What is Axtra® PHY?

Axtra®PHYisapatentednew,uniquebacterialphytasedevelopedbyDaniscoAnimalNutrition.Axtra®PHYissourcedfromaButtiauxellaspeciesbacteriumandisexpressedinaTrichoderma reeseifungus.

What is phytate?

Phytate,alsoknownasphyticacidandinositolhexaphosphate(IP6),isthemainnaturalstoreofphosphoruscontainedinvariableamountsinplants.Phosphorusisanessentialmineralbutwhenboundindietaryphytateisinaccessibletomonogastricanimalsastheylackthedigestiveenzymephytase.

Why is phytate a problem?

Phytateisbothapotentialphosphorussourceandan‘anti-nutrient’becauseofitsabilitytobindtoessentialnutrientsneededbytheanimal.Intheupperdigestivesystem,atlowpH,phytatebindstoproteinsandaminoacids.Furtherdownthedigestivesystem,athigherpHlevels,phytatebindstomineralssuchascalciumandtraceelements.

Phytateinterfereswithdigestionandstimulatestheanimaltoincreaseitsproductionofdigestivesecretionswhichisanenergyandnutrientconsumingprocess.Thenetresultisareductioninanimalperformance.

Furthermore,unabsorbedphytatephosphorusisexcretedbytheanimal,creatingamajorproblemfortheenvironment.

How does phytase help?

Phytaseenzymescleavephosphorusandtheassociatedboundnutrientsfromthephytatemoleculereducingitsanti-nutrienteffects.ItisveryimportantforphytasetostartworkingrapidlyatlowpHlevelswhicharefoundintheupperdigestivesystem,e.g.pig’sstomachandpoultrygizzard.Thisminimizestheanti-nutrienteffectsofphytatethroughoutthedigestivesystemandmaximizesthetimeavailablefortheanimaltoabsorbthereleasednutrients.
