ARIZONA MASONRYOne Day Grand Masters ClassThe Grand Lodge of Arizona is sponsoring a One Day Class hosted by Hunters Paradise Lodge No. 85 on March 31, 2018, at the El Zaribah Shrine, 552 N. 40th Street, Phoenix, AZ. The degrees will be conferred by the El Zaribah First Degree Team, the Scottish Rite Second Degree Team, and the York Rite Third Degree Team. The consideration for this one day class is to aid Lodges in cleaning up their FAILED TO ADVANCE candidates, any backlog of CANDIDATES IN PROCESS, and any NEW PETIONERS which the Lodge might want to send to a one day class. It shall be the Individual Lodge’s decision on whether to allow its candidates to participate.I encourage you to examine your own records for 2015 and 2016, and even from years prior to 2015, to find brothers that have failed to advance. I ask that you make a concerted effort to review your Failed to Advance records and contact these brothers, offering them this option to complete their degrees. Be advised that all candidates that have FAILED TO ADVANCE for a period of 2 years must comply with Section 7-204 of the Revised Arizona Masonic Statutes prior to attendance at this one day class. In addition, any candidates currently in the process of petitioning, or awaiting election, or awaiting the degrees due to a Lodge back log are also welcome to attend this class.A list of your proposed candidates must be received in the Grand Secretary’s Office no later than January 18, 2018. If your Lodge is not interested in participating, please also notify the Grand Secretary’s Office, so there is a record of your response.

Fraternally,

Scott A. ThomasGrand Master2017-2018

MASONIC EDUCATIONMOZART, THE MAGIC FLUTE, AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESSA Masonic Interpretation of the Libretto Of Mozart’s Last OperaPresented by Bro. Carlos Rausch December 29, 2008 to Arizona Research Lodge No. 1This study is based not solely on book references but by the hidden Masonic Symbolism of the text of the opera in question. Research is a challenging activity but researching the subject of this paper offers not only a vast variety of opinions of different authors but contradictions as well. The Magic Flute was commissioned by Emanuel Schikaneder in 1791. Schikaneder was an itinerant musician/actor/impresario. He was a member of a Masonic Lodge in the city of Regensburg, Germany and later was suspended or expelled from the lodge. The reason for that attitude is not well documented. Mozart was apparently short on money and accepted the commission. He also was well connected with the Austrian aristocracy and the Royal Palace, accepting commissions to write music for them. I shall start by quoting a few commentaries or criticisms of the work to clarify the reasons for so much controversy.Edward Dent, Mozart’s Operas, p.218: “The Libretto of Die Zauberflote(The Magic Flute) has generally been considered to be one of the most absurd specimens of that form of literature in which absurdity is regarded as a matter of course. What Schikaneder wanted was a fairy tale plot of the conventional kind, a good fairy, a wicked magician, a pair of lovers passing through various trials and ultimately united, thanks to the virtues of a musical instrument-endowed with magic properties.” Needless to say, the magic instrument is – in our case – a magic flute.

MASONIC EDUCATIONMOZART, THE MAGIC FLUTE, AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESSNear the end of the opera we find out that there are two pairs of lovers. One couple is of a spiritual nature while the other is materialistic and self-serving.One does not have to feel disappointed by the criticism of the author just mentioned. There are other sources with positive and even inspirational commentaries. In “Mozart’s Famous Operas” (not mentioned in E. Dent’s book) we read “…however, the peculiar magic of Mozart’s last opera The Magic Flute will begin to work slowly and unendingly at each hearing in a miraculous and inexplicable way not encountered in any other of Mozart’s operas …”I must say that the success of this particular opera is due only to the music and not to the plot. The music holds an impeccable unity of style throughout. With the exception of a few brass fanfares calling the priests or announcing the entrance of the High Priest Sarastro, as well as the opening of the overture (all this attributed to the 3 knocks at the doors by somespeculators), the music is strictly operatic 18th century Central-European Rococo style. There are in the music beautiful melodies, excellently planned harmonic structures, a few Italian style recitatives and of course a grandiose “fin de fete” to close the opera. With the exception I previously mentioned about the “3 knocks’, there are no indications of Masonic ‘language” inthe music. Music does not create images of any kind (literary, philosophical, or visual); it only creates sound images unless the auditor relates these sounds to his or her memories or imagination. Music is music. The hidden Masonic “message” is in the text. One must read the libretto in order to understand the Masonic symbolism. The firs performance took place on September 30, 1791 at the Theatre “… an der Wieden” in the city of Vienna, Austria. Composer: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Libretisit: Emanuel Schikaneder (acceted by some as the sole author.) It is believed by several connoisseurs that Schikaneder wrote only a few lyrics and the rest of the text was completed by Carl Ludwig Giesecke, also Ignaz von Born, a former Jesuit Priest turned later into a scholar of National Sciences. There are more candidates for the authorship but there is not evidence so far. Iam relying on the Schirmer’s publication of the vocal score (Voice and Piano version).

THE MAGIC FLUTE, ACT 1The first act has no apparent Masonic significance until the last scene where Sarastro suddenly is transformed from a wicked

magician into the wise High Priest of the Temple. The chorus calls Sarastro for guidance for perfection and inspiration. A slight atmosphere of morality (a Masonic call?) is felt on stage. It is obvious that the main subject at this point in time insinuates a love scene. Pamina is longing for Tamino. Will love take over the plot or will it substitute for something else? Or will the bodily separation of the lovers be part of the trials?

MASONIC EDUCATIONMOZART, THE MAGIC FLUTE, AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESSThe chorus sings: “May long live Sarastro, his wisdom prevailing. He praises and chastens in justice unfailing”.Sarastro sings: “To enter in our temple doors these strangers may not be denied. So place veils upon their heads, they must at first be purified”. Sarastro is probably referring to Tamino and Pamina. But what is Pamina doing at the portals of the Temple? Will she also be initiated? The Temple of the Wisdom is –on stage- the Temple of Isis and Osiris and we know that the particular cult admitted women as part of the preparation for the priesthood. The chorus sings again “Let virtue andintegrity throughout our life the mentors be. Then are doomed evil, sin, and vice and Earth becomes a paradise”. It is obvious that the first act ends in an allegory of mortality.

ACT 2

The last scene of the first act serves as a bridge to the second one. Act 2 opens with the March of the Priests(sort of circumambulation) in the style of an ancient stately pavane. After a Fanfare –again the 3 knocks- there is a short dialogue between the High Priest Sarastro and 3 priests who introduce the Prince Tamino and his beloved Pamina to be admitted into the Temple of Isis and Osiris.Sarastro speaks: “Consecrated servants of the great Gods Osiris and Isis in the Temple of Wisdom, with pure heart I declare that today’s assembly is one of the most important days of our time. Tamino, a Prince, waits at the northern portal of our temple, longing with a virtual soul for the enlightenment towards which all of us have been striving with energy and zeal. To watch over this high minded youth, and to extend to him the ands of friendship, will be oneof the foremost duties this day.” (What follows is familiar to Masons)

Later on Sarastro sings an Aria with a Masonic allegory: “Within these holy portals, revenge remains unknown, and all erringmortals, their way by love is shown, and guided forth by friendship’s hand they journey to a better land. Within this holy dwelling, in brotherly love one lives. Of hatred is no telling for man his foe forgives. Then doomed are evil, sin, and vice and Earth becomes a paradise.”(A clear expression of the ultimate conquest of light over darkness). Both lovers are allowed to break their promise of silence and they enter the temple. Tamino plays his flute and both embrace and sing together: “No force on earth our lives shall rend, even though death may be our end. The fire’s flames we have transcended, the danger we have firm withstood.”The chorus sings: “Hail to thee, Osiris! You guided their ways. Praise, praise to thee. O Osiris! Thanks to Isis we raise. Thus courage has triumphed, and virtue will raise. The laurels of wisdom receiving as price.”The opera continues with songs of praise to Isis and Osiris and the triumph of light over darkness. The Magic Flute is a hymndedicated to love, the greatest human power. Undertones of Masonic philosophy are placed with wisdom, subtlety and good tastes.

MASONIC TRIVIAOn October 12, 1890 the President of the United States, William Howard Taft passed through the Arizona Territory. Grand Master Fletcher Doan of Gila Valley No. 9 F & AM Masonic Lodgehad the pleasure of presenting to him an invitation from W. Brother A.A. Johns of Aztlan Lodge #1requesting his presence at a special meeting of that Lodge at their hall in the Masonic Temple in Prescott. This he graciously accepted although it was an infringement upon his program. Grand Master Doan attended the reception with him, hosted by Aztlan Lodge, on which occasion the register of Aztlan Lodge shows the registration of William Howard Taft, of Kilwinning Lodge No. 356 of Cincinnati, Ohio

The original minute for St. Andrews Royal Arch Lodge [Chapter] meeting in Boston on August 28, 1769, when William Davis - a British soldier -was made a Knight Templar. This is the earliest minute on record of the Order of the Temple being conducted. The Presiding Officer (a past master of Glittering Star Lodge No. 322), James Brown, was stationed in Boston as part if an Irish regiment sent over w the British military. Of interest, the second Knight Templar on record was made in the same Lodge in November - that would be none other than Bro. Paul Revere.St. Andrews Royal Arch Lodge is the first Chapter in record operating in the US - although there is evidence of a Royal Arch Mason being exalted in 1758 in Fredericksburg Lodge, VA - the home Lodge of George Washington.

MASONIC TRIVIAThe Grand Lodges of Indian Territory and Oklahoma were united into one Grand Body under the name and style of "The Grand Lodge A.F. & A.M. of the State of Oklahoma" in a convention held at Guthrie on the 10th day of February, 1909. On February 9th, the Grand Lodge of Oklahoma held it's regular Annual communication and wound up its affairs. The Grand Lodge of Indian Territory met in Grand Communication on the same day at the Temple, at McAlester, in a meeting called especially for the purpose of closing up all of its affairs, which was done in peace in harmony. That night, after finishing up its business, the members of the Grand Lodge of Indian Territory were taken in a special train of two long sections to Guthrie to attend the convention, arriving there early in the morning of the 10th.

The Grand Lodge of Oklahoma met this train at the depot, in Guthrie, and the two Grand Bodies marched in double file, in a column more than three blocks long, to the big Temple, and all the brethren registered in the new Grand Tilers’srecord, made especially for the purpose.

At two o'clock Grand Master of Hoag, of Oklahoma, opened the convention with an excellent address, in which he introduced MW Leo. E Bennett, (Who was Grand Master of Indian Territory) as the presiding officer of the convention

MASONIC TRIVIAIn 1852, charges of unmasonic conduct were brought against a member of Monroe Lodge No. 12 (Now Monroe Lodge No. 77) in Union, WVA for compromising the virtue of the sister of another mason. After a trial, the defendant was found innocent, much to the chagrin of the accusers. Complaints were made by the accusers to the Grand Lodge in Richmond (As it was then under thejurisdiction of Grand Lodge of Virginia A.F. & A.M.). A new trial was ordered, but a majority of the membership felt that a fair trial had already been given and declined to retry the case. The Grand Lodge brought pressure to bear and a new trial was given, with the same results. Lawsuits were threatened and discord prevailed. At least eight members quit the lodge because of this.In August 1855, a committee from the Grand Lodge visited Monroe No. 12 "to settle the difficulties existing in this lodge. After mutual explanations all and every complaint was honorably and amicably settled and adjusted, and the members of the lodge together with six of the brethren who had quit…, joined hands around the altar, in brotherly fellowship and fraternal feeling with the desire and determination to let the past be forgotten and buried in oblivion, andthat for the future they will live together as men and masons." At the next meeting the above named brothers were re-admitted to the lodgeThe lodge unanimously agreed to destroy all records and papers pertaining to the case, (but they still exist.)

MASONIC TRIVIAThe Grand Lodge of West Virginia was organized May 1865. In 1868, a compromise was worked out between the Grand Lodges of Virginia and West Virginia. In exchange for recognizing the Grand Lodge of West Virginia, those few lodges within the borders of West Virginia who wished to stay under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Virginia were allowed to do so. At this time Monroe Lodge No. 12 was reported by the Grand Secretary as supposed inactive since 1861 because it had sent no reports to the Grand Lodge of Virginia. However, the lodge actually remained open during the entire war. It was difficult or impossible to communicate with the Grand Lodge in Richmond during the war years. The same report was given in 1866In November 1871, at Monroe Lodge No. 12 "A motion was then made and seconded, that the sense of this lodge be taken whether it would continue to adhere to the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Virginia or unite with the Grand Lodge of West Virginia. The vote being taken by ballot resulted unanimously in favor of remaining under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Virginia.“ By 1876, only three lodges remained in West Virginia still maintaining allegiance to the Grand Lodge of Virginia; Indian Creek, Monroe, and Greenbrier. In that year, Indian Creek and Greenbrier Lodges changed allegiance to the grand jurisdiction of West Virginia. This left Monroe Lodge No. 12 the only Virginia lodge within the borders of West Virginia.

When I was a school boy I was compelled to write compositions from a subject given me. Unfortunately, perhaps, I have never since learned to write or speak without a subject. I have therefore chosen for my subject this evening a verse from the scripture. It is the twenty-fifth verse of the ninth chapter of First Corinthians: ‘And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things.’:In using this language, St. Paul seemed to have reference to the athletic contests of the Olympian games to illustrate and enforce the conditions of successful life not only of theChristian, but the layman. But the Brother of the lodge when he hears St. Paul talk of becoming masters, the language of the lodge suggests master masons and he understands St. Paul to be telling how men must live to be masters in Masonry. Noticethe perfect agreement of the ancient charge with the apostle’s doctrine.‘First stands the foundation principle that without merit there is no true honor; that amongst Masons there is perfect equity of rights, and all preferments are based upon real wonth of character and personal merit only. In Masonry as out of it,

‘Worth makes the ma, the want of it the fellow; The rest is all but leather and prunello honor and shame from no conditions rise. Act well your part – there all the honor lies’

TALES OF ARIZONA MASONRY 1882-2016Governor of Arizona Myron H McCord’s address at the 1895 Annual Communication“St. Paul said in this Masonic and laconic text’ ‘Every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things.’ He did not sue the word temperate, in a narrow sense, but in a broad one, meaning that the whole of man and the whole of life are brought into subjection to the law of wisdom and right being and right doing. This ancient change, agreeable to apostle’s text, defines Masonry to be the ‘science of right and living.’ What is Masonry? Answers may differ, but I give you an answer to be considered and. I hope, never forgotten: Freemasonry is not a lodge, nor a promise, nor a card, nor a grip, nor a secret; Freemasonry is the science of Human life. Life is the mostsacred thing entrusted to the care and keeping of man, and to the thoughtful man all life, vegetable life and animal life in thehigher degree, is sacred. How to perfect that life and make the most out of it is the object, the study of Freemasons. My brethren, instead of entertaining you on this occasion with interesting traditions of St. John. I would evince my love foryou and the order by discussing how we may show ourselves worthy of the ancient and honorable name we bear, and the order we represent. What are the essential qualifications of Masonry? I answer: First, an essential qualification an requirement of a Mason is intelligence. Said Thomas Jefferson: ‘If you are not a thinking man, to what purpose are you a man at all?’ The foundation of the miser, discontent and crime of the world is ignorance. In the science of the human life is a cruse, and the chief study of mankind is man, not how to make money, but how to make men. Masons may have begun in building a temple for Solomon, but its work is now in building Solomon's for the temple. What is a Masonic Lodge? What is its dimensions? It may be a cave, a chamber or a hall, of small or large dimensions; symbolically a lodge represents the universe, and conveys the idea of immeasurable space and of the universality of Freemasonry. Our east represents sunrise, our west is sunset, our south is all between from the center to the circumference and from the earth to the heavens. Brethren, here is work for the lodge. Ask a brother to come to the lodge meetings, he ask:

TALES OF ARIZONA MASONRY 1882-2016Governor of Arizona Myron H McCord’s address at the 1895 Annual Communication‘Is there any work on hand?’. If no, then he will not be there, but we use the work in a technical sense – work on others. There is the work of skillful master to see that, there is always work on the trestle board. Shame on a lodge of Freemasons that is ever our of work. Brethren, we are builders of character and it is our duty to instruct one and another. The Masonic Lodge is indeed a universality in which the whole science of human life is properly taught. It is a school for every nation and people under the sun. Here men may learn to subdue their passions, circumscribe their desire and improve their mind. Here are enforced the four cardinal virtues – which conduce to length of days, true happiness hereafter. In Masonic parlance wisdom is to be found in the east, but it is not to be kept there. As the sun spreads light over the earth, so the east is to spread wisdom over this lodge, dispersing it to every member. Another Masonic virtue, which every Mason owes to himself, is industry. Man’s very constitution, all his physical and mental makeup shows him formed for a life of activity. Industry is the normal state of a manly man. Experience and observations alike show that idleness is a curse and industry is a blessing. The edict of a toil announced to man in the Garden of Eden was a blessing, and wasintended to be such. In the eyes of a good man the infidel, because he that provided not for his own had denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. The man who is a speculative Christian and a practical infidel. The difference in the attainments, achievements, and circumstances of men is generally the measure of the difference of their industry. Farmers, miners, lawyers, preachers, physicians, merchants, and suitors for the hands and hearts of women fall by indolence where others succeed by industry.

TALES OF ARIZONA MASONRY 1882-2016Governor of Arizona Myron H McCord’s address at the 1895 Annual CommunicationIt is no more genteel or manly than it is profitable to be idle.Industry is honorable and noble. It is cruelty to children to raise them to be do-nothings. Masonry is a school of industry. Itssymbols are working tools, its ceremonies relate to industrial pursuits, its admonitions relate to honest dealings for honestwork, it ancient charge specify that none shall discover envy at the prosperity of a brother, nor supplant him or put him ourof his life, if he be capable to finish this same, for no man can finish another man’s work, so much to the Lod’s profit unlesshe be thoroughly acquainted with the design and draughts of him that began it.But self-mastery is the Masonic word which represents the constellation of virtues that distinguish the true Mason as a man among men. Intelligence related to min, industry to economics. Self-mastery is moral. An idle mind is the devil’s workshop, a lazy man is the devil’s clotheshorse, but a deceitful, slanderous, hypocrite is the devil himself turned loose in society. The bull loose in a China shop may be a coarse figure, but may duly suggest the libertine loose in society where chinaware is human and the material broken is human hearts, lives and hopes. Equal social purity for man as for woman is the teaching of Masonry, and one of its most worthy precepts. I would suggest to the brethren the propriety of considering the ancient charge which says: ‘You may enjoy yourselves with innocent mirth, treating one another according to ability, but avoiding all excess or forcing a brother to eat and drink beyond his inclination, or hindering him from going where his occasions may call him, or doing anything offensive. This applies to a Mason as related to himself. That is what a Mason should do and be if he went alone in the world. But we are not alone and therefore we should speak of those marks and virtues of Masonry which related to others outside of the lodge of society in general. Within the lodge the three great Masonic tenets are brother love, relief, and truth. Masonic honors grow from there. Without the order, I would say that the duties of Masonry are comprehended in tow things- charity towards the needy, and public sprit for the public good. Man is related to his fellows as the links of the chain are related to each other.

TALES OF ARIZONA MASONRY 1882-2016Governor of Arizona Myron H McCord’s address at the 1895 Annual CommunicationThe charity of a Mason is that of a good Samaritan. Public spirit includes courtesy. Be courteous. Sympathy with humanity and the practice of the golden rule in civil and business life.I have now spoken of the Mason as to himself and his relations to his fellow beings, but we have not yet completed our study. The Masonic emblem of the all-seeing eye reminds us of our relation to Almighty God. Our ancient charge teaches us that a Mason is obliged by his obligation to obey the moral law; and if he rightly understands the art, he will never be a stupid atheist nor an irreligious libertine. Hence in the eye of Masonry to use profane language is neither brave, polite or wise, but it is an wicked as it is foolish. (To keep the Sabbath day is to remember God. To live for eternity is wise for a man who is soon to be done with time, to be a Mason is to be a good man). There is no truth brought out in any degree beyond the master Masons degree that is not embodied in that degree or in the two that precede it. Every phase of morality, every teaching of virtue and uprightness of the order are contained with the blue Lodge degrees. Masonry as here taught is the science of right living towards one’s self, his fellow men and his God”

GILA VALLEY LODGE NO. 9 AND OCOTILLO NO. 21 WEEKLY NEWSPAPER

Brethren, Friends, and Family,This year the Masonic Charities of Arizona approved 18 grants totaling $30,000 to organizations throughout Arizona. These 501c3 charitable organizations provide much needed services to their communities. Those services include assistance to our Veterans at the three VA Hospitals in Arizona, Domestic abuse shelters, child learning disabilities, training and assistance forpeople with special needs, support for soldiers abroad, Adult literacy programs and Personal hygiene kits for the working poor and homeless. We are able to award these Grants from the income of our investment fund, Lodge and Personal donations and support from Grand Lodge. In order to keep up with the desire to expand our Grant distribution to more organizations and communities around the State we ask for your help. We have registered with the Amazon Smile Foundation. Amazon Smile will donate 0.5% of the purchase price of eligible products to the charitable organization selected by their customers. For Amazon customers to select the Masonic Charities of Arizona to receive these donations go to http://smile.amazon.com/ch/94-2746389 to automatically select us. Or you can go to www.smile.amazon.com and you will be prompted to select a charity. Now you are ready to shop and support the Masonic Charities of Arizona. The Board of Directors of the Masonic Charities of Arizona extends our appreciation to all of you for your support.
