It is unusual for a little Black girl from Gulfport, Mississippi to grow up to become the highest-ranking Democrat in Georgia and then run for governor of her state. My parents made tremendous sacrifices to give my siblings and me a chance to defy the odds. Despite growing up in poverty in the segregated South, because of sheer force of will they raised two Ph.D.’s, a social worker, and a federal judge.

Not everyone can do the same alone. As a community, we must take huge leaps and fight with all our might to achieve success for every single family in our state. That’s why I’m running for governor, and our campaign is building an unusual — and extraordinary — statewide organizing program that depends on your grassroots support.

My whole life has been a story of imagining more for myself than what others expected of me. This campaign is about talking to voters who have been left out or left behind, so that we can come together and demand better opportunities for ourselves. It is about forging new paths and doing things differently. It is about believing that our capacity to succeed — and not just survive — is limitless if we fight for every Georgian the way my parents fought for me.

The fact that we are living in strange times in America is not lost on me. There has never been a more important moment for bold thinking.

I am grateful for the opportunity to share my story with you. Thank you for listening, and I hope you will join our movement. It will take all of us working together to move Georgia, and our nation, forward.
