Editor’s/Plates Notes

Notification from Bob Grimshaw of the Canowindra Driver Reviver meeting to be held at Canowindra Bowling Club 2nd January at 6:30 pm.

Yet another computer failure, this time after a windows 10 automatic update, cost me $154 to get it repaired at Leading Edge. Got it home and backed up the CAVC folder onto another disc drive. Bit lucky as windows wasn’t working properly. Contacted Microsoft who got into my computer and found my windows profile was causing the start-up problem. Microsoft created a new identity for me and it worked. Only problem is all my desktop folders were now gone, all my passwords – GONE. To make it worse my email contacts are also all gone. Lots of work putting them all back in. So please can you send me an email to save a lot of work. The contacts are all on the computer in a .pst file but I can’t access them. Hopefully Leading Edge will allow me to use their remote hard drive to get all my files and pictures back. So glad though that I backed up the CAVC folder before the second collapse.

Pre - 1950s Australian Automotive History

The car can be traced back as far as the 17th Century, although this was just a model which was not big enough to carry a person. However, this example is still seen as the first steam powered car. It wasn’t until the late 18th century that steam powered vehicles were big enough to carry people and by 1801, such vehicles were on the road of Britain. By the mid 1800’s the automotive industry was nearly ended by the introduction of a law that meant a man with a red flag and a horn had to walk in front of any steam powered vehicles. This law was not removed until the late 1800’s making automotive driving extremely

difficult.

After the law in Britain was imposed, automotive production began to thrive in the United States and other European countries, most prominently Germany. Karl Benz (Mercedes Benz) received his first German patent on May 8, 1886 Benz Patent Motorwagen, which is mostly seen by car Historians as the first Automobile. By the early 1900’s France was the leading manufacturer of cars, starting under licence from Karl Benz. However, Panhard et Levassor was the first company opened to build just cars, closely follow by Peugeot. By 1903, France represented nearly 50% of the global automobile production.

Brass/Edwardian Era

From the 1905 to 1914 (the start of World War I) the Brass/Edwardian era of automobile manufacture saw different power systems and designs being thought of and refined. Technologies that were pioneered in this era included; electronic ignition systems, four wheel breaks, independent suspension, safety glass, steel frames and finally, transmission and throttle controls. Notable cars of this era included the Ford Model T (most produced car), Mercer Raceabout (first sports car) and the Bugatti Type 13 (racing car). In Australia Holden & Frost open a motor trimming business, Holdfast Trimming.

General Motors began importing vehicles into Australia at the beginning of the vintage era. During this period other modern features of cars were pioneered including front end engines, hydraulic brakes, tempered glass and gears. War time restrictions in Australia in 1917 led to the import of one complete car per 3 chassis being implemented. These restrictions lead Holden & Frost to open Holden Motor Body builders. Throughout the 1920’s HMBB thrived making car bodies for Dodge, Buick, Chevrolet and more. In 1926 General Motors Australia Pty Ltd was formed. However, by the end of the vintage era in the 1930’s the global downturn from the Wall Street crash sees Holden going out of business.

Pre WWII Era

The pre-WWII era began just after crash of Wall Street in 1930, which saw Holden Motor Body Builders on the brink of dissolving. However, in 1931 General Motors stepped in and purchased the company forming a merger called General Motors-Holden Ltd. During this period many of the features of modern cars had been invented and under GM, Holden flourished. By 1935 Holden had produced its first completed enclosed coupe for companies such as Chevrolet. By 1937 Holden claimed 40 per cent of the vehicle market and started plans for its first complete car. During WWII Holden was at the disposal of the Australian government and the complete car project was put on hold.

Post WWII Era

The post WWII era saw Holden begin The Project 2000 car design armed with knowledge gathered from war production. After a trip to America in 1946, a handmade model was shipped to Australia and throughout 1947 the car was extensively tested. By 5th April 1948 the car (called the FX) was released to a massive audience including the Prime Minister of Australia and production began to average 10 per day. By the end of the era the demand for the Holden was more than supply will allow with an overflowing waiting list. By 1949 20,000 cars were being produced annually.

Shearer car

Brothers David and John Shearer established a blacksmithing and implement making business in Mannum in 1877. In 1894 David Shearer began construction of Australia’s first car. He worked on the project for many years. Shearer’s final design was a ‘horseless carriage’ powered by steam with local mallee firing the engine. It was first driven in 1897. In 1900 it was shown in Adelaide at the Adelaide Chamber of Manufacturers Exhibition, Shearer having gained special permission from the city council for it to be driven in the city streets. Shearer was not interested in manufacturing cars; he merely wanted to prove that the horseless carriage was a workable proposal. After his success, he returned to manufacturing agricultural machinery.

Steps Individual nacho cobs Preheat oven to 180°C. Slice tops from bread rolls. Scoop out bread, leaving a 1.5cm edge. Tear bread into rough pieces, add to bowl and toss with oil. Place on an oven tray with rolls. Bake for 4-5 minutes until golden. Remove bread crisps. Meanwhile, in a large frying pan, heat remaining oil on high. Sauté green onions for 2 minutes. Add beef mince, brown well, for 4-5 minutes, breaking up lumps. Stir taco seasoning through, cook for 1 minute. Cool slightly. Stir cream cheese, smoked cheese, sour cream, coriander and lime juice though. Spoon dip into rolls. Bake for 15-20 minutes until dip has warmed through. Top rolls with chopped tomato and coriander leaves. Accompany lime wedges, sweet chilli sauce and sour cream.

Butterscotch pie This decadent butterscotch pie will satisfy the cravings of any sweet tooth. The only problem with this luscious dish is trying to decide whether to serve it with lashings of whipped cream, or ice-cream. Ingredients Butterscotch pie 1 1/2 cups(225g) plain flour 250 gcold butter, chopped 1 egg yolk 3 tspiced water, approximately 2 x 400g can sweetened condensed milk 1/3 cup(80ml) golden syrup 3/4 cup(180ml) cream 80 gpackaged butterscotch, crushed

Steps Sift flour into bowl, rub in half the butter (or process flour and butter until mixture resembles breadcrumbs). Add egg yolk and enough water to make ingredients cling together (or process until ingredients just come together). Press dough into a ball, knead gently on floured surface until smooth. Wrap in plastic; refrigerate 30 minutes. Grease 24cm round loose-base flan tin. Roll pastry between sheets of baking paper until large enough to line tin. Lift pastry into tin, ease into side; trim edge. Prick pastry base with fork; refrigerate 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 200°C (180°C fan-forced). Line pastry with baking paper, fill with dried beans or rice; place on oven tray. Bake 10 minutes. Remove paper and beans; bake further 10 minutes or until browned. Cool. Cook condensed milk, golden syrup and remaining butter in heavy-based saucepan, stirring, about 20 minutes or until mixture is dark golden-brown. Stand mixture 10 minutes, stir in cream; strain, cover; cool. Spread mixture into pastry case, refrigerate until firm. Decorate with crushed butterscotch. Serve with whipped cream, if you like.

THE PRICE OF PETROL These examples do NOT imply that petrol is cheap; it just illustrates how outrageous some prices are. So, you think a litre of petrol is expensive? (This makes you think, and also puts things into perspective.) Can of Red Bull, 250ml, $2.95 ... $11.80 per litre! Robitussin Cough Mixture, 200m', $9.95 $ 49.75 per litre! L’Oréal Revitalift Day Cream, 50ml, $29.95 $599.00 per litre! Bundy Rum, 1250m', $51.00.... $40.80 per litre! Visine Eye Drops, 15ml, $5.69 $379.00 per litre!

Britney Spears Fantasy Perfume, 50ml, $29 $580.00 per litre! And this is the REAL KICKER. Evian water, 375ml, $2.95 ...$7.86 per litre! $7.86 for a litre of WATER!! Someone calculated the cost of the ink at, you won't believe it but it's true; $1,040 a litre. S1040.oo So, the next time you're at the pump, be glad your car doesn't run on water, Red Bull, Robitussin, L’Oréal or, printer ink! l!!!

Huntley Berry Farm 25th November

Only one car from Cowra and two members from Bathurst met at Blayney for morning tea. The farm is an interesting place and worth a visit, but with the heat and the lack of seating in the shade, it wasn’t a good day for oldies. Kids and young adults had a great day. Plenty of stalls and attractions, even tractor trailer rides. As we were just visitors we parked with other vehicles for the long walk to the entertainment. Plenty of the beautiful strawberries I have ever tasted to be self-picked. There was to be blueberries but they were picked totally by the time we got there. The trip home was hot, the car and the occupants. The car had WOWED me on the way to Huntley pulling up Burley Jack in fourth gear effortlessly, started misfiring just out of Cowra. Great drive and that’s what it is all about being in a club and going for a drive, destination is really unimportant. Wayne Reeks Peugeot 404 George Smith Peugeot 504 Russell Denning Alfetta GTV

Open Day 25th November

A bit of excitement with one member having a fall - skinned his shin after tripping to move a hose - not at

all pretty and a trip up to the hospital for repairs. 60 minutes later back at Railway Station at least thirty stitches. Glad to say patient at 3:30 pm is at home with his leg up snoring, why I'm glad is that with the seriousness

of the wound I would have thought he would be in severe pain. The rest of the day was much less exciting but still busy - far too hot to be doing anything.

Christmas Party 3rd December

Cowra has had a lot of rain over the last two days, except for being cool; the weather was pretty good with the rain holding off all day. The meal was pretty good, definite value for money. Although the dessert of Christmas pudding was pretty solid, almost bent spoon trying to coy, but the taste was just superb. We were entertained and entertained ourselves with some singing Christmas songs led by Heather, we had two singing session where everyone was seen to join in. Good food, nice atmosphere and good company led to a successful party. Bob & Mary Gittoes apologised for not being able to make it as Mary had a bit of a turn, David & Sue Barrand sent me a message that they were still stuck in Melbourne. Peter Watson dropped in for morning tea and took one of the seats. I do hope Mary is on the improve; it’s not good to hear after the bad run so far this year.

Pic a Park 5th December

Not an old car to be seem, everyone had a reason, but it just goes to prove you don’t need an old car to be in the club Great night with lots of varied conversations, some reminiscing about club runs, about previous cars, planes, fact is so many things talked about time flew past. A good few laughs, Vic phoned last night to apologise as he was in Canberra and rushed back for pic a park – only to be told – it’s Monday not Tuesday he was a day in front. Vic phoned Tuesday to check if we were meeting at the station or going straight there – glad he did because both Kathy and I had forgotten. Part of the reason also for no club cars, I had just locked up the shed, left the Volvo out minus air conditioning compressor. It was too late to get a car out, Vic has a leaking fuel tank, John has battery charging concerns and Dave’s car is not yet registered.

But it was as I said a great night, beautiful weather and fantastic conversations.

A Brief History of Christmas

November 2017 Christmas is celebrated as the birthday of Jesus although there is no evidence he was born on that day. It was declared his birthday in 440 AD. In England Christmas was originally called Yule. The old Saxon word Yule meant mid-winter. However when the Saxons were converted to Christianity the word Yule came to mean Jesus’ birthday. The word Christmas (Christ mass) was not used until the 11th century. For most of history Christmas was just one of many festivals celebrated throughout the

year. Until the 19th century Christmas was not particularly important in England. Most of the things that make up a ‘traditional’ English Christmas were actually invented (or imported into England from other countries) in the 19th century. That includes Christmas trees, Christmas cards, Christmas crackers, paper decorations and, of course, Father Christmas or Santa Claus with his white beard and red costume. During the 17th century and 18th century people continued to celebrate Christmas as they had done for centuries. For centuries it was traditional to burn a Yule log in the replace at Christmas. In the 19th century it was also common to light a large Yule candle. Boxing Day was originally a day when alms-boxes in churches were opened and the money was distributed to the poor. Later ‘boxes’ were given to servants. Our modern Christmas really began in the 19th century. Long before the 19th century people in England decorated their houses at Christmas with holly, ivy and mistletoe. In the 19th century people began to use coloured paper decorations. For centuries it was common to give Christmas gifts to friends and relatives at Christmas. However hanging out

Page 10: The Cowra Crankhandle - WordPress.com · 2017-12-12 · Page Cowra Crankhandle 4 Pre - 1950s Australian Automotive History The car can be traced back as far as the 17th Century, although

Cowra Crankhandle Page 10

Queen Victoria’s family with Christmas tree stockings to be filled with presents was first recorded in parts of England in the early 19th century. It became common in the late 19th century. Christmas cards were invented in the 19th century. The first one was designed in 1843 by John Horsley. Before 1840 it would not have been feasible for ordinary people to send cards because of the cost of postage. However Rowland Hill introduced the penny post in 1840. By the 1860s Christmas cards were very popular in England. Christmas crackers were invented in 1847 by a confectioner named Tom Smith. While in Paris he saw sugar

almonds sold wrapped in tissue paper and he invented the Christmas cracker. He added mottoes to the sweets (later these evolved into jokes). Smith added the ‘bang’ in 1860. Little gifts were also added to Christmas crackers. Christmas trees were used in Central Europe from the Middle Ages. By the 16th century they were decorated. By the 17th century tinsel was used. Other

Christmas ornaments included paper flowers, candles, barley sugar, gingerbread and wax shapes. The first Christmas trees in England appeared in the early 19th century but they did not become popular till Queen Victoria married a German,

Prince Albert. In 1848 they were shown in a picture in the Illustrated London News with a Christmas tree. As a result Christmas trees became very popular. Electric Christmas tree lights were invented in 1882 by Edward H. Johnson. Father Christmas and Santa Claus were originally two different figures. In England Father Christmas was a man dressed in green (representing the return of Spring) who was supposed to visit families and feast with them at Christmas. (He did not bring gifts). However in the 19th century in England Father Christmas merged with the Dutch Santa Claus. He is supposed to be based on St Nicholas a Christian bishop who lived in Turkey in the 4th century AD. According to tradition St Nicholas gave

generous gifts to the poor. St Nicholas had a feast day on 6 December. (In Poland Santa still brings gifts on 6 December). On that day it was traditional to give gifts or to give to charity to remember the saint’s generosity. The Dutch took the tradition of ‘Sinterklaas’ to America. In time Santa Claus evolved into a figure who brings gifts to sleeping children at Christmas. The modern Santa Claus or Father Christmas was invented in 1862 by a German-American artist called Thomas Nast. In the late 1860s Santa Claus was

imported into England. Mince pies have been eaten at Christmas in England since the 16th Century. Originally they were made of minced meat but in the 19th century the meat was replaced with dried fruit and spices. Originally people ate a cake on Twelfth Night (6 January). In the late 19th century people began to eat the traditional Twelfth Night cake at Christmas. So a Victorian Christmas contained all the elements of a ‘traditional’ Christmas such as Santa Clause, Christmas trees, Christmas crackers, Christmas Cards, Christmas cake and pudding. Today Christmas is still celebrated on 7 January in Ethiopia. The Russian Orthodox Church also celebrates Christmas on 7 January Reprinted from NURUNGI Newsletter – Concord Historical Society Tim Lambert. http://www.localhistories.org/

Croote Cottage Gooloogong 10th December

Well and truly worth the wait, Croote Cottage is a must see. Convict built with bushranger Ben Hall history. There was so much to see and so little time we had today to see everything, a huge thankyou to Maryanne Dowd, and such a gracious lady.

Not only did we have a look through the cottage, allowed to pick some cuttings (mainly for the stations

garden), but also for personal planting, then over to her home to look at her 1947 Pontiac. The Pontiac alone was well and truly worth the visit. 74,000 original miles on an original motor car, despite a flat battery and a slight water leak possibly through wiper, the car is near perfect. We have already discussed going back to Croote for a more leisurely look and a picnic in the gardens. Plenty of shade, seating and very pretty, perfect spot for a picnic.

The house has a hidden underground room that had a bed over the door. This room was built to protect women and children from the natives. In later years it was used for protection again for women and children from bushrangers. To me I found that quite an unusual as I have always been under the impressions that the natives were relatively friendly unless treated badly.

It took the club 25 years to visit Croote Cottage, the first time the Edna Dowd did not allow children and as the club was full of young children the president canned the run. Over the years we have tried to fit Croote Cottage into the calendar, always failing due to other commitments or other reasons. For a good few years I have had Maryanne’s phone number on my iPhone for two reasons, the Pontiac on club plates and a visit to Croote Cottage.

The biggest Gooloogong Markets ever were also on today and we had arranged the pub for lunch. All in all it was a busy run, great company and a Merv Seymour “feel good day” according to Ray Heilman, and I agree, it was fantastic from start to finish. IN GENERAL 1. Never take an open stubby to a job interview. 2. Always identify people in your paddocks before shooting at them. 3. It's tacky to take an Esky to church. 4. If you have to vacuum the bed, it's time to change the sheets. 5. Even if you're certain you're included in the will, it's rude to take your ute and trailer to the funeral. DINING OUT 1. When decanting wine from the box, tilt the paper cup and pour slowly so as not to bruise the wine. 2. If drinking directly from the bottle, hold it with only one hand. ENTERTAINING IN YOUR HOME 1. A centrepiece for the table should never be anything prepared by a taxidermist. 2. Don't allow the dog to eat at the table, no matter how good his manners. PERSONAL HYGIENE 1. While ears need to be cleaned regularly, this should be done in private, using one's OWN ute keys. 2. Even if you live alone, deodorant isn't a waste of money. 3. Extensive use of deodorant can only delay bathing by a few days. 4. Dirt and grease under the fingernails is a no-no, it alters the taste of finger foods and if you are a woman it can draw attention away from your jewellery. DATING 1. Always offer to bait your date's hook – especially on the first date.

2. Be assertive. Let her know you're interested: 'I've been wanting to go out with you ever since I read that stuff about you on the dunny door two years ago.' 3. Establish with her parents what time she's expected back. Some will say 11:00 PM , others might say 'Monday.' If the latter is the answer, it's the man's responsibility to get her to school on time.. THEATRE/CINEMA ETIQUETTE 1. Crying babies should be taken to the lobby and picked up after the movie ends. 2. Refrain from yelling abuse at characters on the screen. Tests have proven they can't hear you. WEDDINGS 1. Livestock is a poor choice for a wedding gift. 2. Kissing the bride for more than five seconds may cause a drop in your popularity. (Excessive use of the tongue is also considered out of place) 3. For the groom, at least, rent a tux. A tracksuit with a cummer-bund and a clean football jumper can create a tacky appearance. 4. Though uncomfortable, say 'yes' to socks and shoes for the occasion.

Jokes A dwarf goes to a very good but very busy doctor and asks: "I know you are busy but do you treat dwarves?" The doctor replies: "Yes but you will have to be a little patient". In hindsight I should have posted my Facebook status as: "I've blown the head gasket on my 1997 XR3i" rather than "I've just buggered a 14 year old escort". The police still haven't seen the funny side, my lap top's been confiscated and the wife has gone off to her mother. A Yorkshire man takes his cat to the vet. Yorkshireman: "Ayup, lad, I need to talk to thee about me cat." Vet: "Is it a tom?" Yorkshireman: "Nay, I've browt it with us." A Yorkshireman's dog dies and as it was a favourite pet he decides to have a gold statue made by a jeweller to remember the dog by. Yorkshireman: "Can tha mek us a gold statue of yon dog?" Jeweller: "Do you want it 18 carat?" Yorkshireman: "No I want it chewin' a bone yer daft bugger!" Bloke from Barnsley with piles asks chemist: "Nah then lad, does tha sell arse cream?" Chemist replies: "Aye, Magnum or Cornetto?" Submitted by Maurice Randell
