This book provides a basic and general reading regarding the Islamic Criminal Law, which is part of the Shariah Law. In the

classical textbooks of fiqh, criminal law is not regarded as a single, unified branch of the law. Provisions regarding offences mentioned in the Quran and Hadith constitute violations of the claims of God (the right of Allah the Almighty), with mandatory fixed punishments. These offences are apostasy (riddah), highway robbery (hirabah), unlawful sexual intercourse (zina), theft (sariqah), the unfounded accusation of unlawful sexual intercourse (qazaf) and drinking alcohol (syurb khamr). Provisions for offences against another person, i.e. homicide and wounding, are subdivided into, those regarding retaliation (qisas) and those regarding financial compensation (diyat). And they are provisions concerning discretionary punishment of sinful or forbidden behaviour or of acts endangering public order or state security (ta’zir). Here, the author discusses the various concepts adopted in the Islamic Criminal law. Simple comparisons are made against the civil law in Malaysia. Included are the thoughts and opinions from the various schools of jurisprudence (mazhab) which reveal the richness and the variegation in the Islamic legal discourse.

The Search for Unity and Political AscendancyWhile much has been written about the rule of the ‘white rajahs’ in

Sarawak and about the development of politics in this part of Malaysia state since independence, Malay Politics in Sarawak is the first study to focus on the evolution of the Malay community in the crucial years, from the cession to the British Crown in 1946 to independence in Malaysia and after. The author first sets the background of Malay society and the changes brought by Brooke rule, then traces the evolution of Malay politics as they emerged from the trauma of the ‘cession controversy’ which split the Malays community down the centre. How this split was eventually healed and the Malays found a united voice through the Parti Bumiputera forms the main theme of this book and casts light on the present orientation of politics in the state. As such the book will be required reading for all those who wish to understand the comtemporary scene in Sarawak-Malaysia Politics.

This book is about a colonial state on the island of Borneo, known for its humanitarian ethos, which nonetheless depended on unpaid levies

of headhunting warriors to enforce its security goals. The rulers were the British “White Rajahs” of Sarawak; the warriors were Ibans, members of what remains Sarawak’s largest ethnic group. The peculiar collaboration between them left a lasting imprint on the later development of what is today a state of Malaysia. Rajahs and Rebels resulted from another unusual collaboration, between an American graduate student (Pringle) and the future Curator of the Sarawak Museum, Benedict Sandin. Each helped the other to shed new light on the Iban past in two books; Sandin’s was entitled The Sea Dayaks of Borneo before White Rajah Rule. Pringle has written a new introduction to this new edition of Rajahs and Rebels, looking back on the idyllic time he and his wife spent in Sarawak in 1965-66 and his work with Benedict Sandin, and noting what he might have said differently had he written the book today.

The ethnic Melanau in Sarawak can be divided into six different groups which are: Melanau Mukah, Melanau Dalat, Melanau

Oya, Melanau Matu-Daro-Rejang, Melanau Ba’ie (Bintulu),Melanau Balingian and Melanau Miri. The list of words and phrases in this booklet was compiled by a New Zealander, Ann Appleton, who had came to lived among the Mukah Melanau as part of her PhD fieldwork in anthropology in the early 2000s. The word and phrase list conforms to Melanau as it is spoken in the kampongs in and around Mukah town, hence “Mukah Melanau” in the title. While a number of different Melanau dialects exist and are used throughout the wider Melanau coastal region [the differences particularly apparent between communities situated on the different rivers of the region], Mukah Melanau is widely understood throughout the region. This simple, handy booklet is useful for those who are interested in the dialect.

The images displayed and described in this pictorial book depicts the remarkable collections of Borneo’s fantastic flora and fauna,

particularly those of Sarawak’s mangrove swamps at Kuching Wetlands National Park. The rich and colourful presentation of candid photos serve as witnesses that mangroves are not always the inhospitable barren environment imagined, but are home to a wonderful variety of creatures with unusual and extraordinary adaptations. A number of magnificent mammals and birds make their home in the park; these include several endangered species, some of which are endemic to Borneo, and a few migrant visitors. To the many nature’s lovers out there, this handy pictorial booklet is a must have.

When Alfred R Wallace, a reknown British naturalist landed in Kuching, Sarawak, in February 1855 he was astonished to

see the rare Orang Hutan (Pongo pygmaeus) and he passionately described the killing of the species for his collection which were sold to European museums. It was then the 19th century period of wildlife super abundance in fabulous prime habitats. 150 years later, there is more human population with a variety of demands: various agricultural products are needed to feed the increasingly hungry populations, more houses for shelter and roads to serve the demand of a global market economy. Consequently, wildlife gets displaced and encroachment of humans on what use to be their territory renders certain species a nuisance. Today, several species of mammals in Malaysia have gone extinct: Manis palaeojavanicus, Rhinoceros sondaicus and Bos javanicus. A few species, such as Dicerorhinus sumatrensis, Elephas maximus, Panthera tigris, Cuon alpinus, Tapirus indicus, Sus barbatus, Bos gaurus and Capricornis sumatraensis are experiencing localised extinction. More animals are being wiped out compared to representative samplings for museum collections. Now, in order to study those rare specimens that have gone extinct, we must pay the high price of travelling to Europe or United States and pay compensation for the opportunity to examine rare specimens with pricy bench fees set by those museums in foreign countries. Thus, these specimens collected and deposited by local biologists in the UNIMAS Zoological Museum is to serve as local reference material for future biologists, students, and the younger generations. With the current rate of deforestation, this catalogue will some day be very useful to remind us of our diverse heritage, DNA ancestry, and the natural history of our shrinking tropical rain forest.

Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) was established in 1992. As a relatively young university competing with the earlier established

university, and later, the many established local universities in Malaysia, it knows that its approach needs to be innovative and is not confined to the usual practice of the day in order to attract quality students to fill its courses. So, what is the factor that attracts students to a particular university? Specifically, as revealed in this booklet, what is the factor that takes the students through UNIMAS gate? Such investigations are not new abroad, especially in the market driven western university, but it is the first in Malaysia. This monograph is a result of a concerted effort of a group of researchers at UNIMAS who felt that there is a need for UNIMAS to take a proactive approach to investigate the many factors that could have influence students decision to enter its courses. Even though the focus here is only on UNIMAS, the approach/method could serve useful for researchers of other universities who would want to identify their attractiveness among potential students.

This book is prepared primarily to help the students studying in Phase 1 of the medical programme at the Faculty of Medical and Health Science,

Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), to gain basic anatomical knowledge that is required for physical examination and diagnosis of diseases. The format of the book reflects the Objectively Structured Practical Examination (OSPE) conducted in the Medical Programme at UNIMAS where the basic sciences are integrated with the clinical sciences through the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach. There are 75 illustrations in this book comprising photographs of anatomy models and bones, hand drawings and photomicrographs of paraffin embedded tissue specimens that are part of the teaching materials at the medical faculty. This is a useful guide to students as each station in this book deals with not only anatomy and allied sciences, but also with physiology, biochemistry, orthopaedics and general medicine; so students have to think of each question or station in an integrative manner before they attempt an answer. The integrative nature of each OSPE station which is shown in this book could serve as model for lecturers to construct their own OSPE stations. This book, therefore, is a must have to the Medical students and lecturers who are involved in Problem-Based Leaning Programme.

Akibat urbanisasi, kebanyakan petempatan komuniti Sama-Bajau di Asia Tenggara terintegrasi dalam bidang kuasa urban. Walaubagaimanapun, ia

To many urban Malaysian who commute daily to work, the daily encounter with traffic congestion is an unwelcome affair. When traffic is reduced

to a crawl, or worst a halt, the many delays translate to not only time lost in traffic; it indirectly involve lost of money to keep the system running on the road. Add the unnecessary continuous emission of exhaust fumes, an unhealthy air cocktail is produced to pollute the air; which also contributes to global warming. This booklet, which is an adaptation of the author’s Inaugural Lecture presentation, discussed several strategies to reduce traffic congestion, tackling the issues concerning the design of roads and the various related facilities. Also discussed, are the strategies to reduce traffic accidents in Malaysia. It is not just a read to the traffic engineering community, traffic planners and geographers; but also an interesting read to the many commuters who wish to understand their daily affair with the roads in Malaysia.

The increasing number of research studies in social sciencesand education led to an increase in the amount of empirical

studies. As a result, it is difficult to draw an overall conclusionwith regards to the effectiveness of the studies being conducted.Hence, with ‘meta-analysis’, the researchers and the socialscientist or the policy makers would be able to synthesize theinformation gained from the empirical evidences to support orassist them in decision making and support their findings. Thishandbook will address the application of meta-analysis usingthe research on metacognition and reading comprehension asan illustration in answering the research questions common tosocial science and education. Voices of The Crocker Range Indigenous CommunitiesSabah is a monograph which attempts to capture the

“Peoplespeak” dimension of the people environmentrelationship of the Sabah Crocker Range society. Whilst themain social actors are those from the Kadazan Dusun of Ranauand the Muruts of Tenom are also present. These are “SocialNarratives” of transition of indigenous people and communitiescaught between tradition and modernity representing a journeyof identity in the making. As opposed to the normalanthropological and authored form of “writing culture”, theethnography presented here articulates both centred anddecentring voices of authority juxtaposed in differentiatedways in the evolving Sabah society of the Malaysiannation-state.
