Baptism in the Sea

•At the time of our story today, God’s destruction of Egypt was almost complete.

•He has just finished the 10th of the Egyptian plagues.

• The destruction of the firstborn by the death angel was all that Pharaoh and the Egyptians could take

• The Egyptians expelled the Israelites from Egypt

•But the Wickedness of Pharaoh was soon demonstrated again

Baptism in the Sea

Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of livestock.

30 So Pharaoh rose in the night, he, all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was not a house where there was not one dead.

Baptism in the Sea

31 Then he called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, "Rise, go out from among my people, both you and the children of Israel. And go, serve the LORD as you have said.

32 "Also take your flocks and your herds, as you have said, and be gone; and bless me also."

33 And the Egyptians urged the people, that they might send them out of the land in haste. For they said, "We shall all be dead."

34 So the people took their dough before it was leavened, having their kneading bowls bound up in their clothes on their shoulders.

35 Now the children of Israel had done according to the word of Moses, and they had asked from the Egyptians articles of silver, articles of gold, and clothing.

36 And the LORD had given the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they granted them what they requested. Thus they plundered the Egyptians.

Baptism in the Sea

•37 Then the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides children.

• 38 A mixed multitude went up with them also, and flocks and herds-a great deal of livestock.

• 39 And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they had brought out of Egypt; for it was not leavened, because they were driven out of Egypt and could not wait, nor had they prepared provisions for themselves.

•40 Now the sojourn of the children of Israel who lived in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years.

• 41 And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years-on that very same day-it came to pass that all the armies of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt.

Baptism in the Sea

• Interesting Points in These Verses• The Plague itself: Death of the Firstborn• They plundered the Egyptians: The Egyptians gave them

articles of gold and silver and clothing•600,000 men on foot left Egypt•Probably about the same amount of women•Probably about the same amount or more of children• Leaves us with a number of around 2,000,000 people

who came up out of Egypt

Baptism in the Sea

• Interesting Points in these verses• They left Egypt in such a hurry, there was no time

for their bread to rise.• They baked unleavened cakes because they were

driven out of Egypt• The “Feast of Unleavened Bread” was a memorial

for this time in Israel’s history and was instituted by God in Ex 12:15

Baptism in the Sea

• The “Feast of Unleavened Bread” even has implications today

• It was during this feast that Jesus instituted the “Lords Supper” so we know the bread they were using was unleavened bread• Mt 26:17 Now on the first day of the Feast of the

Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, "Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?“

Page 7: The crossing of the red sea · 3 Baptism in the Sea Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh

7

Baptism in the Sea

• Mt 26:26 ¶ And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is My body.”

• Jesus used unleavened bread when He instituted the Lord’s Supper.

• If we are going to follow the example set for us by Christ then we will use unleavened bread when we partake of the Lord’s Supper today

Baptism in the Sea

• Israel begins their journey out of Egypt being led by God with a Pillar of Cloud during the day and a Pillar of Fire at night

•However, Pharaoh once again changes his mind about letting the people go and begins to pursue them.

•He believes the Israelites have become lost in the wilderness• Ex 14:3 'They are bewildered by the land; the

wilderness has closed them in.'

Baptism in the Sea

5 Now it was told the king of Egypt that the people had fled, and the heart of Pharaoh and his servants was turned against the people; and they said, "Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us?"

6 So he made ready his chariot and took his people with him.

7 Also, he took six hundred choice chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt with captains over every one of them.

Page 9: The crossing of the red sea · 3 Baptism in the Sea Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh

Baptism in the Sea

8 And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued the children of Israel; and the children of Israel went out with boldness.

9 So the Egyptians pursued them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen and his army, and overtook them camping by the sea beside Pi Hahiroth, before Baal Zephon.

Baptism in the Sea

10 ¶ And when Pharaoh drew near, the children of Israel lifted their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians marched after them. So they were very afraid, and the children of Israel cried out to the LORD.

11 Then they said to Moses, "Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you so dealt with us, to bring us up out of Egypt?

Page 10: The crossing of the red sea · 3 Baptism in the Sea Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh

10

Baptism in the Sea

12 "Is this not the word that we told you in Egypt, saying, 'Let us alone that we may serve the Egyptians?' For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than that we should die in the wilderness."

13 And Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever.

Baptism in the Sea

14 "The LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace."

15 ¶ And the LORD said to Moses, "Why do you cry to Me? Tell the children of Israel to go forward.

16 "But lift up your rod, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it. And the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.

Page 11: The crossing of the red sea · 3 Baptism in the Sea Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh

Baptism in the Sea

17 "And I indeed will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them. So I will gain honor over Pharaoh and over all his army, his chariots, and his horsemen.

18 "Then the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I have gained honor for Myself over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen."

19 And the Angel of God, who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud went from before them and stood behind them.

Baptism in the Sea

20 So it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. Thus it was a cloud and darkness to the one, and it gave light by night to the other, so that the one did not come near the other all that night.

21 ¶ Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea into dry land, and the waters were divided.

Page 12: The crossing of the red sea · 3 Baptism in the Sea Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh

12

Baptism in the Sea

22 So the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea on the dry ground, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.

23 And the Egyptians pursued and went after them into the midst of the sea, all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.

24 Now it came to pass, in the morning watch, that the LORD looked down upon the army of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and cloud, and He troubled the army of the Egyptians.

Baptism in the Sea

• 25 And He took off their chariot wheels, so that they drove them with difficulty; and the Egyptians said, "Let us flee from the face of Israel, for the LORD fights for them against the Egyptians."

• 26 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the waters may come back upon the Egyptians, on their chariots, and on their horsemen."

Page 13: The crossing of the red sea · 3 Baptism in the Sea Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh

13

Baptism in the Sea

•27 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and when the morning appeared, the sea returned to its full depth, while the Egyptians were fleeing into it. So the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.

• 28 Then the waters returned and covered the chariots, the horsemen, and all the army of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them. Not so much as one of them remained.

Baptism in the Sea

Ex 14:29 But the children of Israel had walked on dry land in the midst of the sea, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.

30 So the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.

31 Thus Israel saw the great work which the LORD had done in Egypt; so the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD and His servant Moses.

• Even Pharaoh himself was drowned in the Red Sea•Ps 136:13 To Him who divided the Red Sea in two,

15

Baptism in the Sea

•What an amazing demonstration of the power of our God!

• Israel was in a hopeless situation on their own.

• The sea was in front of them and Pharaoh’s army was behind them.

• They had no where to go!

•But, God helped them when they could not help themselves.

Baptism in the Sea

•He provided a way of escape that no one could have expected.

•When they came out on the other side of the Red Sea they no longer had to worry about Pharaoh and his army.

• Those who held God’s people captive had been left in the sea.

Page 16: The crossing of the red sea · 3 Baptism in the Sea Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh

16

Baptism in the Sea

• The Bible is full of what we sometimes call Types and Antitypes.

•A “Type” bears a resemblance to something better to come which is the “Antitype”

•Generally we see Types in the Old Testament and their better “Antitypes” in the New.

•Peter uses the flood and baptism as an example of Types and Antitypes.

Baptism in the Sea

•1Pe 3:20 who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.

• 21 ¶ There is also an antitype which now saves us--baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

Page 17: The crossing of the red sea · 3 Baptism in the Sea Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh

6/5/2017

17

Baptism in the Sea

• Those 8 people being saved physically by the flood waters is the Old Testament type.

• The better antitype, is our spiritual salvation by the waters of baptism.

•Another word the Bible uses for “Type” is “Shadow”

• The writer of Hebrews says the sacrifices under the Law of Moses were a shadow of the sacrifice made by Christ.

Baptism in the Sea

•Hebrews 10:1 ¶ For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect.

• 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins.

Page 18: The crossing of the red sea · 3 Baptism in the Sea Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh

6/5/2017

18

Baptism in the Sea

• 3 But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year.

• 4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

• These sacrifices had to be offered over and over again because they could not forgive sins.

• The sacrifice of Christ is the better antitype of this because it can forgive sins and only had to be offered once!

Baptism in the Sea

•Hebrews 10:11 And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.

• 12 But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God,

• The sacrifices of the old testament were only a shadow of or similar to the much better sacrifice of Christ.

Page 19: The crossing of the red sea · 3 Baptism in the Sea Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh

6/5/2017

19

Baptism in the Sea

•Hopefully that gives us pretty good idea of what a type and antitype are.

•Now we want to spend a few minutes looking at the type contained in the story of the Israelites crossing of the Red Sea.

• The first thing we will notice is that the Israelites crossing the Red Sea is a type of New Testament baptism.

Baptism in the Sea

•1Co 10:1 ¶ Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea,

• 2 all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea,

• The baptism of the Israelites in the Red Sea is a type of the better baptism under the Law of Christ in a few different ways.

Page 20: The crossing of the red sea · 3 Baptism in the Sea Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh

6/5/2017

20

Baptism in the Sea

• The Israelites before their baptism were the physical slaves of the Egyptians.

• Listen to how terrible their servitude to these Egyptians was.

• Ex 1:8 ¶ Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.

• 9 And he said to his people, "Look, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we;

Baptism in the Sea

• 10 "come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and it happen, in the event of war, that they also join our enemies and fight against us, and so go up out of the land."

• 11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh supply cities, Pithom and Raamses.

• 12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were in dread of the children of Israel.

Page 21: The crossing of the red sea · 3 Baptism in the Sea Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh

6/5/2017

21

Baptism in the Sea

• 13 So the Egyptians made the children of Israel serve with rigor.

• 14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage-in mortar, in brick, and in all manner of service in the field. All their service in which they made them serve was with rigor.

• Similar to the Israelites we too are in bondage before baptism.

Baptism in the Sea

•Our bondage or slavery is not physical but spiritual in nature.

•We are slaves to sin before we submit to the baptism of Christ.

• The cruelty of satan and sin is unmatched!

•Ro 6:16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one's slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?

Page 22: The crossing of the red sea · 3 Baptism in the Sea Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh

6/5/2017

22

Baptism in the Sea

• 17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.

• 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.

•When are we set free from sin?

•When we obey that form of doctrine.

Baptism in the Sea

•What is that form of doctrine Paul is talking about?

• It is when we do symbolically what Christ did in reality.

•Ro 6:3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?

• 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Page 23: The crossing of the red sea · 3 Baptism in the Sea Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh

6/5/2017

23

Baptism in the Sea

• 5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,

• 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.

• If we have never obeyed that form of doctrine then we are still slaves of sin!

Baptism in the Sea

• Just like the Israelites would have still been the slaves of the Egyptians had they decided not to cross the Red Sea.

•Prior to their baptism in the Red Sea the Israelites were in a hopeless situation.

• They had come to a dead end. The Red Sea was ahead of them and they had no way of getting across.

• The Egyptian army was behind them and they had no way of defeating them.

Page 24: The crossing of the red sea · 3 Baptism in the Sea Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh

6/5/2017

24

Baptism in the Sea

•Only God could deliver them!

• Likewise we are in a hopeless situation before baptism

•We are spiritually dead with no hope for eternal life ahead of us.

• Satan and his army is behind us doing his best to destroy us and we had no way of defeating him by ourselves.

•Only God can save us!

Baptism in the Sea

•Acts 4:10 "let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole.

• 11 "This is the 'stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.'

• 12 "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."

Page 25: The crossing of the red sea · 3 Baptism in the Sea Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh

6/5/2017

25

Baptism in the Sea

• It is only thru obedience to the commands of Christ that we can be saved.

•Mr 16:16 "He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.

•Without His help we are completely helpless to save ourselves.

•Ro 5:6 ¶ For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

Baptism in the Sea

• The Israelites were not saved from the Egyptians until they came up out of their baptism in the Red Sea.

•Remember what happened after the Israelites came out of the sea?

•26 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the waters may come back upon the Egyptians, on their chariots, and on their horsemen."

Page 26: The crossing of the red sea · 3 Baptism in the Sea Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh

6/5/2017

26

Baptism in the Sea

•27 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and when the morning appeared, the sea returned to its full depth, while the Egyptians were fleeing into it. So the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.

• 28 Then the waters returned and covered the chariots, the horsemen, and all the army of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them. Not so much as one of them remained.

Baptism in the Sea

29 But the children of Israel had walked on dry land in the midst of the sea, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.

30 So the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.

When did it say the Lord saved Israel? That day!

The day the Egyptians were drowned in the sea.

Page 27: The crossing of the red sea · 3 Baptism in the Sea Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh

6/5/2017

27

Baptism in the Sea

• Similarly we are not saved from our sins until we are baptized.

• Just like the Egyptians were washed away in the sea, our sins are washed away in baptism.

•Ac 2:38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Baptism in the Sea

• It is at the point of baptism that our sins are forgiven, not before!

•Do we remember what Ananias told Saul of Tarsus (the Apostle Paul) he needed to do?

•Ac 22:16 'And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’

• Saul after seeing the Lord on the road to Damascus, fasting and praying for 3 days and nights still had his sins.

Page 28: The crossing of the red sea · 3 Baptism in the Sea Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh

6/5/2017

28

Baptism in the Sea

•Were the Israelites saved from the Egyptians before or after being baptized in the Red Sea? After!

• Similarly it is not until after we are baptized that we are saved from our sins.

• Finally we will notice that just because they were baptized in the Red Sea did not mean they were going to make it into the promised land.

•Because of disbelief at Kadesh Barnea God sentenced all of those 20 years old and up to die in the wilderness.

Baptism in the Sea

• Jude 1:5 But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.

• Similarly, just because we have been baptized and our sins forgiven does not mean that we will make it into our promised land of Heaven.

•Once we are saved does not mean we will always be saved!

Page 29: The crossing of the red sea · 3 Baptism in the Sea Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh

29

Baptism in the Sea

• The writer of Hebrews uses these Israelites as an example for us today

•Heb 3:10 Therefore I was angry with that generation, And said, 'They always go astray in their heart, And they have not known My ways.'

• 11 So I swore in My wrath, 'They shall not enter My rest.

• 12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God;

Baptism in the Sea

•Heb 3:13 but exhort one another daily, while it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

• 14 For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end,

• If we fail to remain faithful to the end then we will not be saved.

Page 30: The crossing of the red sea · 3 Baptism in the Sea Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh

30

Baptism in the Sea

• Listen to what Peter says can be the effect of false teachers.

•2Pe 2:18 For when they speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who have actually escaped from those who live in error.

• 19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage.

Baptism in the Sea

• 20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning.

• 21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them.

Page 31: The crossing of the red sea · 3 Baptism in the Sea Ex 12:29 And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh

31

Conclusion

• 22 But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: "A dog returns to his own vomit," and, "a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire.“

•What a shame it will be for those who have once been Christians.

•Who have known the Word of God but rejected it.

• To throw away the precious salvation they once had because they loved this world more than they loved God!
