News from the Farm

The garden beds are almost finished and the

wood chips are beginning to cover the mud

paths out there. We expect to start planting at

the end of February, weather permitting. We

are excited to report the delivery of a “Hoop

House” kit. It is a 20’ by 48’ plastic covered

greenhouse: great for an outdoor classroom

on a rainy day AND a good place to grow our

tomatoes this year!

Contact Anza at [email protected] if you have experience putting one of these metal framed hoop

houses together. We need some special skills for that job.

Every Day Math

Parents can help students practice their math skills and see how math works in the real world by

incorporating math learning into family life. Here are some easy and fun ways to include math -- doing so

can be a fun bonding experience.

Cooking and baking can help students better understand fractions. Younger children can

explore all of the different measuring spoons and cups and discover how two half-cups of flower

or sugar gives them exactly the same amount as one full cup. Older children can help by doing

the math to double a recipe or cut one in half. Have them write down the new measurements and

then double-check their math before whipping up a tasty dish to share with the whole family!

Shopping with a calculator can help children practice addition and subtraction skills. Let them

add up how much you’ve spent on groceries, how much you’ve saved on coupons, or older

children can help decide which product size is the best value through calculating and comparing

cost per ounce/unit.

Home and Vehicle Maintenance provide lots of opportunities. Teach children to use a tire

gauge and calculate how much air needs to be added to or subtracted from car or bicycle tires.

Older kids can figure out gas mileage. Let kids help you calculate how much paint and/or

supplies you need for your next home project and, with proper supervision, kids can practice their

math skills helping to build simple structures or making sewing projects.

Saving money for a special treat is a powerful way to build math skills. Have children keep a

chart of how much money they will need to get their desired object and help them track how much

money they have saved to date.

Road Trip Games are a fun way to pass the time. Pick a number between 1 and 10 and have

each child try and find a license plate whose numbers equal the target number. Younger children

can add the numbers together. Older children can try adding some of the numbers together and

then subtracting one. And those who know multiplication and division can try out those skills.

You can also find many games and activities that reinforce math skills. In addition to online programs,

consider dominoes, card games and puzzles. Most of all, help keep math fun and let kids know that what

they are learning in school is valuable and will help them their whole lives.

Unexcused Absences: Snow Day We still have several students with unexcused absences from December 9th -- the day school started two hours late due to weather conditions. If you elected to keep your student home that day instead of send them to school at 11 a.m. and haven’t already sent in a note to excuse their absence, please do so. Given that school was in session, albeit delayed, we will need written notes to excuse any student absences on that day. Thank you!

Parents/Guardians of 4th

and 5th

looking to vote in board members for the 2017-2018 school year no later than April 30, 2017. Please join

their current meetings and help plan and prepare for SY 2017-18.

Students Learn About Seeds Students in second and third grades are learning all about seeds in preparation of planting the first crop in our new school garden this spring. Anza Muenchow, the WSU Master Gardener and Small Farms Coordinator and other Master Gardeners recently visited the classrooms and brought a sampling of seeds and sprouts for students to touch, dissect, and actually try with their taste buds! Students learned the difference between monocot and dicot seeds and took apart a split pea to identify all of the parts of a seed. They examined dried beans, sunflower seeds still in the flower, and learned how to grow alfalfa and radish sprouts from seed. We look forward to getting out in the garden this spring.
