Happy Motoring

Editor’s/Plates Notes I believe a lot of enthusiasts have a great deal to answer for. It is sad that I can now foresee the demise of the brilliant club plates system. I have for many years been very vocal that things like log books would create huge problems. These problems are becoming very evident reading through other club newsletters. We have seen a bust up in the Midwest Historic Club after only 5 years. We recently saw that the Bathurst Club, a very long club in existence has had the plate’s registrar resign with disillusionment. Bathurst has also had a dramatic drop in members attending meetings as well as club runs. I put this all down to one simple well known fact, lack of interest in being a club member and more interest in doing your own thing and using the club to obtain cheap registration. This is what happened in Victoria and all the CLUBS are now is a convenient way to get cheap registration, all the club is, is a name on the permit scheme, simply a register of vehicles, a list of cars you will never see. One of our better members commented to me the other day that he wants to go to Rego day to see all the ghost members. There is a common thread with all the problems, and that is people not wanting the club line, the RMS policy and wanting to do their own thing. Sadly the writing is on the wall, the low cost registration and the use of Club Registered cars will become just another great idea lost by a selfish attitude. Ran into the Bathurst club at McDonalds on the day of the Portland, they had a good roll out of cars considering the weather. We have been invited to attend Altina Wildlife Park with one of the Temora Clubs, it sounds fantastic the park. Problem is that it is 4 hour’s drive from Cowra at Sturt Highway Darlington Point. I have already booked accommodation in Temora for the Jet Boats which are on the Saturday Night before the Wildlife Park. If anyone is interested in either event please let me know. I believe the Wildlife Park has to be booked and numbers in already, so please don’t hesitate if you wish to go. There is NO accommodation Saturday night in Temora, we booked months ago into a B&B as there were no vacancies at any motel. Joke “Charlie Thompson Sadly there are some people with speed dial to the RMS simply because they don't like the logbook system because it takes total control away from plates registrars. Also the odd one just making allegations because of personal vendettas.” Posted on Social media – this person really has no idea – I presume he is talking about me. This person has the personal vendetta, I don’t like log books because it takes away from participating in club activities, after all it is CLUB registration. I have no speed dial to the RMS and only ever reported blatant infringements of the RMS Policy. Certainly no personal vendetta unlike this person who is badmouthing me to people I do not know, it’s just amazing the amount of feedback I get telling me what am really like, all lies. It is the duty of all to report infringements to the RMS. Failure to do so will eventually cause the demise of a great system. Joke A teaser with a difference. See if you can work this out: There was a brothel at the top of a hill, with a large red light at the bottom of the hill.. There were four men .... one was walking briskly up the hill; one was inside the brothel; one was walking slowly down the hill and the fourth man was sitting in his car at the bottom of the hill. What were the nationalities of the four men? hmmmmmm * The man going up the hill: was rushin * The man in the brothel: him-a-layin * The man walking down the hill: was finish Now wait for it .. * The man in the car at the bottom was Irish, and he was waiting for the light to turn green! Lada Niva The Niva was described by its designers as a “Renault 5 put on a Land Rover chassis.” Development began in 1971, after 24th Congress of CPSU, where Alexei Kosygin (then Premier of the Soviet Union) gave task to designers of VAZ and AZLK to create a car suitable for rural areas; for villagers and farmers of the Soviet Union, since the usual Zhiguli, Moskvitch and Zaporozhets, intended firstly for citizens, were not much of use in isolated areas, which were still plenty through the former USSR. In the same year, team of VAZ designers under Vladimir Solovyev as a chief designer began a competition with AZLK in work on a "civilized" four-wheel drive vehicle. The new car was inspired in part by the IZh-14 prototype of 1974.[9] It was VAZ's first model which was not based on Fiat, although much of its mechanics were carried over from the earlier Fiat 124 or 125 based Zhiguli models (mostly VAZ-2103 and 2106). However, the body, four-wheel drive system, and front suspension were designed by VAZ. The first prototypes appeared immediately in 1971 and 1972, but were rejected as too utilitarian, so doors and hardtop were added; this version debuted in 1973 and was generally a major step away from usual off-road vehicles of the period due to using an ordinary car body instead, in this case a classic hatchback of the time. This took inspiration from the prototype known as VAZ-1101 (itself derived from Fiat 127), and was created by designer Valery Pavlovitch. The 1974 prototype was finally derived from one of already existing models, in this case on VAZ-2103 (then newest model in VAZ arsenal), by using its 1,452 cc engine as well as sharing some of its features, like chrome lined bumpers, as well as its headlights and taillights, instruments, seats, steering wheel and other. The 1974 prototype was ready to be put into mass production in 1975; however, the appearance of new VAZ-2106 in the end of the same year resulted in its delaying, due to the fact that another prototype based on it appeared in the meantime. Until the beginning of production, Niva was in trials for years by a team of VAZ testers under Vadim Kotlyarov in most difficult terrains of former Soviet Union, such as Ural mountains and Siberia, as well as deserts of Kazakh SSR and Pamir mountains in Tajik SSR, where it was put against its military counterpart, the UAZ-469 and even against some Western off-road vehicles; the British made Land Rover Series as well as Range Rover Classic and where it showed its outstanding off-road capabilities, mainly due to effective (permanent) four wheel drive system featuring a transfer case and central differential lock, together with its excellent ratio between relatively low weight (just over a ton) and small dimensions combined with high ground clearance (~265mm). Also, its high and narrow wheels (175/80-R16 in dimensions) originally featuring domestically designed Voltyre VLI-5 tires; offering relatively strong ground pressure and thus having good stability against slipping or getting bogged on off-road. For example, on trials during 1973 and 1974, Niva showed it could climb a 58° slope, ford 60 cm (24 in) of water and 100 cm (39 in) of mud or snow Solovyev died in the following year and his place as a chief designer of the project was then taken by engineer Pjotr Prusov, who in the end took credit for creating the car. In 1976 the final prototype appeared, with the engine changed to a 1,568 cc (95.7 cu in) from then newest Lada model, the VAZ-2106 (from which the production model of the first Niva generation was generally derived), with permanent four-wheel drive, transfer case and a lockable central differential.[10] The VAZ prototype showed better design and results than its AZLK counterpart, the Moskvitch 416 and so was, after 25th Congress of CPSU, approved for production in March of the same year (Moskvitch prototype was then rejected for serial production by the government) as the Niva 1600 (Field) for export, or VAZ-2121 (alternatively Niva 2121 or simply VAZ Niva) for domestic market, that is, for former Soviet Union . For domestic customers, it was described as: Car of high speed, improved capabilities and comfort like in all VAZ models, or also as: Combination of speed and comfort of Zhiguli and capabilities of UAZ. Actual production began in the following year; on 5 April 1977, while the first export models appeared in 1978 at Paris Motor Salon and rapidly captured at least forty percent of Europe's market for four-wheel drive vehicles, making it Lada's top-selling export. Moreover, it became the one and only Soviet car which was sold in Japan, starting from early 1980s and it thus inspired their Suzuki Samurai. Because of export demand, and higher priority for exports, domestic customers faced long waiting lists, despite the fact that the car being developed firstly for Soviet people, as mentioned in the beginning.

Current model in production, the Lada Niva 1.7i 3-door hatchback (VAZ-21214) 5-door station wagon (VAZ-2131) in Cuba. Initially, the Niva had a carburetted 1.6-litre overhead cam four-cylinder petrol engine producing 56 kW (76 hp) and 126 N·m (93 lb·ft) at 5,000 rpm, a four-speed manual transmission, (starting with new model from 1994, a 5 speed) and a full-time four-wheel drive. The drive system employs three differentials (center, front and rear). The transfer case involves a high/low range selector lever and a central differential lock lever. Low range can be

selected with the center differential locked or unlocked. The original Niva had a maximum speed of 81 mph (130 km/h), and can cruise at 56 mph (90 km/h) while consuming petrol at 8.25 L/100 km (34.2 mpg‑imp; 28.5 mpg‑US). Its towing capacity is rated for up to 860 kg (1900 lb). Coil springs are located at each of the four wheels, and suspension is independent in front, whereas the rear axle is a 5 link live-type, with ratios between 3.90 and 4.30 depending on the model and market. Ground clearance is good at 235 mm (9.25 in) and water 510 mm (20 in) deep can be negotiated. The brakes (disc front, drum rear) are servo-assisted dual-circuit style and the clutch is hydraulic. The turning circle is a relatively low 36.25'. Cargo space is 0.48 m³ (17 ft³), or 1.33 m³ (47 ft³) with the rear seats folded down and, like the classic Zhiguli, the front seats can be set up to make two berths (by removing headrests, shifting the seats into foremost position and setting the backrest in plane with the back seat - this feature later disappeared when the new model with different seats was introduced in 1994). A spare tyre is located in the engine bay under the bonnet. The latter feature is considered a useful and practical feature by off-road fans.

Additional equipment for basic model was rather simple and was equal to other Lada and generally Eastern bloc cars of the period, it included headlight wipers, rear fog lamp, right external mirror (right mirror for domestic models only since the export ones had both by default, however, at the end of 1980s even domestic models of all Lada cars also received both mirrors), then rear seat belts, rear (tailgate) window wiper, rear window heater and a radio set. On new model (Niva 1.7/VAZ-21213) starting from 1994, all those features except headlight wipers and rear fog

lamp (which are discontinued) became default and optional is air conditioning, anti-lock braking system and hydraulic servomotor for the steering column, which are, now however, becoming parts of standard equipment on the newest models. Foreign (usually Western) local Lada importers often also offered their own additional equipment (mainly for off-roading) prior to buying the car, such as front and rear bull bars and roll bars as well as side rocker rails, roof rails, winch, fender plastics and additional headlights for front bumper and for roof rails, which can be often seen mounted on many Nivas.

Lada Niva T3 Rally The existing model was slightly restyled during first half of 1980s, when VAZ for the first time discontinued one of its models, the VAZ-2103 (which was slowly being replaced with VAZ-2106 since 1975). Some of the chrome lined elements have disappeared in all future models due to high price and complexity of production, such as, in Niva case, the chrome lined mask and rocker panel edges which were removed, as well as external/side mirrors which became black metallic. Chrome even disappeared from ashtrays and door panel edges. Also, background of front Lada badge was changed to white (later black; on new model) on all models instead of red as until

then. Rear Niva 1600 tailgate label, (which was originally located in the center of the tailgate), was relocated to its right corner due to rear window wiper which was, on buyer request, installed onto its former place as additional equipment. Side rear retroreflectors (or turn signals on some models; depended on market) were replaced by Lada (left) and Niva (right) labels and the rear mud flaps received the plant logo on them. Interior was only minimally changed, along with some minor changes to the instrument panel, choke knob and other details; probably the most notable difference is in its VAZ-2106 steering wheel, which was now decorated with classic Russian ornaments featuring the Lada logo on its central (leather) part. Those pre 1985 models are visually best recognizable by mentioned details and are today extremely rare (in preserved condition almost non-existent anymore) and due to that very valued by collectors.

The first generation (VAZ-2121 Niva, or Lada Niva 1600 as known commercially) was in production until 1993 (existing in parallel in production with new model until the end of the same year) when the new and more powerful (1.7 litre, 80 horsepower) four-cylinder petrol engine (designed purposely for Niva and thus, not used by any other VAZ model until then) was introduced, replacing the previously used (1.6 litre, 75 horsepower) VAZ-2106 engine and making the appearance of the new model (VAZ-21213/21214 or Lada Niva 1.7/1.7i), as was the carburettor replaced by single-point fuel injection supplied initially by General Motors on 21214/1.7i model and the usual Weber carburettor was replaced by improved Solex one on 21213/1.7 model. The transmission was changed from 4 to 5 speed, mechanical ignition was replaced with electronic and suspension received some relatively minor changes. Also, the exterior rear section of the body was redesigned with tailgate extended and license plate as a part of it (so it could have a lower opening, now bordering with the rear bumper), due to which it also received new, vertical taillights derived from VAZ-2104, replacing the former VAZ-2106 horizontal ones and VAZ-2102 chrome lined tailgate knob, which was replaced by a simple plastic handle. On newest models, the old hand adjustable, black metallic (previously chrome lined) side mirrors, which were originating back from 1970s VAZ-2103 were finally replaced with larger plastic ones featuring automatic adjustment. The previous front Lada badge was also replaced with the current and larger one of ellipsoid design. However, the aging Fiat 125 chrome lined doorknobs are still present, although they are not chromed anymore on newest models, but plastic. Although the rest of the exteriors remained generally unchanged to this day (except for LADA 4x4 URBAN and BRONTO), the interior was, however, almost completely redesigned and shares only few interchangeable parts with the previous one; the archaic VAZ-2106 steering wheel with chrome elements was replaced with more modern and thicker one, firstly from VAZ-2107 and later even newer, as well as its VAZ-2103/2106 instruments, which were replaced with dashboard from VAZ-21099. The berth foldable, black artificial leather seats, which were also originating from VAZ-2106 were replaced by more modern and higher ones from VAZ-2108 with front surface made out of polyester (with which the berth feature disappeared), while the rear seat was improved to have easier folding. The old Fiat 124 swivelling windows from side doors disappeared and were replaced with air conditioning for that role, which is on request, (together with ABS and servomotor for the steering column) installed as additional equipment, while headlight wipers and rear fog lamp disappeared. It also received completely new front and door panels, various plastics and even new floor mats. The interior door knobs were relocated above the handrests instead of under like on previous generation and hand opening of side door windows was replaced with automatic on newest models (and on LADA 4x4 URBAN), starting from 2014. Multi-point fuel injection designed by Bosch is used currently since 2004, replacing the previously mentioned single-point injection from General Motors, which was used until then. In 1993, the lengthened Niva model also appeared, it was known as VAZ-2129 and was being produced very briefly (only for approximately a year) due to which it is very rare and was also never exported. Although having a much longer wheelbase, it retained usual 3 doors like the basic hatchback model (it only featured additional square middle window added at the sides), however, in design it was actually a hybrid of old and new generation, since it featured the old VAZ-2121 (Niva 1600) body and interiors combined with new VAZ-21213 (Niva 1.7) 1,680cc engine and 5 speed transmission (although later, 1994 production models featured even new body and interiors). In 1995, the lengthened estate model with longer wheelbase and 5 door appeared, originally known as VAZ-2131 Niva, commercially it has no difference in name than standard (3 door) model, which is why it is often referred simply as Niva 5 door. Due to longer wheelbase and thus, increased weight, it can use even more powerful; 1.774cc inline four petrol engine, producing 63kW/85 hp. Although still in production like the basic model, It saw relatively limited use and is also slightly exported, mainly due to longer wheelbase and increased weight offering somewhat inferior off-road capabilities as well as slightly higher price when compared to the standard model. In 2015, the 5 door model also appeared for LADA 4x4 URBAN. In 1999, a diesel engine model of Niva appeared for the first time, known as VAZ-21215 Niva or commercially as Lada Niva 1.9, which was produced until 2007 and sold only in few markets. It was powered by a 1,905cc Peugeot XUD 9SD inline four diesel engine, delivering 55kW/75 hp and was thus slightly less powerful than standard VAZ-21213/21214 1,680cc petrol engine (it was approximately equal in power to 1,568cc VAZ-2106 engine used by the previous generation). However, the VAZ-21215 was a relatively shortly lived model and is not available anymore due of the fact that, despite much lower fuel consumption, it was not very popular in domestic market (mainly due to harsh winter conditions, less power, lower reliability, higher price and maintenance costs when compared

Page 7: The Cowra Crankhandle · 08-08-2018  · The VAZ prototype showed better design and results than its AZLK counterpart, the Moskvitch 416 and so was, after 25th Congress of CPSU, approved

to the petrol engine model) as well as the fact that Peugeot stopped production of mentioned XUD engines back in 2001 (existing supplies were available until 2007 when the last VAZ-21215 came off production line) and VAZ never made another contract for production of diesel engine for Niva. In 2006, the model with carburetted engine of new generation (VAZ-21213/Lada Niva 1.7) was discontinued and, in the same year, the name Niva was formally dropped in favour to new official name LADA 4x4 (although the former name was still being used in export markets at least until 2009 and it is still informally used world wide). This was done due to the fact that previously mentioned American General Motors company (which firstly supplied injection system to VAZ) got rights to the name Niva, which had to be discontinued in further production, together with old Soviet VAZ-2121 classification for domestic market, which was loosely abandoned by the plant itself back in the end of 1990s. In 2014, the new, restyled model called LADA 4x4 URBAN appeared, with generally more modern looks resembling an ordinary SUV; new mask, plastic bumpers, new side mirrors, different (aluminium) rims (with original Soviet Voltyre VLI-5 off-road tires replaced with classic road tires), central brake light, heated front seats, airbags and slightly restyled interior. However, it did not replace the current LADA 4x4 (previously known as Lada Niva 1.7i, or VAZ-21214 for domestic market) which still remains parallel in production with it. In 2017, another model appeared; the LADA 4x4 BRONTO, intended firstly for off-road use. It features characteristic mask and plastic bumpers with integrated front and rear fog lamps as well as plastic roof rails and larger wheels with new, black aluminium rims featuring new; 235/75-R16 Bontyre Stalker domestically produced off-road tires, even higher ground clearance (increased for further 35mm) and plastic rust-protected body edges (fenders and rocker panels). Internally, it is similar to LADA 4x4 URBAN also featuring heated front seats and airbags. Additional equipment includes front winch, roof headlights and additional fog lights on front bumper. With all mentioned equipment included, the LADA 4x4 BRONTO is currently the most expensive LADA 4x4 model with current price of 720.000 RU in domestic market (around € 10.130). The slightly different pickup model designed by VIS was also revealed (featuring integrated metallic grille, different bumpers and a snorkel), called LADA BRONTO AMC, however, according to LADA official website, it is not serially produced yet due to the fact that it is not offered anywhere on sale. On 5 April of the same year; at the car's 40th anniversary since the beginning of production, a special, limited edition of classic LADA 4x4 was presented, called LADA 4x4 40 anniversary, which was made in exactly 1977 copies (the year when Lada Niva appeared). It features new aluminium rims, (similar to LADA 4x4 URBAN) as well as 5 new colour schemes, 40 anniversary metallic labels on fenders, tailgate and internally on glove compartment cover, front seat backrests and on floor mats. Also, it has slightly restyled interior featuring genuine leather seat upholstery and steering wheel cover as well as sills made out of stainless steel. The model is available from June 2017 on both domestic and export markets. A soft top version appeared back in 1983, however it was neither serially produced nor designed by its native VAZ, but was actually just a modification of the original Niva 1600 (2121) bodied by French coachbuilder Wassermann for the local market.[3] This was known as the Niva Plain Soleil (Sunlight) and was just one of many Niva modifications made by local importers for their markets. (Lada Cossack, Hussar and Lada Taiga as an example, were modifications for British and West German market).[12]

4 tbsp Flour For the frosting: 1/2 cup softened butter 2-1/4 cups confectioners’ sugar 1/2 cup Hershey’s cocoa 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 cup milk Caramel sauce - optional Instructions For the cake: Mix together all of the ingredients in a microwavable mug. Microwave for 70 seconds. Allow to cool before adding frosting on top. For the frosting: It’s easiest to mix in a stand mixer, but you may also do it by hand. Cream butter until smooth. Add in vanilla. Gradually beat in confectioners’ sugar and cocoa. Add milk. You may add more or less milk to get it to the consistency you’re looking for. Place frosting on top of cooled mug of cake, Drizzle with caramel sauce if desired. The frosting makes enough to frost a 9″ x 11″ cake. So save the extra frosting for your next cup of cake.

Sometimes even with elbow grease you can’t get that stubborn dirt out. Here are some great tips to help you with your spring cleaning. Your Coffee Pot: Fill your coffee pot brewer half way with vinegar. Brew like you would coffee. Once that brewing cycle is done, empty the vinegar. Fill the coffee maker up with water—all the way up this time. Run another brewing cycle. Repeat the water cycle at least three times. Coffee stains gone!!! Shower Curtains: Drop one bleach resistant towel into your washer first. Then layer

the shower curtain over that towel. Then put in another towel on top. Pour in your favourite laundry detergent and start the washer. A few minutes into the cycle, pour in a little bleach. Run through an extra spin cycle or two to avoid puddles on the floor. This will get rid of mildew on your shower curtains. Table Rings: Mix roughly equal parts of olive oil and salt together. Create a thick paste. Rub into rings. Half an hour later, wipe away the oil and salt, and be amazed: No more stains. Rust Stains on Porcelain: Cut a lemon in half. Rub the cut end over the worst of your offending rust stains. You might even want to squeeze a bit; the more lemon juice you transfer to the surface, the less elbow grease you’ll have to apply later. Leave on

for 3 hours then rinse off. Then pour a fourth of a cup of salt onto a nylon brush and scrub. The acid in the lemon combines with the abrasiveness of the salt to blast those stains into the void. Pillows: Use this special recipe to get your pillows gleaming white again. Fill your washing machine about a third of the way with hot water. Throw in one cup each of liquid laundry detergent, powdered laundry detergent and bleach. Add a half cup of Borax. Then wash the pillows on the hottest water your washing machine can pump out. Five surgeons are discussing who makes the Best patients to operate on. The first surgeon, says, "I like to see accountants on my operating table because when you open them up, everything inside is numbered." The second, responds, "Yeah, but you should try electricians! Everything inside them is colour coded." The third surgeon, says, "No, I really think librarians are the best! Everything inside them is in alphabetical order." The fourth surgeon chimes in: "You know, I like construction workers...

Those guys always understand when you have a few parts left over.' But the fifth surgeon, shut them all up when he said: 'You're all wrong. Politicians are the easiest to operate on. There's no guts, no heart, no balls, no brains, and no spine... Plus, the head and the ass are interchangeable! Submitted by Ray Heilman

Joke

The mechanic A Lexus mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a LS460 when he spotted a well-known cardiologist in his shop. The cardiologist was there waiting for the service manager to come and take a look at his car when the mechanic shouted across the garage, "Hey, Doc, want to take a look at this?" The cardiologist, a bit surprised, walked over to where the mechanic was working. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, "So Doc, look at this engine. I opened its heart, took the valves out, repaired or replaced anything damaged, and then put everything back in, and when I finished it worked just like new. So, how is it that I make $48,000 a year and you make $1.7M when you and I are doing basically the same work?" The cardiologist paused, leaned over, and then whispered to the mechanic..."Try doing it with the engine running." Colleen Sydenham

July Open Day 29th July

Was it a good day, or was it a bad day. Not sure myself as things just went wrong. Opening up my mind was elsewhere on witches hats placed near the water main. I was heading over to look at the hats when Kevin said to me “weren’t you putting up the flag”. Change of direction, grabbed flag and took to pole. The rope has been untied for a while and flapping about. Untwisting the rope took a while and finally raised the flag to about halfway and TWANG, the rope broke about 300 mm from the top. The next few hours was spent trying to work out how to hook something to the broken rope and pull it through the pulley. The other side of the pulley the rope has the flag hooks and joined so it can’t go back through the pulley I devised a length of twine with a slip knot fed through a length of PVC pipe, manipulate up and slip the twine over the rope sticking out. Pull the twine through the pulley and tie a new rope to the twine and feedback. TOTAL failure, members worried about OHS issues with the ladder and that the PCV was too flexible and to be safe on the ground the PVC was too short. So now a cheery picker is required to feed in a new flagpole rope. Why was my mind on the witch’s hats, because I got a call from the Council telling me that there was a big water leak at the station and they had put witches hats on the leak. Turned out my previous repair came apart and the withes hat was placed to indicate where the water meter is placed. The witches’ hats had grown from one to about 6 or more. When I finally got to check out the witches hats they belong to Cowra Mowing, not the Council and were accidently left behind the day before. Visitors made it a brilliant day and with the Ironbark BBQ selling meats it was a very busy day, made up somewhat for the flagpole. There was also a good deal of members there during the day. Bob Grimshaw bought a CD of Eugowra and surrounds from the mid-fifties. The little bits I saw were fantastic; I’d like to see the whole thing. Missed it all because of the flag pole rope. Jowed BBQ meats are sensational; worth every cent you pay and were a nice treat for lunch. With the clubs permission which has to be discussed, later in the year putting on a food fest at the station. The idea is to invite a local different food stalls to a night at the station. Early discussion is proceeds to Drought Relief. A lot will have to be discussed before the club approves the event. Suburban Theatres and the Impact of TV

Before the digital age and the internet, the cinema was a major part of Australia’s social life. On Saturday nights in the 1930s, 40s and 50s, everyone went — or tried to go — to “the pictures”. For the children of that era, the weekly matinee at the local cinema was the highlight of the week. Two movies, a cartoon, a serial (which brought them back each week) and a newsreel – all for the glorious price of 6 pence (5 cents). The cinema was a community place, one where you took family or met up with friends, and romances grew in the back rows. It was how many Australians had their

first glimpse of the world beyond their homeland. The hard times of the Great Depression, when few families had spare pennies, actually increased the appeal and the audience for cinema. It seemed the worse life became, the more people craved the escape that movies offered. Then came World War II, when the appetite for news (with moving pictures) grew. A new form of cinema — for newsreels — flourished for a time. Times changed, and when television arrived in 1956, the clock was ticking for the cinemas. Closures became the norm in the 1960s and 70s, and beyond the advent of VHS in the early 1980s, few survived beyond the memories of many. The Concord Theatres Theatre flourished in Concord where, over the years, there were three cinemas. The first was AL FRESCO PICTURES, which opened in 1912 at 8 Parramatta Road, Concord. By 1917 it had become CONCORD PICTURES. Around the 1920 it was rebuilt as a single storey brick building, running away from Parramatta Road, rather than parallel to it as the old Al Fresco had been. A plain unceiled and unadorned building, it had a raked floor and a stage with dressing room below. With the opening of nearby Strathfield Melba in 1920 and Homebush Cinemas in 1925 the days of Concord Pictures was numbered. In 1928 it was listed as THAIS PICTURES. However, in 1929 the building was leased and became Burwood Bedding. In 1940 the Department of Main Roads acquired a section of the property and, when Parramatta Road was eventually widened, the front of the building (including the former entry and the projection box) was removed.

Cowra Crankhandle Page 12

Yet, today, much of the building remains unchanged, right down to the raked auditorium floor. It is one of Sydney’s few remaining silent picture theatre buildings. The next theatre to be built in Concord was THE CENTRAL PICTURE PALACE at the corner of Majors Bay Road and Jellico Street. It was a one-level theatre and a solid looking building with walls of brick and a roof of galvanised iron, seating 1100. It opened in May 1921. Screenings were on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Later the theatre was rebuilt as an 1150-seat, two-level building, and renamed the RITZ. However, after a period of falling patronage in the late 1950s a restricted screening policy was introduced and remained until January 1960 when it finally closed. Since that time it has been used for various purposes but is now a coffee shop.

Arcadia Theatre Concord West Arcadia Theatre, Concord West The third theatre to open, in December 1928, was the CONCORD WEST THEATRE at 307 Concord Road (corner of Nirranda Street). By the end of the 1930s it had been renamed the ARCDADIA. Then, in 1938, under a new owner, it was renamed the ROYAL. In 1954 it again underwent a change, becoming the ODEON. It continued operating until late 1959 when it was converted

into a furniture store but, in late 1969 it was demolished to make way for a fast food outlet. To hear more about the effect of Television on suburban theatres join us on Saturday, 1st September at 2:00 pm to hear Ian Hanson expand on this subject. Note: the front doors of this theatre were fitted to the Denning’s residence in Concord as sliding doors between lounge room and sun room. Have You Ever Wondered Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin?

Why can’t women put on mascara with their mouth closed?

Why don’t you ever see the headline ‘Psychic Wins Lottery’?

Why is ‘abbreviated’ such a long word?

Why is it that doctors call what they do ‘practice’?

Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavouring, and dish washing liquid made with real lemons?

Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker?

Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?

Why isn’t there mouse-flavoured cat food?

Why didn’t Noah swat those two mosquitoes?

Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections?

Why do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in our driveways and put our useless junk in the garage.

HOW TO SHOWER LIKE A WOMAN:

Take off clothing and place it in sectioned laundry hamper according to lights and darks. Walk to bathroom wearing long robe. If you see husband along the way, cover up any exposed areas. Look at your womanly physique in the mirror — make mental note to do more sit-ups/leg-lifts, etc. Get in the shower. Use wash cloth, long loofah, wide loofah and pumice stone. Wash your hair once with cucumber and sage shampoo with 43 added vitamins. Wash your hair again to make sure it's clean. Condition your hair with grapefruit mint conditioner. Wash your face with crushed apricot facial scrub for 10 minutes until red. Wash entire rest of body with ginger nut and Jaffa cake body wash. Rinse conditioner off hair. Shave armpits and legs. Rinse off. Turn off shower. Squeegee off all wet surfaces in shower, Spray mould spots with Tilex. Get out of shower. Dry with towel the size of a small country. Wrap hair in super absorbent towel. Return to bedroom wearing long robe and towel on your head. If you see husband along the way, cover up any exposed areas.

HOW TO SHOWER LIKE A MANY- Take off clothes while sitting on the edge of the bed and them in a pile on the floor. Walk naked to the Bathroom. If you see wife along the way shake manhood at her making the Woo -woo sound. Look at your manly physique in the mirror. Admire the size of your manhood and scratch your butt. Get in the shower. Wash your face. Wash your armpits. Blow your nose into your hands and the water rinse them off. Fart and laugh how loud it sounds shower. Spend majority of time washing privates and area. Wash your butt leaving those coarse butt hairs stuck on the soap. Wash your hair. Make a shampoo Mohawk. Pee. Rinse off and get out of shower. Partially dry off. Fail to notice the water on floor because curtain was hanging out of tub the whole time. Admire your manhood size mirror again. Leave shower curtain open, wet mat on floor and light and fan on. Return to bedroom with towel around waist. If you pass wife, pull off towel shake your manhood at her and make the woo - woo sound again. Throw wet towel top on dirty clothes on floor. A farmer and his brand new bride were riding home from the chapel in a wagon pulled by a team of horses when the older horse stumbled. The farmer said. -That's once. A little further along poor old horse stumbled again. The farmer said, -That’s twice.- After a little while the poor old horse stumbled again. The farmer didn't say anything, but reached under the seat, pulled out a shotgun and shot the horse. His brand bride yelled "What did you do that for." The farmer said. "That's once." 50 vehicles inspected on Rego Day 22 inspected prior to Rego Day 13 to be inspected after Rego Day 1 Pink Slip 1 Total Failure – brakes – easy fix 1 Almost fail due to lights It was a great day, so smooth that there was very little if any waiting time for inspections. Atrocious weather got to a maximum of 11 degrees just before closing. No profit on BBQ probably because people weren’t hanging around because of the weather. Although a quite a few did huddle around the fire for quite some time.

HUGE THANKS - to all the scrutineers, an excellent job, Ken Masters, Steven Barker, Ian Reid, John Mooney, Jeffry Curtis who with Ben Denning tested all the brakes. New job for Jeffry who was absolutely excellent, mkes the registrar’s job much easier with a fantastic team. I should not forget Kathy Denning, club secretary, who handled all the booking in, money, shopping for BBQ, insurance records, supplied items for raffle, sold raffle tickets. This year Kathy did it all with no assistance, what a lady. Then Peter Hollier who did all the cooking, Kevin Thrupp, BBQ trailer, plus other jobs, Kevin bought trailer from club room, consumables and then took everything back when day over. The raffle winners were 1st Dennis Sayles - 2nd Jeffry Curtis - 3rd Ian Reid Thanks to Cowra Marine for their ongoing support and use of their premises. Almost Portland Sunday 19th

Interesting day, made it to Bathurst and the group decided to go no further due to snow and the possibility of getting snowed in at Portland. In reality the decision had already been made “snow in Blayney the run will not happen, no if or buts” as sent in emails and on FaceBook Snowed heavily just before Blayney, no snow in Blayney. Just out of Blayney and heavy settling snow again. 10 kilometres up the road at Fitzgerald mount the sun came out, no sign of rain or snow. Return trip stop in Blayney, HAIL, then snow, then hail again. Near Carcoar bright sunshine. Stopping for Coffee at Stokes in Carcoar, heavy snow, then hail. The weather changed every few kilometres. Great day with good friends
