Fourth of July Celebrations The Annual Colony Fourth of July was tons of fun! The day started with the “Anything on Wheels” parade led by Officer Matt Aragon.

Officer Aragon was a hit with the kids, passing out stickers and posing for pictures with his patrol vehicle after the parade. Many thanks to the Irvine Police Department and Officer Aragon for giving up his time on a busy day!

Next up were the lawn games. This year there was a “obstacle” course with three teams competing at the same time. Kids and adults enjoyed the challenge. If you missed out, come by next year because all agreed it was a lot of fun! Then, to cool off after all that running, was the traditional balloon toss event.

Then it was on to the pool for more fun and frivolity. The nickel toss started things off, followed by the watermelon toss. Finally the main event… the Raft Races! There were eight different race categories, and the winners of each event won movie tickets.

The Recreation Committee would like to thank the many volunteers who stepped up to help make the day’s activities possible. Many thanks to Lisa and John Fox, Patti and Aki Miyake, Linda Helgevold, Eric Tom, Kurt Kohlhase, Cecilia Lee, Eileen Tsai and a BIG thank you to the Colony Red Hots for running the Snack Bar so the Colony residents could enjoy the day and not even have to BBQ!

Landscape Committee

The tree trimming for the Ficus, Cupania and Eucalyptus along the Mall, East and South Mall have been completed. One of the trees along East Mall had been struck by a Waste Management truck and lost one of its large braches.

We have had a number of leaks in the Colony irrigation system in the last months and we would like to thank the members for getting them reported quickly so the water can be turned off. These include leaks at the walkway end of Chagall and along the East Mall. One of the leaks was a main line along The Mall which took a few days to repair. While it is not clear on how many days this was leaking the bill for the meter was very high as the amount of water used fell well over our allocation for the month. This becomes very expensive very quickly so please if you see something say something. Call Accell even after hours will get the ball rolling to find out where a leak is and getting it repaired.

We have identified one slow leak that seems to have been going on for sometime on the Provincetown meter. We are currently working with Bemus to find the cause of the leak, however it is not one that has come to the surface, so there is no visible sign of a problem. The amount of water used has clearly exceeded allocation. The meter is running slowly while the system is turned off so this indicates a leak somewhere under the street.

Bemus has been correcting a number of irrigation problems that had been left unresolved. This was causing some areas around the park, the pool and common areas on The Mall and the north walkway to not get proper irrigation. Some areas would be very wet next to areas bone dry. They are working to get these areas corrected.

Architectural Committee

The most recent board meeting saw the confirmation of the Architectural (ARC) committee members. The revised guidelines, which homeowners received in the mail, are still pending board approval. If you have any questions about Architectural guidelines please feel free to contact the board liaison, Myra Radlow, Eileen Tsai, the current chairman of the committee ([email protected]) or Accell. Any homeowner is always welcome to the monthly meeting which takes place at the clubhouse on the first Thursday of the month at 7p.m. Meetings tend to be short, effective, and efficient, so please be prompt.

For homeowners considering a major or architectural change in the exterior facing the street, applications can be obtained online at www.colonyirvine.com. Print and fill out pages 1-5, and attach photos and/or paint chips to help us understand

your project. A list of approved paint colors is posted on the clubhouse bulletin board, and color samples can be obtained from the committee chairman. Submit the application at the architectural meeting, to Accell, or directly to Eileen Tsai.

Please remember that signs are not to be placed on any public utility boxes, or the blue mailbox standing on the sidewalk in front of the clubhouse. If any of these are damaged, the homeowners, (us!) are responsible for the cost of repairs. Again if you have any questions, please contact the ARC committee.

Pool News The pool is heated until October 1st so come on down

and enjoy the day.

One of the lane line anchors broke and needed to be repaired. The pool was closed for two days while Auqatrends corrected

the problem. Apologies for any inconvenience this caused.

Colony Honey-Do List August – September 2013

As the heat waves of summer come rolling through, I sit and wonder how to keep my home cool without paying an arm and a leg to SCE. Here are some tips that might help you too:

Keep south and west-facing windows and curtains closed until the sun is no longer shinning directly on them. Curtains can be especially important, and mini-blinds can reduce solar heat gain by 40-50%. (Remember, this is not an aesthetics column, just some practical tips.)

If you have a lamp or light fixture with incandescent bulbs, turn it off. Incandescent bulbs put off a lot of heat!

Clean your air conditioner’s air filter every month during cooling season. Normal dust build-up can reduce airflow by one percent per week.

Plant a tree and enjoy the shade.

Install ceiling fans. As many as you like.

Install insulation and/or a fan in your attic to reduce the amount of heat entering your house from above.

Provide shade for your AC unit with an awning – as long as it cannot be seen from the street - or a plant. Make sure the unit still has lots of clearance for air circulation. This can increase your unit’s efficiency by 5-10%.

Movie Night The Colony Red Hots are sponsoring a Movie Night in the Colony Park, Saturday, August 3. Please bring your beach chairs or blankets to enjoy a movie under the stars. All Colony resi-dents and friends are invited! Popcorn will be provided. Movie: TBA Saturday, August 3, 2013 8:00 PM Colony Park
