A FRESH COAT OF PAINT FOR THE RECTORY
The Yearly Bucket List Oath:
I solemnly swear to create memories that last a lifetime.
I vow to make an impression on the world, not the couch.
I promise to dream about unrealistic goals.
And make them my reality. - Anonymous
Dear Friends,
Many of us have thoughts about our own, personal bucket lists. Whether we have put pen to paper or have simply
housed a mental list. It is a wonderful thing to be able to check them off – as I recently was able to do, having
achieved a few of my own while on Sabbatical. And as I get up (earlier than usual) every morning to spend an hour
working on my Spanish, I am hoping to “√ ” it off my list…..just in time for one another item – but this one, from
our Parish Bucket List.
What am I talking about? In our recent parish conversations we shared with one another the many dreams and hopes
we have for Christ Church – what could be called “The Christ Church Bucket List”.
Some of the aspirations were of little surprise. I had in fact thought of them myself. But I was totally surprised by
some of your wonderful desires and the vision of what we together can be.
Someone mentioned hosting foreign exchange students. We included that in the brochure “Make Us Instruments of
Your Blessing”, but I really didn’t think there was much chance in anything materializing along those lines. Was I
surprised! Days after finishing the brochure I received a call from an organization wanting to place a high school
student with one of our families – and voila! Peggy James and John Callaghan will be welcoming a Chinese young
man into their home this August. Be careful what you pray for – or what you put on that bucket list!
Someone else mentioned the parish should go on a mission trip. “Well”, I thought to myself, “If someone has the
time and inclination to do all the planning and work that needs to go into something like that…” You can see I am
sometimes lacking in the FAITH department – but I did make sure that “Mission Trips” went into the Brochure.
Shortly thereafter – yes, you guessed it! – I got an email informing me that the Monmouth Convocation is going on a
Mission Trip to the Dominican Republic next April – and you are all invited! Isn’t it amazing what God does when
we simply put it out there? And how wonderfully it fits in with my own Bucket List item of becoming fluent in
Spanish. I am sending in my deposit this week (there is information on the trip elsewhere in this newsletter; do take a
look and send in yours, too) and now I am even more determined than ever to keep at the Spanish so I can take a stab
at preaching when we land in the Dominican Republic next April.
Many of you mentioned wanting our Church to be known as a place of Sanctuary. Opening our doors to the
community around us, perhaps offering ESL classes (English as a Second Language) and exploring what we might
do to respond to the current refugee crisis. You may not be able to guess what has happened in the meantime (I know
I was not able to do so): I got an email from a cleric who I had met in Ecuador in February. While I was there, I had
told him and his wife that if they ever made it to the States to look me up (I tell this to folks wherever I travel). His
email told me that they were on their way to New Jersey. On July 12th I met them at the Little Silver Train Station
and spent the day showing them the churches of Monmouth County and talking about the possibility of them doing
ministry in this part of the State. Before his ordination José was a community activist and organizer and Mercedes is
a social worker, and of course both fluent in Spanish; the perfect résumés to tackle so many of our dreams! I am now
seeing our Parish Bucket List with a set of new eyes; who knows what God will do among us next?
So: this has been my summer so far. It is proving to be a time of renewed dreams and of collecting a vision for what
will come next. I invite you to share with me and the congregation what you have been thinking, praying, working
on during the summer. Look through the Brochure you recently received in the mail; are you finding it a reality?
Have ideas of how we can “√” off one more item?
It is a wonderful thing to dream. It is better to find a dream take shape in reality. And best of all is to do so with the
Community of Faith, with God’s help.
Peace,
Mother Lisa+
P.S. I just got off the phone with Dave Cassidy who told me he is on his way to Canada to work on a documentary
about refugee families. I asked him to see if there may be a possibility for us to partner in the support and care of that
work. Cross your fingers and say your prayers; God is certainly at work!

Christ Church to Host
Christian Educators Luncheon
Christian Educators from local Episcopal Churches
are invited to a luncheon on Saturday, August 5th
from 11:00am to 1:00pm. This includes children,
youth and adults. Besides enjoying one another’s
company, we would like everyone to bring in
samples of what curriculum you are using. We
encourage you to share how your program is shaped
and any interesting ideas you may have. Here at
Christ Church, we invite anyone who is interested
in our Christian Education Programs to join us.
RSVP at the Church Office (phone or email) by
August 3rd.
Monmouth Convocation Meeting A lot has been going in the Diocese of New Jersey!
We are considering who we are and what kind of
ministry we want for the future. Have you ever
wondered: Just what is the role of the Diocese?
Who are they, exactly, and what is our relationship
to the Diocese? We are all invited to a special
Convocation Meeting On August 24th at St. Uriel’s,
Seagirt, at 7:00pm. If you would like to go, there
will be carpooling, leaving from the Christ Church
Parking Lot at 6:30pm. Contact the Church Office
to let Mother Lisa know if you would like go with
us.

We return to our FALL service schedule on
September 10.
Mission Trip: Dominican Republic
The Mission Trip to the Dominican Republic is set
for the week of April 10-17, 2018. It is now time to
make a commitment to the trip. The total cost for
the 8-day trip will be $1800. This will include your
airfare, transportation, lodging, food, and cost for
daily supplies for the work project.
The initial deposit of $500 is due by Friday
September 1, 2017. Please submit to Christ Church

Make the check out to "Christ Church." In the
memo area, please put "DR Mission Trip." A
schedule for the rest of the payments will be set up.
We will have a meeting in the fall to discuss details
of this trip and to decide on a work project. Charlie
Nakash, who has been sent to work in the DR from
the Diocese of New Jersey, will work closely with
us on the project. We also will have ample
opportunities to interact with the children and adults
of the DR.
If you have any questions, contact Mother Lisa at
the Church Office.
Second Saturday Workday
Please mark your calendar for the next workday that
will be held on Saturday September 9th, 10:00 AM
to 4:00 PM (rain or shine). Much of the summer
growth and unwanted weeds need attention. In
general there is always more to be done then
helping hands taking part. Most tasks can be
handled by any age group or skill level. This is a
good opportunity for those who need community
service credit. Your help for an hour or two will be
greatly appreciated. My cooking skills are basic, but
a hot lunch will be provided. Walter Dein

Convent Kiosk A VERY Special Event – Don’t Miss it!
Tuesday, August 15 at 7:00pm
Christ Church Parish House
Dear parishioners of Christ Church,
We are delighted to invite you to see and purchase
handmade religious articles such as icons, crosses,
and embroidered and ceramic gifts, made by the
Sisters of St. Elisabeth Convent (Orthodox Diocese
of Minsk, Belarus).
The exposition will take place on Tuesday,
August 15 at 7:00pm at the Parish House.
Sister Alena, who is making her first trip to the
USA will be here to talk about the work the Sisters
do and to share their handiwork. Light fare will be
served. Please read more about them below:
Dear Parishioners of Christ Church,
The Sisterhood of Saint Elisabeth was founded in
1996. For more than 15 years our sisters have been
rendering spiritual, social and financial support to
the sick and the suffering at the National Psychiatric
Clinic, a boarding home for children with special
needs and mentally challenged adults, as well as a
TB Clinic.
In recent years a rehabilitation center for the
homeless, drug and alcohol addicts, and ex-
prisoners was established 20 miles away from the
Convent. About 200 residents live here today. Many
lost and struggling people get a chance to tackle
their problems and start a new life with God.
A rehabilitation facility for females was established
in 2012. Women released from jail, the homeless
and mentally challenged women stay there. Today
there are 11 women and one toddler at this
farmstead.
To help these people, workshops were established
on the grounds of the Convent. Many of these sick
people have a possibility to express themselves in
art for God, working together with the nuns and
sisters and making beautiful articles (hand painted
icons crosses, crucifixes, woodcarving, embroidered
and ceramic gifts, vestments).
All these goods are made with love and prayer and
bring blessing to home. You will support many
people in need by purchasing items of devotions for
yourselves and your beloved ones
With deep gratitude and love in Christ,
Sisters of St. Elisabeth
Offering souvenirs and church supplies made in their Convent. All proceeds will go to support facilities for children and adults with special needs as well as a rehabilitation center for drug and alcohol addicts run by St. Elisabeth Convent

Backpacks for a Smooth
Start to School
Now is a great time to think about the children in
Monmouth County who will need supplies when
they go back to school in September.
Once again this year, we will help children here in
Monmouth County begin the school year with
needed materials and supplies by participating in
our backpack program. There are children who
come to school without the needed supplies such as
pencils and notebooks, delaying or impeding their
fresh start to the new school year. We hope to make
a difference for some of these children. Please
consider providing a child with some needed
supplies such as:
Sturdy backpack, pencils, pens, crayons,
markers, colored pencils, highlighters, zippered
pencil case, spiral notebooks (no binders),
homework notebooks, child scissors, glue sticks,
marble notebooks, erasers, and other young
child specific supplies. The target grade levels are 1
st to 5
th grades.
Please bring the backpacks or supplies to church
any day before Sunday, September 17th, when
they will be blessed and delivered to the school
guidance counselor during that first week of school.
Please help us help some children again this year.
Your generosity is appreciated.
Elaine Feyereisen
*We have had a number of backpacks donated.
If you see an empty one in the Narthex, take one
home, fill it with supplies and return it!
Holiday Bazaar
2017 August is here and time is going by so fast! The
Dog Days of Summer will soon be over and many
people will be preparing for Fall Events. We are
on our way with the Christmas Bazaar. Sounds
funny as you think it is so far away.
Many returning as well as new volunteers attended
our first meeting for this year’s Christmas Bazaar.
Having the Bazaar back to the first full weekend in
December with the Lantern Tour is exciting but
comes with a few necessary changes. The Bazaar
will be held two days: Friday, December 1st from 5
to 9 pm and Saturday the 2nd from 9 am to 3 pm.
All the treasured events such as the Gift Baskets,
Bake Shop, Poinsettias, Wreaths, Knitting Pearls,
Calendar Games, Moravian Pies, Quiche, 50/50,
Trinkets & Treasures, Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe,
Books and concessions, will be back better than
ever!
We have two Chairs that after many years have
decided to step down. They will continue to help in
a different capacity. We have three* positions
available: *Gift Baskets and *Friday and *Saturday
Kitchen. Colleen and Mark Roth volunteered at the
meeting for Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe and we are
thrilled to have them join our Christmas Bazaar
Team! Stacy Reagan also volunteered to help in the
kitchen (while her daughter, Cassie, is an Angel in
the Church Lantern Tour).
Do you love to cook? Can you help or Chair the
Kitchen either Friday or Saturday (or both)? If
so, we need you!
Do you like to solicit community business for
Gift Baskets? Come join our Team, we more
than need you!
Can you make a basket or donate items for use
in a basket? Please think about it, we need your
talent!
Do you like to knit or crochet? Knitting Pearls
could use your help!
Are you a crafter? We are adding a craft table
to the Bazaar. Every Monday in August from
9am to 2:30pm, crafts will be done in the Parish
House. Perhaps you are interested in an evening
craft program. Let us know. Or pick up a craft
after service and take it home to do.
Volunteers are needed for our Ad Journal Patron
Table, one for each of the 8 and 10 o’clock services.
Come join us at our next meeting on August 27
following the 9 o’clock service!
Want to learn more or have questions? Please
text me (can’t hear on the phone) at 732-861-0249
or email [email protected] or ask to speak with
someone from the Bazaar Team, we all will be
happy to talk with you.
Have a wonder August, enjoy and stay well,
Judi Buncher.

CHRIST CHURCH CELEBRATES INDEPENDENCE DAY
On July 4
th, the parish joined the Monmouth County
Historical Association and many Shrewsbury
residents in commemorating the nation’s founding.
The day began with a reading of the Declaration of
Independence at the Allen house where Mother Lisa
provided an invocation. Subsequently attendees
were invited to cross the street to the Church to
view the Vinegar Bible and to be entertained by
performances by members of the Dead Actors’
Guild. Bob Kelly described the various special
features of the Vinegar Bible to about 70 visitors.
Jamie Green portrayed William Leeds and Robert
Maber did the same for Louis Casimir DeCoppet.
Stuart and Judi Buncher also participated in
costume.
“Did You Know …?”
Stories of Christ Church History
by: Robert M. Kelly, Jr.
Parish Historian
“Did You Know … ?”
That the Vinegar Bible is a focus of our historical
activities this year? This is entirely appropriate with
it being the 300th
anniversary of its printing in
Oxford, England by John Baskett. The highlight of
this celebration is the combined musical and
historical birthday party on September 30th
noted
elsewhere in this issue of the Crown. But there is
much more!
In last month’s Crown we delineated the process of
removing the Bible from its display case. As a
result, we have been able to explore this treasure
which has not been viewed in about 80 years. With
this opportunity, we have been both researching and
using the Bible. Continued on next page
The Vinegar Bible’s use has been as the source of reading the Gospel appointed for the day at each Sunday
service. The Vinegar Bible is the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible’s translation into English from the
numerous original languages that the Bible was written in. This version is much different from the Revised
Standard Version (RSV) in use now. The principal difference is that the RSV has more modern usages such as
you vs. thou. There are also some word differences with the use of a letter representing an “s” that appears as
what we would call an “f”. Here is an example
In verse 3 of the First Chapter, you will see the word that appears as “faid” but is actually “said”. There are
many other examples that can be seen on this page. The impact on reading the Gospel in this less familiar
translation is the importance of reading the text beforehand so as not to be surprised by these unusual
formulations. Note also the two side notes on this same page. These are alternative translations provided by the
KJV translators when there was some disagreement on the preferred translation and they have provided this
“minority” view. Note also the single word on the lower right of the page, “down”. This appears to be an error
but is actually the first word of the following page. This allows the lector to turn the page smoothly as well as to
be certain that only one page is turned.
Continued research into the Vinegar Bible has revealed some new information. Most recently it was thought
that there are 17 Vinegar Bibles in the United States. Three more have been located. These are at the Library of
Virginia, Southern Methodist University, and Bob Jones University. In each case the history of ownership is
spotty and the original purchaser is unknown.
