The Competition

The International Guitar Competition Maurizio Biasini (cciMB) crosses the Atlantic for its 3rd edition, to be held at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) in the USA, from January 14 – 17, 2016. Organized to promote the musical career of talented young guitarists, the cciMB alternates biennially between centers of great musical tradition: Bologna, Italy (2011), Basel, Switzerland (2013) and San Francisco, USA. The winner of the competition will receive a cash prize of $ 12’000, an invitation to perform a recital in Switzerland (Rising Stars series of the Allgemeine Musikgesellschaft Basel, 2017/2018) as well as other concerts in Italy (Bologna) and France (Festival International de Guitare de Paris, 2016). Through an online video audition procedure, 12 semifinalists will be selected by an international Jury of renowned guitarists and musicians: David Tanenbaum (USA), Stephan Schmidt (CH), Gérard Abiton (F), Marco Vinicio Carnicelli, Alberto Martelli and Walter Zanetti (I). In the final round the three finalists will play a guitar concerto accompanied by the SFCM Orchestra and premiere a commissioned composition by Sergio Assad.

THE COMPETITION

Maurizio Biasini was an outstanding scientist who made important contributions in experi-mental condensed matter physics and published in many international scientific journals. However, music played an equally important role in his life. He received his diploma in classical guitar with first class honours from the Bologna G. B. Martini Conservatory in 1979 and continued playing the guitar and giving concerts for the rest of his life. In the same year, he also obtained his degree cum laude in Physics from the University of Bologna. Since 1983 he was employed as a Senior Scientist at the Italian research agency ENEA in Bologna and in 1996 he concluded his studies with a PhD in Physics at Bristol University. In 2003 he moved to California – together with his wife and his two sons – where he worked as a visiting research scientist at the University of California at Riverside and San Francisco. Maurizio passed away prematurely in 2008. His cosmopolitanism and his passion for science, research and music greatly impressed everyone who knew him.

Founded in 1917, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) is the oldest conservatory in the American West and has earned an international reputation for producing musicians of the highest caliber. Its faculty includes nearly 30 members of the San Francisco Symphony as well as Grammy and Latin Grammy Award-winning artists in the fields of orchestral and chamber music performance and classical guitar. The Conservatory offers its approximately 400 collegiate students fully accredited bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in composition and instrumental and vocal performance, providing exceptionally high standards of musical excellence and personal attention. The SFCM was the first institution of its kind to offer world-class graduate degree programs in chamber music and classical guitar. The Guitar Department, chaired by David Tanenbaum, occupies a prominent position in the Conservatory. SFCM faculty and students give nearly 500 public performances each year, most of which are offered to the public at no charge. COMPETITION PROGRAMThe competition is open to solo guitarists of all nationalities, born after January 1st 1980, who are at the outset of their career. Please review the Rules and Regulations (Art. 5) before submitting your video (preliminary round).

> Preliminary round An unedited video recording of the following repertoire: > Heitor Villa-Lobos: a choice between Etude III, VII or IX (Ed. Max Eschig, edited by Frédéric Zigante)> Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco: one of the 24 Caprichos de Goya para la guitarra, opus 195 (Ed. Berben)> Manuel Maria Ponce: Sonata romantica, 1st movement (Ed. Schott, edited by Segovia) > Free choice piece(s) not to exceed 5 minutes

> Semi-final round An individual program of up to 25 minutes which includes the following pieces:> Johann Sebastian Bach: two dance movements or one prelude and one dance movement from the four lute suites (Suite BWV 995, 996 ,997, 1006, any edition). The prelude may also be taken from BWV 998 (any edition)> Sergio Assad: commissioned composition (available by June 2015) The individual program should include at least one composition from a different stylistic period than those of the mandatory program. Pieces played in the preliminary round may not be repeated.

> Final round An individual program of 30 minutes which includes the following composition for guitar and orchestra:> Joaquin Rodrigo: Concierto de Aranjuez (Ed. Schott or Ed. Joaquin Rodrigo)

In addition, the program must include the commissioned composition by Sergio Assad (available by June 2015). Pieces played in the preceding rounds may not be repeated.
