Journeys with Jean…

“I walked one morning with a friend and prayed the day would never end…”

--from the song “Long Road to Freedom,” by The Medical Mission Sisters

It’s almost Springtime! It’s amazing how the robins have already started reap-

pearing, and there are even a few tiny green tips of crocus showing in the gar-

den. It seems that Spring has more hope and confidence that winter will end

than we humans sometimes do!

Springtime, for us Jesus-followers, also means the beginning of the season of

Lent (40 days—not counting Sundays—leading up to Easter). Traditionally, we

have been encouraged to “give something up” for Lent as a way of reminding ourselves of the suffer-

ing and sacrifice of Jesus.

This year at Christ UMC, we are turning that negative aspect of sacrifice into a positive approach to

changing habits and behaviors that prevent us from being healthy. I can’t even begin to tell you all of

my bad, unhealthy habits! First, there’s my addiction to sugar. Second, there’s my total lack of exer-

cise. Third, there’s my addiction to sugar…. You get the picture.

So I’m going to take the advice I so often give to others: Ask for help. I’m looking for walking bud-

dies—anyone who walks regularly that I could join occasionally. Anyone who wants to spend time talk-

ing and is willing to do it outdoors while walking. Anyone who is simply willing to walk with me as we

get to know each other better. Just email or call me, and we’ll get it set up! We can support one an-

other in becoming more healthy, get outdoors to enjoy the coming Spring, and become closer friends

as we walk and talk together.

Please help me out here! I’m looking forward to expanding my friendships while un-expanding my

waistline. J

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Jean

Pat’s Ponderings

Just two months into the year and so many of us are having a hard time keeping up with our plans to be healthier and happi-er. I know I have a hard time keeping on track! So we started looking around and found those who wanted to succeed at shoring up their life often did best if they incorporated faith, food, friends and fitness as part of their focus. The Daniel Plan does just this; it incorporates all parts of our life, though I like to add family, because this program is for everybody.

Through Lent, we will be using the Daniel Plan as a template for getting healthy as a congregation. In addition to our ser-mons on Sunday, we will be exploring ways to incorporate healthy living into all parts of our life as we walk through Lent.

You are invited to commit to being healthier through participation in a small group, reading the book or just making small changes and tracking them at home. Any way you do it, Christ UMC will be able to help support your efforts. Best wishes for a healthier you!

Pastor Pat

Join the Movement! FAITH + FOOD + FITNESS + FOCUS + FRIENDS = The Daniel Plan:

40 Days to a Healthier Life

During Lent, you are invited to transform your spiritual, physical, and emotional health. The Daniel Plan is a faith-based health and wellness ministry, centered on the teachings of the Bible.

Join us for a 6-week series starting Thursday, March 13th from 6-7:30 p.m.* The Daniel Plan’s approach to achieving a healthy lifestyle is authored by Pastor Rick Warren, and is centered on five essentials: faith, food, fitness, focus, and friends. We will meet weekly to support, share, care and learn about how to be faith-filled, joyful, strong, fit, healthy, and nurtured.

This is an opportunity to invest in yourself—loose a few pounds, improve your health, increase your energy, sleep better and possibly reduce your need for medication. While this program is for all ages and lifestyles and can easily be implemented with your entire family, the class is recommend-ed for teens and adults.

Why not join in for a personal journey of health and wellness where we will come together, learn together, grow together, be better together, and pray together. This series is free, but you need to buy the book and study guide. (It is available hard copy and electronically.)

To sign up or if you have questions, either indicate your interest on your pink attendance card or contact Kim Lewis at 801-726-9579 or [email protected].

*Additional classes may form at different days/times depending on interest.

Adult Education Opportunities

Come join any of these groups:

Sunday Mornings:

Life & Times – Lively discussions and lectures about powerful contemporary issues. Current Study:

“Comparative Religion” offers you an opportunity to gain a solid grasp of the key ideas of religion it-self—the issues that repeatedly surface when you look at any faith's beliefs, practices, and organization.

Using five major religions—Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism—as illustrations of how religions can address the same core issues in parallel and different ways, award-winning Professor

Charles Kimball of the University of Oklahoma leads you on an exploration of religion's complex and mul-

tidimensional nature. Room 101 @ 9:00 am.

Wesleyan Group – is currently studying "When Jesus Came to Harvard-- Making Moral Choices To-

day". The author, Harvey Cox, is professor of theology at Harvard Divinity School. Over the 15 years

that Cox taught his Harvard undergraduate class, "Jesus and the Moral Life" the course grew so popular that the lectures had to be taught in a theatre usually reserved for rock concerts. The overwhelming

response was a clear signal of the hunger for guidance in today's confusing world, where moral guide-lines seem to shift daily. How can we ask "What would Jesus do?" when Jesus never had to cope with an

unintended pregnancy, or confront a teenager about drug use, or decide whether to put an ailing parent

in a retirement home? Cox brings the moral wisdom of Rabbi Jesus into the 21st century by way of the questions and argu-

ments and doubts of centuries of rabbinic and Christian theology as well as the voices of thousands of Harvard students who attended his course over the years. Cox shows how we can extrapolate from Je-

sus parables and bridge the gap between the ancient and modern worlds. All are welcome to join with your fellow congregants in the Parlor @ 9:00 a.m.

Bible Exploration – The Way: Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus – Travel with Adam Hamilton as he

retraces the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Once again, Hamilton approaches his subject matter with thoughtfulness and wisdom. Using historical information, archaeological data, and stories of the faith,

Hamilton follows in the footsteps of Jesus from his baptism to the temptations to the heart of his minis-try, including the people he loved, the parables he taught, the enemies he made, and the healing he

brought. Room 207 @ 10:30 am.

Other Opportunities:

Bagel Boys – Early morning study of journeys in faith – currently studying The 50 Commands of Christ. Wednesday mornings in the Parlor @ 7:30 am.

Wednesday Morning Group – Beginning March 5th we will be studying “24 Hours That Changed the World”. No single event in human history has received more attention than the suffering and crucifixion

of Jesus of Nazareth. In this Lenten journey, Adam Hamilton guides us through the last twenty-four hours of Jesus' life. Each chapter is designed to help the reader experience and understand the signifi-

cance of Jesus' suffering and death in a way you have never done before. Whether readers are long-time

Christians or simply curious about the story of Christ's crucifixion, they are invited to join the author in retracing the last 24 hours of Jesus' life. Wednesday mornings in the Parlor @ 9:30 am.

Spirits & Spirituality – A monthly Sunday evening gathering for men with varied topics and good fun.

Yoga – For all. Helps reduce stress and ease your spirit. Thursdays in Room 101 @ 4:30 pm.

Thanks again!

To our wonderful donors and friends: We are grateful for the gifts of food, clothing, household goods, diapers, baby food, and money that we receive all year long. During the holidays, we receive gifts that help keep us going well into the new year. Crossroads only exists because of the generosity of hundreds of individuals, businesses, faith communities, and other groups that support our work. Our work is sustained by private donors. We receive very little government funding.

Crossroads Urban Center has been working with impoverished Utahns for 48 years. We provide emergency groceries, clothing, children's shoes, prescription and transportation assistance, baby food and diapers, holiday food boxes, and many other resources for people in need. We also advocate for policies that help lift people out of poverty. Thanks again for including us in your charitable giving! Your donations make an immediate difference in the lives of the people we serve.
