L inda Kitson Pacilio of

MarketPlace Interior Designs in Summit was recently awarded a Silver Award for Design

Excellence in the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) New Jersey Chapter’s 2014 Design competition. Kitson’s winning space was selected anonymously by a panel of distinguished professionals from outside New Jersey.

ASID is the largest, oldest and leading organizations for the advancement of professional interior design. Through education, knowledge sharing, advocacy, community building and outreach, ASID strives to demonstrate and celebrate the power of interior design to change people’s lives.

Kitson’s award-winning space incorporates serviceability while appearing both simple and elegant. Above

the enamel-finish wainscot, the walls are upholstered in wool and linen with special sound absorbing materials. Light levels are easily adjusted.

“Delivering practical applications beautifully, to serve this young family, were paramount. We collaborated and exchanged ideas freely,” Kitson explained of her Morristown client. “We have a great working relationship.”

After 20 years working on home and commercial spaces, Kitson combined materials and expertise from both into a full-service interior design company based in Summit, and called it MarketPlace Designs. Linda serves clients throughout New Jersey and New York and beyond. Some of her work can be seen at www.MarketPlaceDesigns.com.

Linda Kitson Pacilio is an ASID Allied member, a member of the National Association of Home Builders, and a Certified Aging in Place Specialist. She can be reached at [email protected].

In The SchoolsSponsored by the Suburban Chambers of Commerce Foundation

Kent Place School senior Jessica Li of Chester has been named a semifinalist in the 2014 National Merit® Scholarship Program. The National Merit® Scholarship Program honors “students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies.” Congratulations to Jessica!

Approximately 1.5 million high school juniors entered the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which screened the program entrants based on their test scores. The number of semifinalists represents less than one percent of high school seniors in the United States.

To become a finalist, students must complete an extensive scholarship application that discusses their academic record, extracurricular activities, leadership skills and other honors they have received. The finalists will be named in the spring and summer of 2015.

Kent Place School in Summit is an independent, nonsectarian, college-preparatory day school, which for over 100 years has provided a superior education for young women who demonstrate strong scholastic and creative ability. Please visit Kent Place online at www.kentplace.org.

The Oak Knoll School of the Holy Child community was blessed recently with a visit from the Most Rev. Bernard A. Hebda, coadjutor archbishop of Newark, at the Summit school’s opening Mass of the 2014-15 year.

Archbishop Hebda was the celebrant and homilist at the Summit Catholic independent school’s annual Mass, which took place in the Mother Mary Campion Center for Performing Arts. Father Tom Dente, director of the Office of Divine Worship for the Archdiocese of Newark, also served as the master of ceremonies at Mass.

The traditional Mass symbolizes the official start of the new school year, which the archbishop called a “blessing,” and encouraged the students to embrace each and every day, with strong hearts and open minds.

“I know that God has a plan for each of you,” he said. “Thank you for your willingness to pray with me today that God may bless us with the gifts of the Holy Spirit.”

Head of School Timothy J. Saburn said the school was honored to have Archbishop Hebda leading the Oak Knoll community in prayer at its annual Mass, which is attended by all students, faculty, and staff.

Mr. Saburn called the Mass a unique, special event for everyone, noting it had been more than 20 years since an archbishop had been to the Summit campus.

Following Mass, the archbishop visited students in classrooms in both the Lower and Upper schools, and toured the 11-acre campus with two members of the senior class. The Archbishop inquired about the students’ daily life at the school, how they spent their summers, and their plans post-graduation.

Oak Knoll School of the Holy Child is an independent Catholic school enrolling boys and girls in kindergarten through grade six; and young women only in grades seven through 12. For more information about Oak Knoll, please visit www.oakknoll.org or call 908-522-8109.

Summit High School music students will canvas the City of Summit on Sunday, Nov. 2, between noon and 4 p.m., as participants in the Summit Music Parents Association’s (SMPA) annual campaign, Pledge Day. A fundraising tradition, the band, orchestra and chorus students will ask the community for financial support that is vital to the school’s music programs. All the money collected goes to support the excellent music program and is used to fund scholarships, replace instruments and equipment, and bring in renowned musicians to teach master classes. Pledge Day also helps subsidize music trips to festivals and competitions, as happened last spring when the Summit High School’s marching band, “The Pride of Summit,” showcased their talents at Walt Disney World in Florida.

In The CommunitySponsored by the Suburban Chambers of Commerce Foundation

Millie Cooper, a resident of Summit, recently had a chair she had inherited from her grandmother restored by the

SAGE Furniture Restoration Workshop in Summit. The workshop is located on the lower level of SAGE Eldercare at 290 Broad Street in Summit and is run entirely by volunteers who then give the proceeds of their craftsmanship back to older adults in surrounding communities via programs and services at SAGE.

“It took many workers at the workshop to breathe new life into this chair, but everyone who had a hand in the restoration treated the chair as if it were their own family treasure,” Millie noted. “I am most grateful.”

The chair was one of the Cooper’s few possessions that survived Superstorm Sandy nearly two years ago at their summer home in Little Silver, NJ and was also one of the few items that had been given to Millie from her maternal grandmother Adelaide. Following the storm, in which their home was filled with waist-high water, the chair was found in the bathroom. The home was destroyed.

“When Millie brought the chair into the workshop, I could tell that she was entrusting us with an irreplaceable family heirloom,” noted Al Kessler, Manager of the Furniture Restoration Workshop. “It took about six weeks for four workers to restore the chair to its original beauty, and we were glad that we could help. We treat every piece of furniture that enters our workshop as if it is our own.”

The workshop has offered fine-quality furniture repair at great prices since 1961 and serves as a major fundraiser to support SAGE Eldercare’s programs and services in the surrounding region. It is also one of the few places that offers re-caning and rushing of seat covers, which are both time-consuming and intricate weaving processes. Volunteers run the workshop and have gained their skills through years of woodworking and furniture repair as a hobby. For more information, call the workshop at 908-598-5531 or stop by between 9 am and 12 noon, Monday to Friday.

For more information on SAGE’s services for older adults and caregivers, please call 908.273.5550 or visit www.sageeldercare.org.

On October 20, Reeves-Reed Arboretum, located at 165 Hobart Avenue in Summit, will unleash a herd of goats on the steep sides of the Arboretum’s historic Daffodil Bowl to begin clearing away a year’s worth of wildflower growth, invasive vines and weeds, allowing for the annual restoration and replanting of the Bowl with bulbs for a spectacular spring show next year.

Why goats? “They’re basically nature’s lawnmowers and they eat all day,” said RRA’s Executive Director Frank Juliano. “And what a wonderful way to engage and educate our community about an eco-friendly process that ordinarily takes months of hard, hand-labor to achieve.”

The Arboretum has engaged Lawrence Cihanek, owner of Green Goats in Rhinebeck, NY, whose company oversees the use of goats as an environmentally

friendly and sustainable tool for clearing hard to manage areas.

In addition to treating the goats to a non-stop buffet, the Arboretum’s education and horticulture staff will use this opportunity to encourage other eco-land management practices. And, as an added incentive, visitors are being offered the chance to sponsor a goat and help support the Arboretum’s new “green goats’ initiative.” Just go to their website and click on the “green goats” link, and for $25 per goat, you can send a “kid” to the Arboretum! (Your sponsorship is fully tax-deductible.)

The goats will be on hand for about two

w e e k s , and they will certainly be the featured “guests” during the annual CELEBRATE FALL festival on October 26 at the Arboretum.

Three Arthur Murray Dance Studios (Kenilworth, Montclair, and Princeton) recently raised $7,600 to benefit the United Way of Greater Union County (UWGUC). This amount was raised through their event at the beginning of last month, “A Theatre Night, Broadway Tribute.” The special evening of dancing was held onstage at the Wilkins Theatre at Kean University in Union.

Danila & Nuna Kartashov are the owners of the Kenilworth studio, and they were happy to support the work of the United Way. A certificate of appreciation was presented to Arthur Murray Dance Studios for “for their support in Strengthening Families and building Stronger Communities.”

“Having such a prestigious partner to benefit the United Way was really a great opportunity for residents to enjoy the art of dancing while supporting the community as well,” exclaimed James W. Horne, President/CEO, United Way of Greater Union County. For more information on the United Way of Greater Union County visit www.uwguc.org.
