W ith Valentine’s Day just a few days

away, I think it appropriate to share

some of what I’ve learned, through tri-

al and error, about this important day. Let’s call

this a “warning shot over the bow” of those unsuspecting men

who would otherwise run afoul of their sweetheart this February

14th. Inasmuch as this is written

for men, I ask that our lady read-

ers not continue past these open-

ing remarks. (We’re on the honor

system, you know.)

I am writing this from the point of view of a long time married man, however, similar results may be had with this current, younger genera-tion, too. Here are some important rules to follow: (1) DO NOT buy your wife or girlfriend a bar-b-que grill, vacuum, coffee pot or a piece of furniture. Women like shinny things with a lot of bling! (2) Don’t dare wait until the afternoon of the last day to purchase a gift. You may have a nervous breakdown in the store and end up buying a grill, vacuum or coffee pot by default. (3) Flowers, along with a nice card, will usually soften the blow of an ill-advised gift. Show her the flowers first. If done correctly, you can then announce the fishing trip or golf day you have planned with the guys for the following weekend. Don’t wait more than an hour to bring it up.

There’s one more rule which I am still trying to learn. If we treat our wives and loved ones with love, kindness and respect during the other 364 days, the gift we give on Valentines Day may not be nearly as im-portant as we thought. This is a special day for most women, so, if it’s important to my wife, it’s important to me .

As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medi-um.

“Women like shinny things with

a lot of bling!”

We had some favorable comments on this article and decided to run it again. If you came up short on Valentine’s Day, cut it out, put it in your sock drawer and review it next year.

Newnan’s H.E.L.P. SPAY NEUTER CLINIC To Participate in

HSUS Spay Day™

Local Citizens Urged

To Spay or Neuter Pets

The Newnan Coweta Humane Society affiliate, H.E.L.P. Spay Neuter Clinic will participate in Spay Day™, an international campaign of The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International, to promote the life-saving benefits of spay/neuter, when H.E.L.P. Spay Neuter Clinic

hosts their “Beat the Heat” spay neuter campaign at their clinic in Newnan, GA.

The event, that will be conducted during the en-tire month of February, will feature even greater discounts than their regular low prices. Female dogs $70, Male dogs $60, Female cats $50 and Male cats $40 and all surgery packages include FREE Rabies and DHPP vaccines for dogs and FVRCP vaccines for cats.

As always, there is no extra charge for in heat or pregnant cats or dogs. “Spay/neuter saves pets’ lives while lessening the burden on animal shelters and taxpayers,” said LouAnn Jones, Ex-ecutive Director. “We are inviting our citizens to sponsor the spay or neuter of at least one ani-mal—their own, a friend or family member’s, or a shelter animal awaiting adoption—in honor of Spay Day™ 2011.”

This year marks the seventeenth annual Spay Day™. Since Spay Day™’s inception in 1995, it is conservatively estimated that participants have altered more than 1,518,000 animals. It has been a proud achievement of Spay Day™ participants like H.E.L.P. Spay Neuter Clinic and Newnan Coweta Humane Society and other spay/neuter programs that the number of homeless cats and dogs euthanized in the U.S. has fallen from ap-proximately 13.5 million in 1973 to fewer than four million currently.

The H.E.L.P. Spay Neuter Clinic, a 501(c)(3) organization, holds as their mission to provide a non-lethal solution to the companion animal over-population. They offer a unique blend of services at a stationary clinic, combined with an active transport program where they travel to a central point in outlying counties and bring animals with appointments to the clinic. The H.E.L.P. Spay Neuter Clinic operates as an outreach affiliate of the Newnan-Coweta Humane Society.

For more information, please visit www.NCH-Srescue.org or www.helpspayneuter.org Appoint-ments can be made by calling the clinic directly at 770-304-7911.

Smoke DetectorsMore Smoke Detectors for Coweta

Citizens Thanks to Sam’s Grant

Seven hundred and fourteen new smoke detec-

tors are now available to needy Coweta homes at

no cost, thanks to a $2500 grant from Sam’s and

the efforts of the Coweta County Fire Department.

The grant allows the CCFD to continue its Safe

Community Initiative by installing smoke detec-

tors in homes where residents might not be able

to afford them. This grant to the CCFD and the

Safe Community Initiative came at a perfect time

on January 20, 2011, just one day after the last of

our supply of smoke detectors had been installed.

If you think you might be eligible to have one of

these smoke detectors installed, call the fire de-

partment at 770-254-3900 and speak with Fire

Marshall Jimmy Gant.

Shown with the 715 smoke detectors are L-R -

Firefighter Brett Osting, Firefighter Jeff Maycum-

ber, Firefighter Josh Moore, Firefighter Bryan

Fuller and Firefighter Dan Hiett.

Smoke detectors make homes safer by provid-

ing early notification in the event of a fire. In Jan-

uary 2011 alone, CCFD responded to two structure

fires where we know that smoke detectors saved

the lives of 5 adults, a 15 year old and a 3 year old.

They were all able to escape unharmed because

they were awakened by the smoke detector. Be

sure to test and maintain your smoke detectors.

Test them monthly by pressing the test button,

change the batteries at least once a year and clean

them periodically by vacuuming them. If you have

gas appliances or a wood burning stove or fire-

place, your home should also have a carbon mon-

oxide detector.

Seven hundred and fourteen new smoke

detectors are now available to needy

Coweta homes at no cost, thanks to a

$2500 grant from Sam’s and the efforts

of the Coweta County Fire Department.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.Are Getting Chilled, Catching Cold Linked?

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My friend and I have an ongoing discussion about how

we catch colds. I believe the only way is by being exposed to a germ. My friend

agrees, but also says you can become chilled, and that results in a cold. Please settle

this once and for all. -- L.G.

ANSWER: The only way to catch a cold is to meet up with a cold virus. But let’s

kick this around a little while it lies there quivering.

Rhinoviruses are responsible for many colds. This virus is passed from one per-

son to another most often via the hands and fingers. An infected person invariably

will have virus on his or her hands and fingers. If that person touches another per-

son’s hands or fingers, the virus is transferred. All the second person has to do is

touch his or her nose or eyes and the virus has found a new home. (The drainage

channel for tears siphons viruses into the nose.) It’s also possible to spread a cold

through sneezing or coughing, but that’s a secondary route.

Many colds are preceded by a body chill. That’s part of the infection symptoms,

and that might be what your friend refers to.

Once a virus lands in a person’s nose, the time till

the development of cold symptoms is short -- eight to

12 hours. Runny nose, nasal stuffiness, scratchy throat,

cough and sneezing are typical symptoms. They peak

in 48 hours and are gone in about one week. A person

is most contagious during the first three days of symp-

toms, when nasal discharge is at high volume and when

it contains the most viruses.

If by “chilling” your friend means being in a cold

blast of air or getting your feet wet in frigid weather and

shivering as a result, she has a slight point. That kind

of chilling constricts the nose’s blood vessels and de-

creases mucus production. It might, therefore, permit

cold viruses to mount a more effective attack and can

contribute to the ease of catching a cold. All the same,

without the virus there is no cold.

Camellias ~ Part II

The ArmchairGardener

Fall through Spring is the best planting time for Camellias. Late Fall

is ideal as the plants are dormant. Dig a hole no deeper than the root

ball of the plant. Allow a foot ofr space all around the plant. Amend

the planting soil about 50/50 with organic matter. Plant a little high so

that it will not settle later. Good drainage is a must. Water in the plant

thoroughly. Continue to water as necessary — even in Winter. Mulch

around the plant with about two inches of pine straw or other mulch.

Protection from strong winds is very important.

Pruning is not necessary; but

proper pruning will give a much

healthier plant. It will improve air

circulation, promote more vig-

orous growth, encourage larger

blooms and help prevent diseas-

es. Twigs growing into the inte-

rior of the camellias and crossing

limbs should be removed. Dead

or diseased leaves and limbs

must be moved. Prune the plants

after blooming in Spring, but be-

fore new growth begins.

Fertilize camellias three times

a year — Spring, Summer and

Fall. A fertilizer formula espe-

cially for camellias is available. Nursery Special or even a fertilizer for

azaleas and rhododendrons is okay.

The most common problems of camellias are several types of scales,

aphids, lice and mites. Camellia flower blight, dieback and root rot are

also dangers. Good growing practices and sanitation are important.

Visit the Atlanta Botanical Gardens collection of camellias. The of-

ficial headquarters for the American Camellia Society is Massee Lane

Gardens in Fort Valley, Georgia. The collection there is vast. The gift

shop has books and other related items. February is the perfect month

to pay a visit, but March is still a good time too. Callaway Gardens in

Pine Mountain, Georgia is also a great place to view camellias.

COWETA COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS’ SPRING PLANT SALE

Mark your calendars to come out and support the Coweta County Master Gardeners’ Spring Plant Sale on April 9th from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The Master Gardeners are volunteers who support UGA Cooperative Ex-tension – Coweta County through community education, raising funds for scholarships and supporting 4-H.

The Master Gardeners have been busy propagating, growing, and trans-planting plants for the upcoming sale. This is a great opportunity to pur-chase vegetable plants, annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees. The sale has grown each year and this year is expected to be better than ever! Each plant will be labeled with growing requirements and if you happen to have ques-tions, Master Gardeners will be available to help.

Master Gardeners will also be available to answer questions regarding weed control, insect problems, plant diseases and plant identification. If you have a diseased plant and you would like help determining the problem, bring a photograph or the part of the plant that is affected (sealed in a zipper bag so we don’t spread the disease) for analysis.

In addition to beautiful plants, hand-crafted stone garden art including bird baths, planters and statues will also be available for purchase. Be sure to bring your wagons or carts and load up for your spring planting. The sale will be held at the Coweta County Fairgrounds, 275 Pine Road, Newnan.

If you have questions or need additional information please contact the Coweta County Extension Office at (770) 254-2620.

Stand up for your schools and be counted! Vote YES to extend E-SPLOST on March 15

Candace Boothby President Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce

Coweta County has one of the best school systems in Georgia. We now boast SAT scores that are higher than the national average and well above the state

average. In addition, we prepare our graduates for the job market so that expanding and re-locating businesses can confidently expect a supply of competent work force for their future.

How fortunate we are in Coweta that we do not face the prospect of attempting to raise our school system to a more acceptable level. Keeping a lead in educational superiority is far less expensive than trying to get there. And when a large percentage of the education sales tax is raised by non-residents’ spending in our stores and restaurants, the continuation of the E-SPLOST is less expensive than raising the monies through increased property taxes.

Our high rate of growth has meant that our schools have had to absorb an increasing number of students. These students require buildings in which to learn, school buses to transport them safely and other capital expenses that ensure Coweta can continue to benefit even during high growth. The March 15 vote is entirely for capital improvements. It allows us to continue to be a superior school system with adequate and basic infrastructure requirements of a productive system.

No one likes to pay taxes but every one of us expects our 911 calls to be answered and public safety personnel to come when we are in need. We expect parks and recreation, road maintenance and other services to be provided. And if we don’t get this level of service, we will probably move to where we can.

I encourage every single voter in Coweta County that wants to stand up for our schools and our community to be counted on March 15! This is very important to our future as a top-quality county in Georgia. Please help continue this blessing by voting “YES” on March 15.

Nan Johnston

So you’re thinking about putting your home on the market, and you know there are a bunch of things that you can do to get ready, but just where do you start?

Well, there are 4 things that I do in every home that I stage to prepare for re-sale, no matter what type of home – large or small – that I am staging. And now I am going to share them with you.

1De-personalize – I know, I know, you have heard it before, but this is huge. You might be surprised, but when someone walks into your home and they are considering purchasing it, when they see a great picture

of your grandchild or a family portrait, now they start thinking about YOU. They say what a beautiful baby or I wonder when this family picture was taken … And they are thinking about YOU and not about THEM living in this house. People get distracted very easily – you want people to be thinking about THEM, not YOU.

2Neutralize the Color Scheme – Did you know that next to scent people react most strongly to color? That means your love of bright or-ange, green and yellow doesn’t necessarily transfer to the person who

might want to purchase your home. Neutral earth tones are calming and of-ten serene – so before putting your house on the market, consider an inside paint job.

3“Edit” Your Rooms – Yes, everyone wants their rooms to feel big-ger. How do you make that happen? By reducing the number of items in your rooms. That doesn’t mean remove everything. In fact, people

have a hard time imagining what will fit in a room if there isn’t something there to give them a sense of space. But you want to reduce items to a bare minimum, with plenty of space for the eye to rest. This visual space will help enhance the size of your room.

4De-Odorize – Did you see it mentioned above? The number one sense that people react to most strongly is scent. So just like a neutral color palette, you are looking for a neutral scent in your home. Try to

minimize doing any cooking that leaves distinct odors, such as the cooking of bacon or fish. And using a product like Oust that kills odor producing bacteria and has flavors like fresh cotton will help “clean” your air without crossing the line into perfume … which is a strong scent that can also gain a negative reaction.

Following these 4 tips will get you well on your way to staging your home. And don’t forget, when you need help, I’m just a phone call or e-mail away!

Newnan Community Theatre Company celebrates the 100th anniversary of

Tennessee Williams’ birth by presenting Williams’ classic The Glass Menagerie

On February 17th, the Newnan Community Theatre Company celebrated the 100th anniversary of Tennessee Williams’ birth by presenting Williams’ classic memory play The Glass Menagerie. This haunting family drama takes place at a particular time in American history, in 1938 right before World War II, just as the country was coming out of the Great Depression. While the setting controls their circumstances, the traits, conflicts and relation-ships of these characters are beyond time and place. They are people we will all recognize, and perhaps we will come away with a deeper understanding of the family members who have made us what we are – for better or worse.

Though not as famous as A Streetcar Named Desire or Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Glass Menagerie is an appropriate anniversary choice because it is a true story drawn from Williams’ own life. Like the character Tom Wingfield, Williams worked in a shoe factory in St. Louis during the Depression. His mother closely resembled Amanda Wingfield, the faded Southern belle and matriarch in the play. His sister Rosa’s sickliness may be represented in Laura Wingfield’s slight limp. Like the absent father Mr. Wingfield, Williams’ father had deserted his family and, like Tom, Williams was the family’s sole support. In the play, Tom Wingfield narrates the story as a memory that has faded into his past but haunts his present.

The Glass Menagerie was first performed on Broadway in 1945 and won a Drama Critics Circle Award. Since then it has been adapted for film twice, once for a television adaptation and a critically acclaimed Indian movie in the Malaysian language. The Glass Menagerie has also been revived for the Broadway stage an amazing five times since its first production in 1945.
