Group Study Exchange coming to Trinidad and Tobago By Bob Clendenin

Our Rotary District 6960 is now accepting Team Leader and Team Member applications for the Group Study Ex-change departing to Trinidad next year on March 9. Interviews are

to be in late October. Please consider who would be a good can-didate to represent district 6960. Team mem-bers should be between the ages of 25 and 40 years old. They must be able to travel for four weeks beginning March 9, returning April 7, 2013. It will be the trip of a lifetime. If you as a Rotarian would like to be a Team Leader, applications are available. District 7030 is multinational. The District covers fourteen Countries with 69 Clubs meet-ing in 19 different territories, starting in South America with French Guiana, Suriname and Guyana. It extends north, encompassing the old British and French West Indies. The GSE Team from District 6960 will visit Trinidad & Tobago, completing the ex-change at the District Conference in Grenada. District 7030 will visits Southwest Florida from April 19 to May 20, finishing at our dis-trict conference. If you cannot be a Rotarian Team Leader, consider being a host for one of the incoming Team Members, an experience you will never forget.

2012-2013 is looking to be a much better year for Club President Carl. He is pictured above at a re-cent meeting, while the picture below was taken in September, 2004, shortly after the club moved to the Cultural Center following Hurricane Charley.

Invocation May each of us assembled here today enjoy the many offerings of Rotary.

May we abide by the rules we have established - those of trust, fellowship and ethics.

May we place Service above Self, in our daily endeavors.

May we always test ourselves and our efforts to be sure they are the truth, good for all concerned, of benefit to man-kind, and provide peace and under-standing.

Amen

Club Breakfast Calendar

Comedy Club and Emergency Awareness By Guest Editor Bob Wilson

Another Rotary Meet-ing, but not just another meeting, as if you were there. It was a special meeting as all Rotary meet-ings are. Our resident Pastor, Bob McDuffie gave a rousing invocation and set

the stage for our pledge and opening song… Everyone is glad that Don Roll is back as mas-ter song leader. Long may he live!

Our guest for the second week was Mark Payne. Your Guest Edi-tor did his best to convince Mr. Payne that his life would be much lesser if he did not become a Rotarian. As with our tradi-tion, we had many birth-days and anniversa-ries. The racket was filled

with happy dollars; many also for 9/11. We were reminded of our Visani Comedy Club outing, our Charity Quiz C h a l l e n g e and of our u p c o m i n g Golf Tourna-ment on Oc-tober 20th. Mike Colgan turned in some more checks to Joe Rezek, but we still need more sponsors for this event.

O u r o w n Wayne Salladé was our non-Guest speaker. Your Guest Editor has mentioned many times that the best speakers are clas-sification talks by our members and today was no ex-

ception. Wayne took us back to 9/11, minute-by-minute as he went through how he reacted to this tragic event. How he used his authority to order lock-downs and took the needed events to insure our safety and the safety of our commu-nity, even though no buildings were attacked in Charlotte County. We became more aware of exactly what Wayne has to do in the event of an emergency and how his office and department reacts to these challenges. I’m sure we all feel safer knowing that we have Wayne on the job.

THE

FOUR-WAY TEST

Of things we

think, say or do First, Is it the TRUTH?

Second, Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Third, Will it build GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Fourth, Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Polio Progress Mary Stitt is an 87-year-old retired elementary school principal, mother of five, grandmother of eleven and great-grandmother of six.

The Arlington Heights resi-dent also is part of a world-wide effort by Rotary Interna-

tional to eradicate polio. Stitt has traveled to India, Niger and Nigeria a total of six times since 2004 to inoculate children with polio vaccine. When she walks down the streets of Nigeria, she says, she is easily recognizable because there are not too many elderly white women.

"They call me Grandma Mary," said Stitt, a Ro-tarian for 20 years who has stayed active follow-ing cardiac stent surgery in 2009. "The last time I was in Nigeria in the fall of 2010, we were out in the neighborhoods, and a woman said to me, 'I know you.'

Stitt is one of more than a million Rotarians who have donated their time and money to a pro-gram called PolioPlus, which started in 1988 with the goal of eradicating polio, a highly infec-tious and crippling disease. To date, Rotary has raised more $1.2 billion for an effort that has reached more that 2 billion children in 122 coun-tries.

The results of the efforts by Rotary and other organizations battling polio are staggering. In 1988, 125 countries were polio-endemic and more than 350,000 children paralyzed each year. In 2011, there were 650 cases globally in 16 countries, according to the World Health Or-ganization. This year, as of last week, there have been 128 cases in four countries.

Three of those countries, Pakistan, Nigeria and Afghanistan, have never been polio-free. They have accounted for 123 of this year's cases (the others have been in Chad). The disease contin-ues to present a significant challenge, not only to the health of people living there but also to those from other countries who come in contract through travel. Officials battling polio fear that a rebound in overall cases could harm eradication efforts.

In August, 50 Rotary leaders from the U.S. and nine other nations met at the organization's headquarters in Evanston to strategize for a United Nations General Assembly meeting Sept. 27 at which U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is expected to issue a strong call to action in support of polio eradication.

Sherry smiles as Joe Rezek puts a dollar in the basket for a recent photo of himself in the paper. Act-ing Sergeant at Arms Darryl seems to be enjoying his temporary role, but we are sure he is looking for-ward to the return of Sergeant Don Helt.
