Directives from the Chicago Board of Education
• In order to ensure that all students are college and career-ready, CPS is implementing three inter-related instructional improvement strategies for the 2012-2013 school year.

The Common Core State Standards
Mission Statement• The Common Core State Standards
provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them.
![Page 5: The Common Core State Standards August 28, 2012 Mr. Steven Guarnieri Mr. Keith Houghteling](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649ccc5503460f94995e76/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
The Common Core State Standards• The standards are designed to be
robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.
![Page 6: The Common Core State Standards August 28, 2012 Mr. Steven Guarnieri Mr. Keith Houghteling](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649ccc5503460f94995e76/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Portrait of a Common Core Student• They demonstrate
independence. • They build strong
content knowledge. • They comprehend as well as critique.

Portrait of a Common Core Student• They value evidence. • They use technology and
digital media strategically. • They come to understand
other perspectives and cultures.

Do these portraits reflect our students?
• At your table, have a brief (3-5 minutes) discussion about the qualities of a Common Core student and whether those traits are reflected in Simeon students.
• We shall share out after the discussion.
![Page 11: The Common Core State Standards August 28, 2012 Mr. Steven Guarnieri Mr. Keith Houghteling](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649ccc5503460f94995e76/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Common Core Students
How do we create a Common Core Student?
• We create units that directly impact the student’s learning of Literacy and Mathematics knowledge, skills, processes, and goals, using content as a vehicle to achieve these standards.
“I’m driving math!”

The Match Game• On each table are packs of Post-it notes. • Write down the courses you will teach
on the Post-it notes.• Also on the tables are Common Core
books from which you may review the headings or standards. (10 minutes)
![Page 14: The Common Core State Standards August 28, 2012 Mr. Steven Guarnieri Mr. Keith Houghteling](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649ccc5503460f94995e76/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
The Match Game• Then, after reviewing the different headings
for the Common Core Standards, place your course underneath any heading you feel will be addressed by your teaching of your course. (10 minutes) • It is likely that you will be placing your course
underneath multiple headings. • Note: There are two main categories of
Common Core Standards; LITERACY and MATHEMATICS.

The Standards for Mathematical Practice
• The Standards for Mathematical Practice are on
pages 6-8 of the CCSS Math book. • The high school standards for math are listed in conceptual
categories:
Number and Quantity (58-61)Algebra (62-66)
Functions (67-71) Modeling (72-73)
Geometry (74-78) Statistics and Probability (79-83)

Gallery Walk and Review• Now, walk over to the other set of boards and
review what your colleagues posted. • On your response sheet, write answers to the
following: 1. What did you find most striking about the postings? 2. What similarities or differences about the postings did you notice? 3. What opportunities for collaboration across disciplines did you see?
![Page 22: The Common Core State Standards August 28, 2012 Mr. Steven Guarnieri Mr. Keith Houghteling](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649ccc5503460f94995e76/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Conclusions• This is real, this is
happening, we are jumping in headfirst.
Teachers will have to balance this implementation with the practice (and testing of) the CRS standards.

The World of Possibilities (Back)
• After our discussion and review, write a reflection about what possibilities await us this coming year.
• Consider the following in your response: –How do you think the implementation of the
Common Core State Standards will change your teaching practice?–What support will you need to implement the
Common Core State Standards successfully?
![Page 25: The Common Core State Standards August 28, 2012 Mr. Steven Guarnieri Mr. Keith Houghteling](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649ccc5503460f94995e76/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Next Steps
• Please continue this conversation in departmental and course level meetings. • How will I help to
create a Common Core student?
![Page 26: The Common Core State Standards August 28, 2012 Mr. Steven Guarnieri Mr. Keith Houghteling](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56649ccc5503460f94995e76/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Leave the CCSS Books on the Table
• Each teacher will receive (or has already received) a Common Core book, so please leave the books on the table. • THANK YOU!
