnel and Veterans in additional parts of the country,” said VA Secretary Robert L. Wilkie. “We continue to imple-ment our COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Plan and are grateful to be one step closer to seeing the end of this pandemic.”

Per Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) rec-ommendations, VA will continue to vaccinate health care personnel, as well as community living center and spinal cord unit residents. As vaccine supplies increase, VA’s ulti-mate goal is to offer COVID-19 vaccinations to all Veterans and employees who want to be vaccinated.

113 VA Medical Centers (VAMCs) and outpatient clinics

will receive limited Moderna COVID-19 vaccine supplies

this week. They include:Manchester VA Medical Center

and the VA medical center Jamaica Plain, (Boston) Ma.

    Wilkie ouster from pg1

During one of my visits to a VA hospital, Oxford

said, “I was asked to sign the same pledge and

    gladly did so.

By the promises set forth by his own depart-

ment, The American Legion believes Secretary

    Wilkie should resign.

Wilkie’s top lieutenants Pam Powers, James

Hutton and Curt Cashour should also step down

because of their roles in this violation of trust.”

    SENIOR VICE COMMAND-Coronavirus Meeting Policies

We have resumed regular monthly meetings. Our

next meeting will be Tuesday January 5 at 1900

    hours.

We continue to observe the mandated COVID-19

    protocols.

Please bring a face covering with you and wear it

for the duration of the meeting.

We will have hand sanitizer for your use when you

enter the building and before you take your seat.

Sit at least six feet from the nearest person to

    maintain social distancing.

If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, in-

    cluding:

    • Fever.

    • Respiratory symptoms such as sore throat,

runny nose, nasal congestion, cough, or short-

    ness of breath.

    • General body symptoms such as muscle aches,

    chills, and severe fatigue.

    • Changes in a your sense of taste or smell.

If you answered yes to any of these questions,

House Committee The House Committee did not meet in December but here is what is happening. Reconstruction of the outside deck that was de-stroyed by fire is still pending. Work will probably not take place until the spring season. The House Committee has voted to have J. Law-rence Hall plumbing install the plumbing for the bar and Johnson Electric to install wiring for the bar. Work has not yet been scheduled. A major clean-up in the post lounge, on the 3rd floor, the basement floor, and the entrance is in progress with Bob Winkler in charge of work. I want to thank Ken Sinclair and other members of his family for helping Bob with the work on the past several Saturdays. All the drop ceilings in the lounge and restrooms have been repainted. Bob built a shelf to hold the cable box for the lounge TV. Bob will repair the broken louver in the men's room door. Bob built a new floor for the walk-in beer keg cooler in the lower floor and fixed the lighting in the cooler. We just need to get the compressor charged and tested. The lower hall only has the rotted corner in the far corner to be repaired. That hopefully will be finished in a week or two, then, Bob (with a little help from his friends) will hang the documents that were in the big hall in the lower hall so everyone can read them. They will be under lighting like a gallery would hang them, at face level for ease of reading. It should make for a stunning display when fully lit. With the help of Ken and family, Bob has re-moved the old smoke-eaters from the third floor hall. That puts us at what else needs to be done, on the third floor. Along with finishing the hall wall painting, we need to clean and refinish the hall hardwood floor. Continued on Pg4
