Early Release Day
We’d like to remind you that Friday, February 13th is an Early Release day. There will be no afternoon classes for students. On
this Early Release day, the staff will participate in professional development to enhance student learning.
Dismissal for all Kindergarten to Grade 8 “walk in” students or those being picked up by parents/designated adults will be
dismissed at the end of period three – 12:00 p.m.
If you are picking up your kindergarten child, please do so in the front courtyard area.
Grade 1 – 8 students will meet you at the back door near the gym.
Bussed students will be transported home at approximately 12:05 p.m., and can be expected to return home approximately 3 - 3
1/2 hours earlier than usual.
We understand that on early release days there is often a need for alternate pick up arrangements (i.e., with a grandparent,
babysitter, friend, walking, bicycle, etc.). We ask that if your son/daughter will be traveling home on Friday in an alternate
manner, please communicate this to us via telephone or a note to the teacher.
We appreciate your ongoing support and flexibility.
O’Canada

Parliament, District School Board of Niagara staff, a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, the
Citizenship Judge, and our staff and students.
This ceremony is an opportunity for our students to celebrate their patriotism and learn about
the journey to citizenship. Students are asked to wear red and white to show their Canadian
spirit. Family members and members of the community are encouraged to join us to watch this

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT
INCLEMENT WEATHER PROCEDURES There may be times during the school year where inclement weather or other situations could cause transportation cancellations or school closures. At times when student transportation has been cancelled and schools remain open, the decision of whether or not to have children in school on that day rests with the parent or guardian. Should you decide not to send your child to school in the event that transportation is cancelled but schools remain open, or if your child is ill or late, please ensure that you call your child’s school to inform them of your child’s absence. A key resource in any emergency is the DSBN Emergency Information form that you filled out at the beginning of the school year. Please let the school know of any changes in contact information or procedures you wish to be followed throughout the school year. For secondary schools it may become necessary to cancel late buses. Notice will be provided via school announcements and on the websites and subscription features by 11:30 a.m. Information about transportation cancellations and school closures will be available as soon as it is available through the following channels: Websites: http://www.dsbn.org/inclementweather/ www.nsts.ca Subscription Features: DSBN Facebook or Twitter NSTS Transportation Delay or Cancellation Alerts Phone: Niagara Student Transportation Services 905-346-0290 Voice Auto Attendant Radio Stations:

Philosophia Naturalis
We are entering interesting times in the world of science. Discoveries are being made and we find ourselves questioning what we know and how this knowledge affects our daily lives. One thing will not change is the importance of developing science process skills. Did you know these skills are being developed from the time students enter kindergarten to the time they graduate high school?
To support science process skill development at Crossroads School, I (Ms. Ho) have created a Smarter Science board where students from grades 4 to 8 are invited to try a science activity. There is a Smarter Science framework poster that highlights the skills being used in the weekly science process skill challenge.
Students who complete the activity sheet are invited to see me (Ms. Ho) and discuss what they have learned during the first nutrition and fitness break every Tuesday and Thursday morning. The purpose is to develop curiosity and encourage the wonderment science has to offer.
