MOTHER’S DAY BEGINNING

Miss Anna Jarvis The following article was found in The Oregon Daily Journal (Portland, Oregon) 8 May 1910, Sun. P. 68.

All that is good in man or woman responds to the appeal, "Live this day as your mother would have you live." Miss Anna Jarvis, of Philadelphia, was the woman who conceived the idea of Mother’s Day, in memory of her own mother. She made an appeal to several public officials to call attention to her plan for reverencing mothers. In addition to taking the observance of Mothers' Day into foreign lands. other Christian institutions have been in-strumental in introducing it into bodies of men in our own country. The Naval Y. M. C. A. took up the custom unanimously, and the fact that a large percentage of the men will be decorated with the white carnations. which are the symbols of Mothers' Day, will interest the whole body in the

commemoration of their mothers.

MOTHERS' DAY OBJECT. The general idea of Mothers' Day is a simultaneous observance in every part of the world of the lore and reverence men, women and children owe to a good mother. The special object is to honor and uplift motherhood and to give comfort and happiness to "the best mother who ever lived"—YOUR MOTHER. A day to honor mothers 'may be worldwide in celebration, be-cause every class. race, creed and nation, in some way, reverences a noble mother. "Mother" is the shrine to which all mother-loving hearts will pil-grimage. Mothers' Day is "the Sabbath" of every creed and chase. It is for the very best and the very worst man or woman who lives. The heart that has lost its song, or to which the laughter of the world is like a moan, as well as the heart filled with joy, will feel the thrill and comfort of other love the day will recall. FLORAL BADGE. On Mothers' Day wear a white flower, or your mother's favorite. Give one to someone else to wear, and remember the sick or unfortunate in hospitals, homes or prisons, or someone else with whom a little, joy goes a long way. It really sets the blood to tingling in the veins of those you think have no heart, and who may think you have none. The "memory flower" affords many opportunities for a message of sympathy, brotherhood for courtesy to friend and business associate. OBSERVANCE. Loving remembrance of your mother (or her memory) through some dis-tinct act of kindness, tribute, visit or letter. TIME OF OBSERVANCE. Second Sabbath in May annually; schools on weekday

WINDOW INTO THE PAST Sandra J Stacey

What Would you find if you looked in the “WindoW into the past” in May:

Clarksville Chronicle 04 May 1860, Fri • Page 3 A very singular and beautiful night was presented on Tuesday evening, the 24th ult., of the planets Venus and the Moon, in what we suppose is called occultation. They were in close proximity to each other for some two hours, and at one time the bright star stood perched on the point of the moon's horn. It was a magnificent sight. Clarksville Chronicle 04 May 1860, Fri • Page 3 The work of excavation for the foundation of the new stores to be erected on the site of Newell's old livery stable, corner of Franklin and Second Streets, is progressing rapidly. The ground is fast assuming the features of an "evacuated lot." This block which is to embrace three stores, three sto-ries high, will, when finished, be one of the finest in the town and a decided ornament to it. Our enterprising friend, Mr. Tom. Munford, has, we learn, purchased the corner lot, and will build and own the store there. Mr. Jo. Jones owns the two others. They are to be occupied by two dry-goods stores and a drug store. Clarksville Chronicle 18 May 1860, Fri • Page 2 The Branch Bank of Tennessee, here, since the heavy robbery of their vault, some months since have bought one of Lilly's chilled-iron safes, with his patent combination lock, and have had chilled iron inside and outside doors put to their vault, both doors also having the famous combination lock, thus rendering their security against burglars perfect, This looks like locking the stable door after the horse has been stolen; but, they may have another horse, some day! Clark, easily the oldest man In Clarksville, if not in the county, returned home yesterday after a stay of three weeks in Georgia, having gone there to visit two of his sons. The Doctor bears his weight of years remarkably well. He has never known what it was to be seriously ill. He is likewise the oldest Free Mason here, and has been a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. A mission for non-Catholics, by a Paulist Father, will open at the Church of the Immacu-late Conception on Monday, May 13, and close on Sunday, May 19. Im-portant subjects have been announced for each of the seven days of the mission. Protestants will be cordially welcome, as the services are designed especially for their edification. The preaching will be done by Father Sulli-van, a man of unusual learning. Rev. J. J. Ramey, of the local Methodist ministry, left yesterday for Oxford. Ala., where he has accepted an invita-tion to deliver a series of lectures before the students of Emory College. CLARKSVILLE, Tenn., May 23. —(Special.)—Late last night a band of "regulators" riddled the house of Joe Ellis with bullets. Mr. Ellis resides In District No. 19, near Palmyra, and he and his family had retired for the night when the band aroused them. Mr. Ellis responded to their call and was told that they wanted Gar Lyle. Lyle, who had been stopping there, was not at home, and the crowd was so Informed, but they seemed to doubt Mr. Ellis' statement and commenced to shoot at the house. Hundreds of shots were fired, many of which struck the building. A lamp, the light of which could be seen through a window, was shot to pieces, but fortunately did not set fire to anything. Mr. Ellis states that there seemed to be about fifty men in the party, but he was unable to recognize any of them. He and his family were badly frightened by the attack, but were uninjured.
