In Cavalleria, he is Turiddu, the young man who abandons Santuzza (Eva-Maria Westbroek) in his pursuit of the married Lola (Ginger Costa-Jackson)—and ends up being killed in a duel with her husband, Alfio (George Gagnidze). In Pagliacci, Álvarez is Canio, the leader of a traveling vaudeville troupe. Patricia Racette sings Nedda, his unfaithful young wife, whose plans to run away with her lover are foiled by her spurned admirer Tonio (George Gag-nidze)—with equally tragic consequences. SARAH RUHL’S EURYDICE17-19, 24-26Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater)Eurydice is a 2003 play by Sarah Ruhl which retells the myth of Orpheus from

the perspective of Eurydice, his wife. The story focuses on Eurydice’s choice to return to earth with Orpheus or to stay in the underworld with her father (a character created by Ruhl). Ruhl made several changes to the original myth’s story-line. The most noticeable of these changes was that in the myth Orpheus succumbs to his desires and looks back at Eurydice, while in Ruhl’s version Eurydice calls out to Or-pheus (causing him to look back) perhaps in part because of her fear of reentering the world of the living and perhaps as a result of her desire to remain in the land of the dead with her father. Ruhl’s script has been explicitly written so as to be a playground for the designer of the sets. Translation by Guelan Luarca. Directed and designed by Loy Arcenas

JuneAPPROPRIATIION/CO-OPTATION/ADAPTATION: A GROUP SHOWBulwagang Fernando Amorsolo (Small Gallery), Pasilyo Victorio Edades (4F Hallway Gallery), 4th Floor Atrium Curated by Angel Shaw, co-produced with The Drawing Room Gallery & Philippine Women’s Univer-sity (PWU)—Institute for Heritage, Culture, and the Arts (IHCA). Angel Shaw recently asked the seven artists what the concepts/cultural practices “appropriation”, “co-optation”, and “adaptation” mean to them with the caveat

that context is of utmost importance—How do they respond when some Western critics continue to say that there is “no such thing as Asian Contemporary Art”? That their art is “derivative of Western Art”? Or that Appropriation Art is passé. These debates of the 90s persist. Addressing these issues today are inherent within these selected artists’ bodies of work.

MACEDA 100: NATIONAL ARTIST JOSE MACEDA CENTENNIALSeptember to DecemberBulwagang Juan Luna (Main Gallery)Presented for the Jose Maceda Centennial, the exhibit will open with a special re-enactment of Ma-ceda’s performance piece, Cassettes 100. On March 8, 1971, one hundred people carrying cassette players descended on the lobby of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Called Cassettes 100, the happening was orchestrated by composer Jose Maceda one year prior to Ferdinand Marcos’ declaration of Martial Law in the Philippines. Maceda had composed a score of one hundred complementary parts individually recorded onto cassettes played by the participants. The cassettes included sound from musical instruments and environmental noises such as gongs, human voices, clappers, flutes, leaves, shells and so forth. The main theatre lobby of the CCP had been adorned with rolls of white toilet paper and panels of paper. Floodlights flashed at six-minute intervals into relative darkness to indicate a change of positioning. Audience members were invited to circulate, interact and perform with the original hundred participants as images were projected onto the surfaces of paper and walls, blurring the distinction between participant and public amidst the chaos.

ARTHUR MILLER’S “HISTERIA” (THE CRUCIBLE)1-22Tanghalang Huseng BatuteThe Crucible, a play by ARTHUR MILLER that dramatizes how the establishment is used as a tool of the powerful few, exerting its magnitude on the many preventing any sense of community and collec-tivity from being formed. Miller’s warning is for individuals not to be afraid and to take a stand when their government is operated in a manner contrary to public interest. Miller wrote THE CRUCIBLE as an allegory of McCarthyism, when the US government ostracized people for being communists. Miller was questioned by the US House of Representatives’ Committee on Un-American activities. He was convicted of contempt by Congress for refusing to identify others present at the meetings he attended. THE CRUCIBLE was performed in Broadway and won the 1953 TONY AWARD for best play. It is now considered a literary classic all over the world. Tanghalang Pilipino’s version will be written by Dr. Jerry Respeto and will be directed by Atty. Nick Pichay.

BALLET PHILIPPINES’ “ITIM-ASU AND OTHER BALLETS”20-22Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (Main Theater)“Itim-Asu and Other Ballets” is a retrospective of significant works created by Ballet Philippines’ vi-sionary founder, National Artist for Dance Alice Reyes. “Itim Asu” is a modern ballet based on the true account of the grisly murder of Governor General Bustamante by the friars in 18 th -century Philippi-nes, and the revenge taken by his wife, who became known as the Black She-wolf. The ballet was hailed by critics as a “milestone in Philippine dance” and “the top cultural event of the year” after its world premiere at the CCP Main Theater in 1970. Other featured works include “Company”, “Chiches-ter Psalms”, and “Dugso”, Reyes’ collaboration with National Artist for Music Ramon Santos

NICK JOAQUIN’S “NANG TAMAAN NG PAG-IBIG SI JUAN TAMAD” (HOW LOVE CAME TO JUAN)1-17Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater)How Love Came to Juan Tamad is based

on NATIONAL ARTIST NICK JOAQUIN’s story included in his Pop Stories for Groovy Kids (1979). Critics describe it as “the correct explanation why Mariang Makiling forever nurses a broken heart, and also why Juan Tamad is a pop idol, a model for the young. This literary work of the National Artist mashes up a love triangle among the Filipino legends Mariang Makiling, Juan Tamad and Monte (Mt) Banahaw. The characters are complex with no one being purely a hero or a villain”. The stage version of HOW LOVE CAME TO JUAN TAMAD will be written by Rody Vera, and will be directed by Ed Lacson. 2017 marks Joaquin’s 100th birthday.

TANGHALANG NICANOR ABELARDO (Main Theater)The theater has four levels: Orchestra, Boxes, Balcony I and Balcony II and is able to accomodate a total of 1,800 guests. The theater has a split orchestra pit floor and is equipped to meet the requirements of large theatrical production such as ballets, operas, symphonic concerts and other musicals.

TANGHALANG AURELIO TOLENTINO (Little Theater)The Little Theater is a conventional proscenium stage, designed for drama, chamber music, solo recitals, lectures and film screenings, with a capacity of 418 guests. The stage curtain is a tapestry made in Kyoto, Japan, based on the painting of Roberto Chabet, former director of the CCP Museum.

TANGHALANG HUSENG BATUTE (Studio Theater)Is designed for experimental production and has two levels. The upper level serves as a Gallery, the lowerlevel as a studio which features a variable stage. As such, audience capacity varies depending n the size of the stage or acting area.

TANGHALANG MANUEL CONDE (Dream Theater)The CCP Dream Theater is the first direct-to-home satellite venue for art and culture films and videos on the arts of the Philippines.

The Cultural Center of the Philippines was created in 1966 through Executive Order No. 30, with the purpose of promoting and preserving Filipino arts and culture. It was formally inaugurated on September 8, 1969, starting a three-month long inaugural festival opened by the epic musical Dularawan. Since then, the CCP has sought to truly embody its logo of katotohanan (truth), kagandahan (beauty) and kabutihan (goodness). The best artists from all over the country and around the world have graced the CCP theaters and galleries, enthralling Filipinos for over thirty years. At present, the CCP is attached to the Office of the President and is under the umbrella of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts for policy and program coordination. Performing companies representing dance, music and theater reside within the CCP. It has four resident dance companies: Ballet Philippines, Philippine Ballet Theatre, the Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group and the Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company. Tanghalang Pilipino is the CCP’s resident theater company while music is represented by the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, the UST Symphony Orchestra, the Philippine Madrigal Singers and the National Music Competitions for Young Artists Foundation (NAMCYA). The CCP also covers the mass media, as well as the literary and visual arts, encouraging the growth of aspiring artists in these fields through numerous workshops, seminars, anthologies, exhibits, symposia as well as competitions and awards.

Through its Cultural Exchange Program, the CCP supports the growth and development of arts councils all over the country through relevant workshops and seminars. In addition, the CCP has also established ties with various international organizations such as the Association of Asia Pacific Performing Arts Center, the Conseil International des Organisations de Festivals de Folklore et d’Arts Traditonnels (CIOFF), the World Dance Alliance and the International Theater Institute. Through exchange programs with these organizations and with other institutions, Filipinos have been able to glimpse the beauty of different cultures from various countries, witnessing many a triumphant performance from highly-acclaimed artists all over the world. Through the projects under its Arts for the People Program, the CCP reinforces the truism that culture and the arts are essential aspects of our being Filipino and an important pillar in our development as a society and progress as a nation.

The CCP continues to emphasize the Filipino lakas ng loob (inner strength) in its programs that highlight the virtues of galing, galang and dangal (excellence, respect and integrity), reaffirming its commitment to the growth and development of the Filipino nation and its arts and culture.

THE CCP PRE-SHOW CHIMESThe CCP pre-show chimes carry the melody from Prelude Etnika, a composition for solo guitar written by Lucrecia R. Kasilag, National Artist for Music and former Artistic Director of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. The pre-show chimes launched on September 8, 2004 replacing the simple bell chimes that signal the start of a program. The melody recalls the dong-dong-ay air heard during social gatherings of the tribes in the Cordillera region.
