TRANSCRIPT
The Crucifer
“All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching the faith and correcting error, for re-
setting the direction of a person’s life and training him in good living. The scriptures are the com-
prehensive equipment of the person of God and fit him fully for all branches of his work.”
2 Timothy 3.16 (Phillips)
The Bible is an essential tool in understanding God, ourselves, and our faith.
The four Gospels testify to the Incarnation, ministry, death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
They teach us what Jesus said and did.
The epistles of the New Testament answer the question – ‘what now?’
From Romans to Revelation, the New Testament letters teach us the significance of the Cross.
They define ‘holy living’. They describe the elements of Christ-like love, and so much more.
Beginning Sunday May 27 at both our historic downtown church and at Christ Church South, we
will gather at Adult Sunday School to study the Letters of the New Testament throughout the
summer months.
Come and grow in the knowledge and love of God – this summer at Christ Church!
Faithfully in Christ Jesus,

I (Matt Boulter) wear three “hats” as a priest at Christ
Church in Tyler, Texas: Christ Church South, ministry to college
and university students, and newcomer ministry. What is new-
comer ministry? It is the work of the saints to invite, welcome,
and connect. To invite friends, family, co-workers, etc. into the
community of Christ Church (on Sunday mornings but also for
non-Sunday events and gatherings), to welcome them lovingly
and kindly once they arrive (thus showing them that they are
loved), and to connect them to meaningful ministry and com-
munity once they decide to make Christ Church home (thus
empowering them to use their spiritual gifts for the building up
of the Body of Christ).
Now, there are many things at Christ Church that are going
extremely well, thanks be to God. As Bishop Doyle reminded us
at Confirmation service May 13th in the nave, Christ Church has
confirmed a whopping 59 people over the last two semesters, a
fact that indeed indicates deep health and vitality. And yet, if
there is a “weak link” in the chain of the overall ministry of the
church, it is surely newcomer ministry. Why do I say this? Be-
cause out of the many folks who visit the church—and this is
true on both campuses—only a small percentage decide to
attend a second and third time, and only a small percentage
eventually get plugged into the life of Christ Church.
As I have prayed and brainstormed about this over the past
semester, I have come up with four major areas that need to be
refreshed: team reconfiguration, the overall process of “invite-
welcome-connect,” closed-loop “connectication,” and clear
public pathways to growth.
Among the issues which motivate my attention to team
reconfiguration is that I’ve realized that we can improve in en-
suring that our welcomers (a.k.a. “greeters”) and our connect-
ors (a.k.a. “follow-up folks”) are communicating. Having a greet-
er presence at our monthly Connection Team Meeting will help
greatly.
We’ve learned a ton about good processes of “invite-
welcome-connect” from Christ Church South. Every month a
team of Connectors should gather and intentionally reach out
to folks who have visited during the previous four weeks
(including Sunday worship and other events). Of course this
assumes that what I call our “contact info capture rate” is suffi-
ciently robust. Among other things, my plan is to implement
some lessons we’ve learned at that incubator called Christ
Church South within the downtown newcomer ministry.
Closed-loop “connectication” (a term I coined to encom-
pass both connection and communication) largely involves the
staff and clergy. Two examples of needed improvement: con-
sistent weekly “welcome messages” from the Rector (including
snail mail letters, emails, and texts) as well as consistent discus-
sion of newcomer cards at weekly staff meeting.
Clear, public pathways to growth are all about making it
clear and simple what next steps newcomers need to take in
order to go deeper into Christ Church. This is why, as you may
have noticed, we have two new newcomer pieces of
“literature” in the narthex (of each campus), one called “Diving
Deeper into Grace” and the other “Pathways to Belonging.”
In closing, two pieces of great news. First, I am convinced
that at both campuses we already have a healthy culture of
invitation. (Why else would we consistently have multiple bona
fide first time visitors Sunday after Sunday?) Second, God has
raised up a team of five key leaders (across both campuses) to
assist me in this crucial work. (At Christ Church South, we have
Don Dockum, Laura Zeiher, and Cally Finney, and at the down-
town campus those leaders are Julie Hicks and Ann Short.)
All in all, good things are happening in terms of Newcomer
Ministry at Christ Church! Thanks be to God and to God’s dear
people!

The Word of the Lord: Reading the Bible in a Year – Con-
tinued. Last September we began uncovering the Bible
book by book by exploring the stories of the Old and New
Testaments. We will have covered the Old Testament, the
four Gospels, and the Acts of the Apostles, and beginning
on May 27 we will continue in the New Testament with the
21 Epistles and the Book of Revelation.
Christians find instruction, endurance, encouragement and
hope through reading and meditating on Scripture (Romans
15:4). You may be wondering how we can cover Paul’s
Letter to the Romans in 45 minutes in a Sunday School
class. The simple answer is – we can’t. This is an overview
and the value in this study is in gaining context as we later
delve into the Books of the Bible in detail. This overview of
the Bible helps us see that the Bible is a unified story. It is
the story of God’s plan for the world fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
The study will be valuable for both experienced biblical
scholars and beginners. The class will be led by Christ
Church clergy and some gifted lay teachers. Please join us
on Sunday mornings beginning on May 27 at 9:00 am
Downtown in the Ascension Room and at 10:00 am at
Christ Church South in the Great Hall.
