Buffalonians correlate the onset of autumn with the dawn of football season. We've accepted Labor Day as an indication that our next several Fridays and Saturdays will be spent supporting student-athletes before our attention turns to the pros on Sundays. We are – at times – fanatical over football!

Those with a historical knowledge of the National Football League certainly associate the title of this column with mercurial Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis. Yet it is a quote by Green Bay Packers legend Vince Lombardi that resonates the most with me as another season - and school year - is upon us:

"Gentlemen, we are going to relentlessly chase perfection, knowing full well we will not catch it, because nothing is perfect. But we are going to relentlessly chase it, because in the process we will catch excellence."

You see, Coach Lombardi was very good at this type of thing. An eloquent wordsmith, he needed only a fleeting moment to inspire his team to play to the best of their abilities, or in other words, to perform excellently.

At St. Joe's, we often refer to ourselves as "A Community of Excellence," a phrase wrought by 149 years of pursuing perfection - knowing from our biblical teachings that it's unattainable - and resultantly settling for excellence.

Excellence is all around us. It's in our classrooms, where a remarkable 140 underclassmen achieved first honors for all four semesters last

of-the-art science center - all of which are centrally located on our campus at 845 Kenmore Avenue.

All of this - our history, our accomplishments, our opportunities - is something to be proud of. There have been times over the last year when it has appeared to me that our younger students have lost some of that indefinable "St. Joe's Swagger." A portion of this may be attributed to the challenges that some of our sports teams endured last season, especially when viewed through our lens as the most successful program in Western New York Catholic School history. Decades of unparalleled success interspersed with a season or two that reinvigorates us to work even harder? Again, we strive for perfection and arrive at excellence.

As we approach the sesquicentennial celebration of St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute, let us - each and every one of us - do so with the spirit, pride and zeal that our school's rich tradition so rightfully deserves.

To quote Lombardi once more:"Individual commitment to a group

effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work."

We are not perfect; nobody is, but if we collectively strive to pursue perfection, we can procure excellence.

year. It's on our athletic fields, where St. Joe's has won an incredible 31 Supremacy Cups, more than any other school. You can find excellence in the religious zeal of our Christian Brothers, the concerted sounds of our Jazz Lab Band, the problem-solving abilities of our Math Team, and so on and so forth. We write it. We read it. We believe it.

The key to continuing our tradition of excellence is realizing that this standard will unremittingly be a challenge to maintain. Quite frankly, human nature inclines us to relent in our pursuit rather than to make it a relentless one.

Our faculty and staff consider it both a privilege and a responsibility to welcome, to inspire and - yes - to challenge each and every young man that walks through our doors. It is our philosophy that by doing so, each student has a legitimate opportunity to capture his own excellence.

It is up to our young men to recognize that these opportunities have been presented to them and to make the most of them while at St. Joe's. Thanks to the extremely generous contributions of the graduates that preceded them, current students can utilize a recently-updated black box theater and lecture hall, a one-year-old, all-weather athletic field complex, and a brand new, state-

A ceremony to bless and dedicate the Cullen Center for Excellence in Science and Residence for the Brothers of the Christian Schools was held at St. Joe's on August 30. Bishop Edward U. Kmiec and various community members gathered to celebrate the event, which signaled the conclusion of the school's most recent capital campaign.

Dedication Of The Cullen Center for Excellence in Science & Residence for the Brothers of the Christian Schools

Hosted by Board Chairman, Mark E. Brand '80, the dedication was also attended by donors from the St. Joe's community, faculty and staff and local dignitaries. Immediately following the formal program, the three-story facility was made available for the public to explore, with St. Joe’s students on hand to serve as tour guides in a casual, open house style setting.

The Cullen Center for Excellence in Science includes two floors of classrooms and laboratories, interfaced and equipped with state-of-the-art teaching aids, computer technology,

and scientific instrumentation, including digital microscopes, SMART boards, wireless computer networks, and gas chromatographs. Designated areas for chemical storage, lab preparation, and expanded space for team experiments present teachers with increased flexibility in curriculum presentation, and allow for hands-on science to occur on a daily basis.

Situated on the building’s third level, the new Residence for the Brothers of the Christian Schools provides the Brothers with dignified housing, suitable to maintain the 149-year presence of

their community as a vital influence on our campus. The residence features a private entrance, central chapel, contemporary kitchen, outdoor patio, dining area, all-purpose room, and seven bedrooms en suite.

All told, the Pride in our Past...Faith in our Future capital campaign, initiated in 2006, realized over $13.5 million - an unprecedented amount for St. Joe’s - with funds earmarked toward the construction of this facility, the all-weather Robert T. Scott, AFSC Athletic Field Complex, and, perhaps most importantly, bolstering the school's endowment portfolio and annual fund.

In his dedication remarks, Mr. Scott expressed his pleasure in being in able to provide a scholastic environment commensurate to the abilities of the young men of St. Joe's. "I am confident in saying that the campaign truly exceeded our hopes and dreams of building an even stronger school, a school which remains firmly dedicated to the mission we were originally founded for - the next generation of St. Joe’s students."

Thank you to the entire St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute community for helping to make this project a resounding success and furthering our school's model of academic excellence and organizational sustainability.

Bishop Edward U. Kmiec blesses the Cullen Center for Excellence in Science moments after the facility's donor recognition wall is unveiled.

Nothing quite fills a crisp autumn evening better than a community-wide get-together devoted entirely to athletics. Join us in kicking off another season of St. Joe's sporting events with our annual Sports Night!

St. Joe’s Sports Night is a vital part of the sports program, as it is the only athletic-specific fund-raiser held during the year. The proceeds from Sports Night directly impact all of our athletic programs – last year alone, this event raised more than $26,000.

This year’s Sports Night will be held on Friday, October 23rd at 6 p.m. at St. Joe’s. It will include the “Taste of St. Joe’s,” which is a light food selection from area restaurants, separate

raffles of sports–themed baskets, as well as the Big Money Raffle.

Sports Night tickets are $15 pre-sale and $20 at the door. Please contact St. Joe's at 716.874.4024 to purchase advance admission tickets ($15) or Big Money Raffle tickets ($25). Thank you very much for your support of our athletic programs!

For more info, please contact St. Joe's at 716.874.4024 or visit us online at www.sjci.com.

Sports Night: Friday, October 23, 2009

A new slate of Sports Hall of Fame inductees will join the class of 2008 on November 20.

Setting Sights on Our SesquicentennialWhen school commences in fall 2010, St. Joseph's

Collegiate Institute will officially begin celebrating 150 years of providing an unrivaled, Catholic, college-preparatory education to the young men of Western New York.

This year-long celebration will provide unique and tremendous opportunities for us to commemorate our storied past and prepare for a future of educational excellence and organizational sustainability. One of these opportunities, in particular, will come in the form of a book edited by Dr. Joseph F. Bieron '55, replete with photos and historical information. If you would like to be involved with this project, have old photos or stories for possible inclusion in the book, contact the Advancement Office at [email protected].
