Happiness is…

As many of you know I have a dog, a black and white English Springer

Spaniel to be precise. Out and about he is a typical (but not hyper)

Springer, nose to the ground scenting out whatever he can smell. Around

the house though he is the soppiest dog I have known. He just loves

attention and tummy tickles. In truth he thinks he is a lap dog even though

he is just a little on the big side for that role! Just before coming inside to

write this I was sitting in the garden enjoying a cup of tea and some very

pleasant spring sunshine when there he was up on my knee demanding

attention! His life is quite simple really: food, walks, sleep and cuddles! If

I believed in reincarnation I think I would be asking to come back as a dog

in a loving home!

Perhaps though my dog reflects some of the simplicity that we all long for.

This modern life is often fast paced and time just flies out of our hands.

Happiness it seems is wrapped up with the pursuit of wealth and status. A

better job, a nicer house, a better car and so on. And when family come

along we deflect those longings onto our children… it is for their sake we

want these things so that they can have a better life. I am not saying that

nice things are wrong just that they are ultimately not the answer to our

happiness. Just take a moment and pause for a bit. What is most important

in your life? The things you possess or the people you know? And then

ask again what gives you the most happiness? I would like to think that

again the answer is in the people around you and their company. If we

take the time to boil it down our happiest moments will be found in the

simple pleasures of life. And at the heart of those moments will be love.

We have a basic need to be loved and to give love as well. That love is not

just romantic love, it is the love of your parents, the love you have for your

children and the love of your friends. Even then though we can find

ourselves asking, “Is there more to life than this?”

The Church celebrates Pentecost this month. A celebration that marks the

pouring out of the Holy Spirit on all believers. With that gift is a flood of

love and grace. The love of the Father released through the death and

resurrection of the Son. Love, God’s love is at the heart of the Gospel

message. God loves you and longs for you to know the fullness of that

love. Love is at the heart of the Church. Covenanter Page 3

You may not associate love with the Church or any form of organised

religion. Your experience of Church may be the very opposite of that or it

may be that you simply perceive the Church to be stuffy, boring and

irrelevant. And yes the Church has not always got it right and yes we have

often portrayed the Gospel as unloving and judgemental. If you have

brushed with that Church at any time in your life and in any location I

apologise. I sincerely hope it is not the way I reflect the message of the

Good News of Jesus Christ.

It is about Jesus, his life, his death and his resurrection. I know the

question that is already forming in your mind. Really? Can a man who

lived 2000 years ago and over 2000 miles away have any relevance to life

in the 21st Century? Can Jesus really have any relevance to your life?

Their are many many people who would say yes and if you took the time

to investigate the facts and truths behind the man you may well be

pleasantly surprised yourself.

Just this week I was at the launch in Glasgow of the Alpha film series.

Filmed all around the world and interviewing people of faith and of no

faith it really does look like an exciting and relevant way to explore the

message of the Gospel. We expect to bring it to Fenwick in the Autumn so

watch this space in order to be part of the adventure. Is it time to seek the

answer to the big questions in life, “Is there more to life than this?”

In the meantime there is lot happening in and around our little but no so

sleepy rural church. Just glance through the pages of this Covenanter to

find a range of events from Kite making to Cafe Church as well as the

usual week by week and month by month happenings.

Every Blessings

Is it really?….Reflections on Hallhouse

Dates and names are not my strong point so you can imagine my surprise when I

was told we moved to Fenwick almost 12 years ago. Why is this relevant? Well, it

was in a conversation about how long we had been involved in the monthly visits

to Hallhouse.

Over the last eleven years, we have seen people come and go but still, we are

amazed at their resilience and ability to remember songs and prayers.

Simon Young, John MacMIllan and Shona Crosby have helped out in the past.

Kim Watt, whilst training, also and I think she still accompanies Geoff when he

does a more formal service each month. Myself and David Finnie take it in turns

to ‘lead’ the Sunday afternoons.

David continues to play guitar, helped out in the past by John Hunter and Alistair

Peter on keyboard, and now we are lucky to have Christine Hainey, who also

sings with us. Janice Bryson, Catherine McInnes and Florence McKellar, are our

longest serving members. Over the last few years Mary Tedford, Jean Craig,

Marlyn Morton and Mary McDonald have joined our merry band. At Christmas,

other members of the congregation have joined us to swell our numbers as have,

on one occasion, members of AChoired Taste. Quite a history when I sit down to

think about it. Everyone is welcome to come and join us, even if just a ‘one off’.

Thanks to Mary McDonald, we now have our very own Hallhouse keyboard

which has made a huge difference to being able to share the musical styles with

the residents. Sometimes only the keyboard can do justice to some of the older

hymns: no offence David!!

Eleven Years later, we continue to go to Hallhouse on the first Sundays of

February, March, April, May and June. We take July and August off and then

return on the first Sundays of September, October and November with an extra

Carol Favourites, usually lasting an hour, on the last Sunday of November, as

Hallhouse is so busy over the Christmas and New Year Period.

What is amazing is how the residents and staff enjoy our visits. It is a very

rewarding 30 minutes once a month and without those mentioned above could not

have continued for so many years. A very personal ‘Thank you’ to them and

further thanks to all those who continue to pop in and out and whom I haven’t

mentioned. I would love to be writing another wee update in years to come.

If you haven’t come along and find yourselves with a spare half hour, please do

come and enjoy a little time of faith in the community. Staff tell us that our visits

spark conversations which can continue during the week and how much everyone

look forward to our visits.

Moscow SWI

The joint Moscow/Fenwick curling team, comprising of Catherine

McInnes, Margaret Dykes, Donna Elliot and Ann Campbell, were runners

up in the low road of the SWI National Competition at Hamilton on 21st

March.

The “Moscow Molls” team won the Ayrshire Federation quiz, which was

held at Troon on 15th April. After successfully coping with the new

format, the team of Anne Craig, Margaret Donaldson, Christine Taylor and

Rosie Penson were successful in the tiebreaker.

The next meeting at the Hogg Hall, Galston, will be the AGM on Monday

2nd May, which includes a bring and buy sale. There will be a soft toy

competition for the Jessie MacKinnon.

THE FETE NEEDS YOU!!!!

It’s time for us to start to organise

this year’s Fete, which will be on

the first Friday in June (3rd). The

organising committee is looking

for as much help as possible – we

need ideas for games for children

and adults, we need helpers to set

up and man the stalls, and we

need help to clear up afterwards.

If you can spare some time on the

night – even if it’s just an hour –

we’ll be delighted to hear from

you. If you have any bright ideas

for stalls or games, or if you

would like to run a stall of your

own – please let us know.

We will be meeting most

Wednesday evenings from now

on, and would welcome your

input.

Please contact Irene Couper for

more details (01560600520).
