The Complete Portrait Photography Guide – 3 email PLS – New Customers EMAIL #1 Subject line- Does That Two-Year-Old Scare You? Greetings- Life is good! How are you? Today, I’m here to talk to you about a subject that generally scares the living daylights out of most new photographers. PORTRAITS! Photographers (newbies) often gravitate toward subjects that don’t cry, throw things, or refuse to do whatever is asked of them. Am I right? Do you have lots of photographs of barns, fences, plates of food, and landscapes? But portraits- hmmmmm- not so much. Figure 1 https://www.flickr.com/photos/misgoddess/ We’ve all witnessed a photographer struggling to get a portrait. It might have been a school session, a wedding, a newborn, or even a family reunion. And it’s not just the kids that are always the issue- there’s the ornery old grandfather- the busy CEO- the family members that don’t feel like having their picture taken- etc., etc., etc. So, why do we even bother?

We’ve all witnessed a photographer struggling to get a portrait. It might have been a school session, a wedding, a newborn, or even a family reunion. And it’s not just the kids that are always the issue- there’s the ornery old grandfather- the busy CEO- the family members that don’t feel like having their picture taken- etc., etc., etc. So, why do we even bother?

Creating a great portrait is one of the most satisfying endeavors in photography. Human beings are fickle creatures. It requires interaction (on our part as the photographer) with an unknown perimeter (the subject). We can’t control them (even if we know them intimately- such as our own children). We can only try to understand the subject’s inner-being (that’s part of the process), on THAT particular day, and at THAT particular moment, and work it out with them- while trying to create something awesome with our camera.

The challenges are what make it so rewarding! Have you ever heard of Henri Cartier-Bresson? He is one of THE MOST famous photojournalists to have ever walked the planet. He took photographs of thousands of people. Here’s what he said about creating portraits- “The most difficult thing for me is a portrait. You have to try and put your camera between the skin of a person and his shirt.” – Henri Cartier-Bresson You see? Challenging even for him! But, I know that you’re up to the challenge, and you have the desire, and you want to capture magnificent portraits of your family and friends… Which is why I want to tell you about our latest book.

The ‘Portrait Photography Guide’ by Kent DuFault. (Insert Book Cover AND landing page link) This book will take you far beyond basic lighting setups. It provides the kind of tips, and tricks, that can only come from a photographer with decades of experience. Here are a few of the many topics covered in this book-

ü How to get kids to work with you (not against you) ü Proper planning (don’t fumble around in front of your subject(s) ü Where to look for good light (or, how to make good light quickly) ü Different techniques for different types of portraits (a family portrait is not a

business portrait) ü Posing (don’t put a woman in a masculine pose- or the reverse) ü How to tell a story (don’t just set up some lights and snap a picture- say something

about the subject) This book will help guide you into becoming a top-notch portrait photographer. I guarantee it! In fact, I’m so sure of this, that if you aren’t 100% satisfied with your purchase- I will give you your money back! How can you go wrong? And don’t forget- Portraits are a GREAT way to start using photography as a means of putting some cash- back INTO your bank account- even if you don’t want to turn Pro. There is a high demand. Cheers, Brett

P.S. – Great portraiture is as much about knowing a little psychology, and being a mother hen, as it is about knowing cameras and lighting. You will learn it right here! EMAIL #2 Subject line- You Don’t Need a Fat Wallet to Do This Hi- So, yesterday we started talking portraits and our new portraiture book. And, last night it occurred to me- there might be another aspect of portraiture that scares new photographers. Cost! We’ve all seen the images, (or the movies), with the super decked-out portrait studio: the one that has lights hanging everywhere, and a gazillion power cords, and wind machines, and dozens of people standing around staring at some poor model. But, it doesn’t have to be like that in order to create memorable portraits. Have you ever heard of Gordon Parks? He was a staff photographer for Life Magazine for decades. He was world-renowned for his portraits.

I read a quote of his once that I will never forget- He said, “I believe, that I created some of my best work with a simple Kodak Brownie camera.”
