Fall is always a busy time for ACS-SR. Last month our section held several events and I hope that you had time to participate in some of them. We held a joint dinner meeting with AIChE, had a YCC outreach event at the Salvation Army and hosted several events for National Chemistry Week. NCW events included hosting exhibit booths at S.E.E.D., the Georgia-Carolina State Fair, and the Western Carolina State Fair. I’d like to thank everyone that volunteered and participated.I’d particularly like to thank our Project Committee Chair, Linda Youmans-McDonald, for her hard work in organizing the NCW events and Katie Heroux and Brent Peters for organizing the YCC events.
Also in October we held our local section elections. The results of the election are in and I’m pleased to announce our new executive team members. Katie Heroux will be serving as Chair-Elect, and Matt Wellons and Lewis Baylor will again be serving as our Secretary and Treasurer, respectively. I look forward to the next year and believe that we have a great leadership team that will work to make our section a valuable resource for our members and the local community.
Sincerely,Lindsay T. Sexton, Ph.D.ACS-SR Chair

The YCC hosted the 2nd annual Halloween-themed chemistry event at the Salvation Army Thrift Store in North Augusta, SC. We had a great turnout with lots of return participants from last year. The YCC volunteers performed all new hands-on dem-onstrations this year, including ‘Scream Machine’, ‘Ghost Flubber’, ‘Frankenstein’s Toothpaste’, and ‘Oozing Pumpkins’, all from household supplies like Elmer’s glue, shaving cream, yeast, and more! Thanks to the staff and volunteers at the Salvation Army for advertising the event and providing the space and a pizza lunch for the kids. Our next (and last) event of 2014 will be our annual Holiday Social and Toy Drive. Stay tuned for more details!
