RAFT RACE OLYMPIC FUNThis year the Deepings Raft Race will be Olympic themed and the main chosen

beneficiary will be worthy local sports clubs and associations. There may not be

any Royal Barges on the River Welland, but the organisers are hoping this year’s

Deepings Raft Race will be bigger and better than ever! The race will have an

Olympic theme to encourage everyone to make a raft and enjoy an afternoon of

fun and frolics on the river.

It takes place on Sunday 5 August and

promises to be the best sporting event

of the year, outside of the Olympics!

The Rotary Club of The Deepings are

organising the race again and this

year they are raising money for local

sports clubs, in keeping with the 2012

spirit of the Olympics.

There will be plenty to do with many

craft and trade stalls lining the river

and the fun fair in the town square.

Another highlight will be a flypast by

an aircraft from the Battle of Britain

Memorial Flight.

JACKSON WINS NATIONAL POOL CHAMPIONSHIP

14 year old Jackson Andrews of

Market Deeping is celebrating

being a national pool champion.

Jackson, who attends the Deepings

School, was representing the

Deepings Youth Centre when he

won the CYP (Clubs for Young

People) U14 title at Stephen

Hendry’s Snooker Club in Preston.

Having already beaten the champions from Wales, Sussex

and Lancashire, he reserved his best for the final with a

superb 3-0 victory.

To qualify for Preston, Jackson had first to make it through

a countywide Lincolnshire tournament (actually winning

the Lincolnshire U16 title) and then regional finals in

Northampton. The quality of his performances throughout

the various events, particularly when under pressure, won

many plaudits from the organizers.

Jackson is a regular in the fast-improving Lincolnshire U18

junior team and this season has a record of 11 wins from

12, including a victory over a current England player. If he

can maintain his form through the rest of the year he will

achieve his short term aim of an England trial in January.

If you are a budding pool champion, or just fancy potting

some balls, why not pop down to the Deepings Youth Centre

where Paul Hanson and his team would be delighted to

welcome you.

For further details of opening times and activities

call 01778 343 097.

ROTARY FUNCold winter winds, and the resulting lower numbers

attending the Rotary Club of Stamford St Martin’s ‘It’s a

Knockout’ in May, could not stop the fun that was had by

all, competitors and spectators alike. The competition

was so intense that two teams finished with the same

points so had to take part in a tie breaker.

Once again the event provided great fun, was a great team

bonding exercise and raised over £2,000 for St. Martin’s

Rotary Club Charities.

President elect Spencer Wrench, who chaired the organising

committee, praised the club members for the hard work

and commitment that they had shown to make the event

so successful. ‘Fun with a Purpose’ certainly is the driving

force of the club.

Anyone interested in joining the Rotary Club of Stamford St

Martins can get more details by visiting the club website

Ben, Phil the chef and team produced deliciously tasting dishes that were presented superbly.

The photographs of the food shown above speaks a thousand words – yes another cliché!

The menu was extensive without being overwhelming and the choice of beers, ales and wines would suit any connoisseur.

We went for lunch and the sun was shining, though not enough for us to enjoy the lovely gardens at the Bull &

Swan, however, the characteristic interior, was very cozy.We had a selection of mains and desserts, and as usual, shared each dish, so that we could sample the different flavours, though we had to order enough portions of their amazing twice cooked chips, to feed us all, as there isn’t much sharing in that department. All four of our plates were licked clean – the Caesar salad, the fish slate (you can order a slate for 2) and the Caramelised Onion & Goats Cheese Tart was perfect in size and taste, therefore, ensuring we left room for dessert. We ordered the Chocolate Fondant (Charlotte’s absolute favourite), Sticky Toffee Pudding (my absolute favourite), Crème Brûlée (Naomi’s absolute favourite) and the Apple and Blackberry cumble. All of which went down a treat.

All we can say is that, if you are looking for somewhere that pays attention to detail and serves REALLY good food, then you won’t go far wrong at the Bull & Swan.

Heidi Semple

This months food review took the Scene team to the Bull & Swan in Stamford. The term ‘great food served well’ is sometimes over used, but in this instance, it fits the bill perfectly.

Beer, Bands and Bouncy Castles – Deepings beer

festival goes largeThis year’s 9th annual Deepings Beer Festival on 27th and 28th July will be the biggest yet. With more real ales and scrumpy ciders arriving from across the country, plus hugely popular local bands on Friday and Saturday night - the event is expected to attract many real ale and music lovers from across Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Rutland.

The first Beer Festival held in September 2003 and was purely a bit of fun for rugby club members held inside the club with half a dozen barrels of beer and a great weekend was had by all so it was decided to run the event again the following September.

Since then the club have grown the festival to what you will experience this year, with more than 60 real ales, traditional scrumpy ciders, country wines and speciality lagers. it’s a real family affair, with the beer tent for Dad, the Pimms and wine tent for Mum and the fun fair for the children.

The event is run by volunteers from the Rugby Club and is provided to you free of charge thanks to the volunteers and the generous donations from local and regional companies.

The Deepings Beer Festival takes place on Friday 27th, from 15:00pm and Saturday 28th July from 12:00pm at the Deepings Rugby Club on Linchfield Road, PE6 9NN. www.deepingsbeerfest.co.uk

HEALTH, HAIR & BEAUTYHEALTH, HAIR & BEAUTY

Let your hair shine throughAnnie B Hairdressing has been based in Deeping Fast Tan on Bridge Street, Market Deeping, since February. Annie has over 12 years experience and is registered with the National Hairdressing Council offering peace of mind to her clients with her expertise, skills and professionalism.

I arranged an appointment with her for what is known as the ‘Annie Experience’! I firstly had a consultation with Annie where we discussed my skin and hair tones and also planned my new style, taking into consideration hair type , face shape and lifestyle, resulting in a tailor made make-over. Prior to my visit to the salon my hair was all one length and feeling lifeless, Annie recommended a more “shattered, choppy look” bringing my hair bang up to date and very on trend. She also gave advice on how to manage my new

look and even gave me a sample to take home! Annie is in particular an expert in restyling and colouring and her passion for this shines through. Throughout the process she is enthusiastic and makes you feel relaxed. She also takes her time with your appointment, so clients don’t feel rushed. Annie ensures she gives all of her customers the best value for money, with a cut and blow dry costing just £19.50! The whole experience was fabulous and I left feeling ‘Totally Annie’d’ as her existing clients say! Kim x

Sue Garford spent last year having cycles of chemotherapy and radiotherapy following a diagnosis of non-hodgkins lymphoma in March 2011. Her only symptom was a lump in her groin which she fortunately got checked out by her doctor. As a fit,non-smoker the cancer news came as a bolt out of the blue. However with support from the Robert Horrell Macmillan Centre in Peterborough and her family and friends, Sue battled through using her irrepressible spirit and sense of humour to see her through the dark days.

Her treatment involved the loss of her hair which was devastating but she bought a fantastic wig and fortunately

retained her eyelashes so could still apply her mascara! Sue believes it’s so important for a woman going through treatment for cancer to feel good about her appearance but knows from personal experience that being bald and feeling grotty does not help self confidence. Sue has now been in remission for 8 months and is looking forward to the future not only in her business, but her health too. She has returned to her running, and will this year enter the Great Eastern run in aid of Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall in October. So, when the lovely Sue suggested she pop over to the Scene HQ to give us all a facial and do our make-up, we jumped at the opportunity of some pampering! All 4 of us in the office were treated to a mini facial and then make-up was

applied to give us a natural look. All of the products felt really light on the skin and gave us all a lovely glow.

Sue is now a consultant for Proto-col collagen skincare, baked mineral cosmetics and natural nutrition. She does home parties, charity and events to demonstrate and sell these lovely products giving out freebies and advice too. Proto-col recently supported comedian John Bishop on his epic cycle/rowing/running for Sport Relief with their collagen supplements which boost the body’s natural levels of collagen and reinforce healthy joints.

Primary School’s Olympic Journey!

Market Deeping Primary School recently

welcomed Charlotte Best, 800m runner for Team

GB. Charlotte inspired the child to take part in

an afternoon of sponsored support, raising

money for both Team GB and the school’s sports

equipment.

As part of a whole school display and sport

day, a tracksuit loaned by a former Olympian,

a grandfather of two of the school’s pupils, was

available for children to see. He had participated

in the 1972 Munich Olympics as a 400m runner.

SUN, FUN AND LOTS OF CASH FOR CANCER

The sun had finally come out just in time for this year’s Race

for Life in Stamford, after months of training and requesting

sponsorship a group of local ladies were ready for their 5K run.

Elaine Allen organised the team of nine to take part in this year’s

Race for Life in Stamford with over 3,000 other runners, joggers and

walkers. All nine runners managed personal best times ranging from

25minutes to 38 minutes, an incredible achievement given the heat

and the hills!

The girls would like to day a big THANK YOU to all the magnificent

friends and family who gave so generously and to Unique Computer

Training who sponsored the team vests. A total of almost £3,500 was

raised for Cancer Research.

WHAT IS PSYCHOLOGY?Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and behaviour, it is how we feel, think, act and interact

individually and in groups. Psychology looks at all aspects of behaviour and with the feelings, motivations &

thoughts underlying that behaviour.

Most of us are interested in what makes people tick & psychologists, psychoanalyst, counsellors, therapists etc.

look at how this understanding can help solve major problems in society.

Psychology is a science and psychologists study human

behaviour by observing, measuring & testing, then

arriving at conclusions that are rooted in sound scientific

methodology. If you listen or read about psychologists,

the claims that they often make can be associated with

the terms ‘evidence’ or ‘research’, so their arguments are

mostly based on the results of studies, therefore they will

present arguments based on ‘evidence’ gathered through

‘research’. An example of this is;- “A ‘dark side’ to the

internet suggests a strong link between time spent surfing

the web and depression, psychologists have claimed”

(Daily Telegraph, 3 Feb 2010) This claim was based on

a study from Leeds University using a questionnaire sent

to young people and adults. A certain proportion seemed

to be addicted to the internet & an even higher proportion

of these internet addicts were found to be depressed.

Therefore researchers were able to draw conclusions about

possible links between internet use & depression. However,

it begs the question…What comes first? – are depressed

people drawn to the internet or does the internet cause

depression…???

Psychology is an academic discipline and an important

professional practice & is used in a wide variety of settings

to help people with all sorts of problems, working with them

to bring about an attitudinal change for the better.

Many of the challenges we face in the modern world

are rooted in human behaviour, therefore psychological

knowledge can help us find the solutions needed.

negative behaviours, thought patterns, fears, anxieties,

phobias or you just feel that there is ‘Something inside

you but outside your control’, Contact me now to

Track Cycling is intense and gripping

and an acute test of strength and

stamina. Races take place on an

indoor velodrome - a 250m wooden

oval, with straights banked at 12 degrees and the corners

banked at a steep 42 degree angle.

Canoe Slalom features David Florence, men’s C1and men’s

C2 slalom canoeist. David is an Olympic silver medallist

(Beijing 2008) and World Cup Series champion.

The finishing times are taken as the third rider crosses the

Athletics sees some familiar names, both from the UK

Usain Bolt in action. Our homegrown hopeful, more likely

to have his chance in 2016, is 18 year old Adam Gemili.

His performance in June in Germany put him top of the UK

rankings, but his age and experience is likely to lead him to

the World Junior Championships.

Garden SceneBy Joseph Whitehead www.gardenwiseadvice.com

The worlds sporting elite descends on our fair shores this month, most countries and certainly every one of the worlds continent s will be represented. This has made me think about how countries of the world have influenced our gardens over the centuries, by providing us with the myriad of hardy plants we can use in our own borders.

From the top two medals winning countries of China and the USA we have been blessed with some great garden favourites. For spring China gives us Magnolias, Camelias and Paeonies.

The USA in particular North America gives us prairie plants-• NewEnglandasters• Rudbeckias(coneflowers)• Solidago(goldenrod)• Helianthus‘lemonqueen’(sunflower)Mixed in with grasses you can create a wonderfully natural meadow feel.

For bold colour look to South Africa for Agapanthus, Kniphofias (Red hot pokers) and Osteospurnums.

SILVERSilver- Artimisia ‘Powis castle’, Brunnera ‘Jack Frost’, Silver birch-Betula utilis var. ‘Jacquemontii’

BRONZE

For dry and sunny spots in our garden we can look tothe Mediterranean for such gems as• Phlomisfruticosa• Cyclamen• Lavender• Cistus(Broom)

Lastly to add a splash of tropicallushness we can start with China for garden worthy bamboos like Phyllostachys aurea and the reliablyhardy palm Trachycarpus fortunei. From Japan we have Macleaya cordata‘Kelways coral plume’ with its delightful flowers and foliage, and for a sheltered spot Taiwan gives us Tetrapanax papyrifer ‘Rex’ with its huge tropical looking leaves.

Hundreds of athletes will be striving to win one of the elusive Olympic medals, so to celebrate this wonderful event why not add your own dash of gold, silver and bronze.

MOTORING

On start up, the diesel engine

sounds a little harsh but, on the

move, the engine noise doesn’t

overly intrude on any conversation

you might be having with your

passengers. The clutch is

surprisingly heavy for a mid-sized

family hatch and the ride is too

firm at times but, on the plus side,

the Mazda3 holds the road well

and the car cruises very nicely on

motorways.

The Mazda3 is big enough for

a family of four. Your adult

passengers won’t be stretching

their legs out in the back, but they

won’t be doing that in any medium

sized car. Access to the rear is

particularly good in the five door

version of the 3; if you’re a parent

of young children, you’ll notice that

the doors open wide enough for you

to lean in and secure your offspring

in their seats easily. Another tick in

the box for this Japanese-made car

THE MAZDA3 1.6 oil-burner is a perfectly

adequate hatchback. It pulls more powerfully

than you might expect, and the drive is

actually quite engaging.

is the load area – the boot is deep

and wide allowing, for example,

a folded pushchair to be lifted in

without any hassle.

Aesthetically, the Mazda3 is

appealing; in fact, it has had a

makeover for 2012, giving it a more

muscular, aerodynamic, look. It has

a new face, a different rear bumper

and it features up-to-the-minute

‘twist-spoke’ alloy wheels. Inside,

there are fresh materials and

Mazda’s designers have replaced

the previous silver colour of the

lower dashboard console with black.

controls have been ringed in satin-

to see.

As well as general improvements

to its appearance, and little tweaks

here and there to make it even

more driver friendly, the Mazda3’s

fuel economy has been enhanced.

If you’re careful, you can now get

a maximum of 65.7 mpg out of the

hatchback. This is impressive –

and largely due to the new model’s

refined aerodynamics.

The TS2 model comes well

equipped with front fog lights,

dusk-sensing lights and rain-

sensing front wipers. It also has

Integrated Bluetooth, a heated

windscreen and cruise control. But

you won’t get much change out of

£20,000 if you want a brand new

Mazda3 with this level of kit and

a turbo diesel under the bonnet.

The 1.6D TS2 will set you back

£18,295. Still, in today’s market,

that’s actually pretty competitive.

STAMFORD FEASTOrganiser of Stamford

Feast-The Big Lunch 2012

Ali Hawley-Smith said “We

did it… AGAIN! What can I say.

Stamford Feast-The Big Lunch 2012, held on Stamford

Meadows in early June, turned out to be even bigger and

better than last years. As estimated 12,000 visitors came

to the event throughout the course of day, an increase of

50% on last year’s 8,000.

Bunting and Union Jack flags were flown throughout the

day for both the multicultural aspects of the event and

the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Over 90 traders got into the

spirit of the event along with the weekend’s celebrations by

decorating their stalls to a very high standard this year and

the new Town Mayor Cllr Bob Sandal and local businessman

Vic Cozens kindly judged these concluding Woodlands Farm

to be the winner.

Ali said she would like to take this opportunity to thank

the event’s sponsors for their generous support, including

Lincolnshire County Council, Stamford Town Partnership

CIC, Stamford Town Council, Cummins Generator

Technologies, New College Stamford, Taylor Amusements,

Duncan and Toplis Accountants, Dawson’s Jewellers and

Antiques and Stamford Cookery School.

Ali added that a massive thank you goes out to her

fabulously dedicated volunteers, who once again did

themselves and Stamford proud. Tirelessly upbeat and

high spirited with big smiles on their faces all day, they

helped her make this event another flawless and a massive

success for their town, even reuniting misses puppies and

purses with their owners!

The island offers something for couples as well as families as Bermuda is so

safe and the sea and beaches so clean. Explore the island on the local buses

or hire a scooter sticking to the 30kmph speed limit! The pace of life is great

and really makes you slow down.

The island is surrounded by a fantastic coral reef that harbours colourful fish

and there are over 400 shipwrecks around the island, making for memorable

diving and snorkelling hot spots. The sailing is as equally good with a fantastic

selection of beautiful boats of all sizes, if only to admire from the quay.

Here are two fabulous resorts that are offering some fantastic deals. With

a daily direct service with BA taking under 7 hours from the UK and a great

climate all year round, what’s stopping you??

All the best bits of England with the added bonus of sunshine!!

Thanks to the warming

effects of the Gulf Stream,

Bermuda enjoys a warm,

comfortable climate all year

round. The locals are friendly

people who readily strike up

conversations with strangers.

There is also plenty of

distinctive local colour,

from a landscape of tidy

pastel houses to dapper

businessmen dressed in

Bermuda shorts. Afternoon

tea is still a strong pastime

enjoyed by all, and be sure

to enjoy a ‘dark and stormy’

made with Goslings Rum and

ginger beer, a Bermudian

classic.

THE REEFSSituated spectacularly above its own magnificent private

beach on the southern shores of Southampton Parish, The

Reefs offers deluxe accommodation and all the facilities

of a first class Bermudian resort with an informal, lively

and friendly atmosphere. The ocean facing rooms offer

superb views over the reefs and the turquoise waters of the

Atlantic. There is also excellent swimming and snorkelling

just off shore of the pink sand beach!

For families and friends travelling together we highly

recommend the 2 and 3 bedroom Club Suites, these units

are amongst the most exclusive in Bermuda.

BERMUDA ‘Feel the Love’

CAMBRIDGE BEACHESThis exclusive adult’s only resort is created in a cottage

colony style and sits on a private peninsula at the western

FREE ‘GOOD EGG GUIDE’ FOR CONCERNED PARENTS

OF NEW DRIVERSParents of young people who are learning to drive in Peterborough are being given a free copy of a new national guide that sets out safety messages to help prevent their children from being involved in a road accident.

Research undertaken by Good Egg Safety has revealed that 78 per cent of UK parents fear their son or daughter will be involved in a car crash. The ‘Good Egg Guide for Parents of New Drivers’ underlines the causes and consequences of collisions, information to help young people pass their driving test and tips on buying their first car, including securing motor insurance.

The survey also detailed that one in three mums and dads think their children drive too fast, while 10 per cent of parents worry their offspring will be tempted to send or check text messages behind the wheel. One in 10 parents are also concerned their child will drink or take drugs when driving.

Copies of the guide will be distributed to local schools, colleges and driving schools. For a free copy, email [email protected] or telephone (01733) 453576.

£You Earned it – Now Keep It.

We work hard to make our money, we scrimp and save to make a better life for ourselves and our families and then what happens? Just as we get to a point where life seems good a whole new set of threats and challenges appear.

104 Church Street | Market Deeping | Peterborough | PE6 8ALTel: 01778 342291 or 01778 341490 | Email: [email protected] Tancreds LTD are authorised & regulated by the Financial Services Authority. Reg No: 472792

As we get older we naturally think about enjoying retirement and leaving

something to the family to make their lives a little better after we have

gone. To do this we all know that we need to make a Will and invest

wisely, but we need to look at the threats to our wealth.

Threat One: World economic turmoil. If you have the answer to this then

you should call 10 Downing Street and share it immediately, otherwise

you should view the market uncertainty with some trepidation. Interest

rates are at an historic low and the need for high quality investment

advice is at an all time high. To navigate your savings and investments

through these uncertain times you need good advice from properly

qualified Independent Financial Advisors, call Tancreds on 01778

342291 for a free initial consultation.

Threat Two: The Taxman. If you have gained even modest levels of wealth,

through property, investments or even inheriting from your relatives you

will need to be aware that the tax man might want his share. Proper

planning can avoid unnecessary tax bills and in many cases we can

significantly reduce any liability to Inheritance taxes with some simple

and cost effective steps.

Threat Three: Long Term Care. One in three of us will need some form

of long term care as we get older. Good planning now can reduce the

burden that is likely to fall on your shoulders and in many cases could

protect your home and assets into the future.

Threat four: The cost of dying. Latest government estimates put the cost

of dying at over £7,000, this includes funeral charges and the legal costs

associated with probate. These costs are escalating at far more than

both inflation and savings rates. You could fix them now and save your

family money and heartache in the long run.

If you need help or advice call us today (01778) 342291, our

specialist pensions advisor will be happy to help, and remember

the first consultation is free and without obligation.

BOOKS

This months book recommendations with Freya North

The Man Who Forgot His WifeBy John O’Farrell Doubleday £14.99

A Humble Companion by Laurie Graham Quercus £16.99

I love this author so much I begged the publisher to allow me to write a quote for the book jacket. I’ve reviewed her previous

novels for the Scene – and I know you lot will adore this new novel. Once again, Graham takes historical events and characters and blends fact and exquisitely-written fiction seamlessly. A Humble Companion is set in the time of George III and focuses on

I love John O’Farrell – he’s brilliantly funny, his characters are so perfectly observed but his stories are always so moving too. His novel, The Best A Man Can Get is one of my all time faves. The Man Who Forgot

His Wife is about just that – Vaughan is a typical bloke having a midlife crisis in his 40s which results in sudden and total amnesia. He can’t remember a thing – certainly not that his marriage was in trouble. In fact, he’s forgotten he even has a wife. However, when he meets the

woman he’s apparently divorcing, he falls madly in love with her. But his soon-to-be ex wife has very clear memories of their 15 years of marriage and she has no desire to relive them. Vaughan will do anything to turn back the clock. You’ll laugh out loud – and cheer for the characters.

RumoursBy Freya North Harper £7.99

Rumours is my 12th novel, based in Hertfordshire where I live. It’s set around the impending sale of Longbridge Hall, a small stately home - and the effect this has on the villagers whose lives have long been intertwined with it. The heroine, Stella, is the agent trying to sell the place on behalf of elderly Lady Fortescue – eccentric, feisty

and a little terrifying. Stella is a single mum, very guarded about her past and she needs every penny of the commission she might earn. I have to admit being more than a little in love with the hero, Xander – he’s attractively stroppy. He grew up on the Longbridge Hall estate and his secrets and memories are not for

WHAT I’VE WRITTEN

sale. He’ll do anything to stand in Stella’s way - anything but fall in love of course. Researching this book was eye-opening and fun – I was able to snoop around some incredible country mansions and of course I kept my ear to the ground and my eyes peeled to glean the gossip and shenanigans of village life.

GIVEAWAY – The City Scene have three signed copies of Rumours, by Freya North, to giveaway. To enter, email [email protected] with just a few words on why you would like to win Rumours. Closing Date 24 July.

the domestic side of royal life as well as a fascinating and crucial time in history. It is recounted by one of the princesses ‘companions’ - the bright and ballsy Nellie and it’s funny, touching and in some ways so contemporary too.
