Merlin’s pants, the LADA has been busy con-juring magic and making memories! In Sep-tember our minds were challenged with N.E.W.T. Level HP Jeopardy, which was entirely designed by member Lauren Suarez. In October we held “Aloha”mora, a tropical evening with food, cocktails, and games, at Don the Beachcomber in Sunset Beach. No-vember was a busy month with the Comikaze Expo, Potted Potter, a signing at B&N in Huntington Beach with Kazu Kibuishi, who designed 7 new covers for the HP books, and one of the most interesting book club discus-sions we’ve had about the beautiful but baf-fling book, “The Night Circus.”

One of our mem-bers, Jeannie Lin, got to meet and chat with Robbie Coltrane (aka our beloved half-giant, Hagrid), at a screening for Great

Expectations and she wrote this snippet about the experience: “I went to see Great Expectations with … great expectations. For anyone who had a good dose of Merchant Ivory films growing up, or is a fan of Dickens, or just likes those ol’ pretty English pe-riod pieces (they're not boring!), you'll enjoy this newest rendition. and the most winning cocktail, Winky’s Wicked Wanker Wassail. Of course, here in the Army everyone is a winner, so Team Kreacher went home with Owl Stickers too. If you missed the fun this time around, worry not! The ministry is already at work tossing around ideas for Wizard Chef IV. To tide you over, here is the recipe for Jessica Zipay’s Delicious cocktail.

Hey LADA! Wow, it has been quite some time since we last reached

out to you. We are still here though, perpetrating the magi-cal shenanigans one day at a time! Our first profile for this issue of the Prophet is Kelly "Little Wolf” King. LW comes to us from everywhere and nowhere but found a home in LADA in May 2011 and

shortly thereafter joined the coveted ranks of the "Team That Shall Not Be Named." LW is another one of our "gypsy witches" who spent her childhood in several different places before finally parking her broom in Costa Mesa, CA. A drama teacher without the "drama" and a champion of non-magic folk and rights for all, she spent a few years teach-ing Muggle Studies as well as sports. Rumor has it she at-tempted to teach them Quid-ditch with disastrous results. Another dilemma for the Sort-ing Hat, LW is what you call a

Raventhrin or Slitherclaw - witty and intelligent, yet cun-ning and ambitious. A slave to ‘Prisoner of Azkaban,’ LW's shelves are dominated by the story of Sirius Black. Like a lot of us within LADA's inner cir-cle, LW didn't buy the hype at first, but at the suggestion of a student she relented and was automatically sucked into the world of the boy wizard. A love for like-minded people brought her into the realm of LADA and our crazy, fun lov-ing ways. If you see her at one of our meetups be sure to say hello!

Next up we have Robb Yanagihara who hails from Oxnard, CA and is one of the few members of LADA who actually hails from CA origi-nally. Like LW, Robb swelled

the ranks of our little family in May 2011. He works in prop building and is a master in mug-gle hand-to-hand and close-quarter combat. Probably the only Slytherin I would trust to have my back in a fight, Robb told the Sorting Hat to get stuffed and "Not Gryffindor! Not Gryffindor!" Not much of a fan of the written word due to his inability to sit still, the train-ing and combat scenes in the ‘Half Blood Prince’ and ‘Order of the Phoenix’ movies allowed him to be an "active nerd."

Unlike the rest of us, Robb was more into the live action side of HP versus the books. Say “hi” to Robb when you see him; however, be sure to be on your best behavior. His eyes change color when he gets angry and he is rumored to carry a "laser sword." That's it for this issue. It is my fondest wish that by the time most of you read this we will be knee deep in the 3rd Annual Harry Potter Skate Night. Until then and as AL-WAYS … Be Well.

Back by popular demand, this year’s Wizard Chef III: The Pan-try of Secrets brought out LADA foodies from across the greater Los Angles area to battle in a fierce culinary duel in Hog-warts Kitchen Stadium at The Burrow using a cauldron full of mystery ingredients. Witch hosts Tanya Mueller and Tabitha Davis (ne Potter) whipped up a culi-nary adventure of mystery incor-porating the Chamber of Secrets theme. Teams Dobby and Kreacher, randomly selected, an-swered trivia questions for piles of delicious galleons. With money in hand the teams assem-bled their menu by purchasing high quality mystery ingredients, though they didn’t know what they would be cooking until the countdown clock started. In ad-dition to preparing a feast befit-ting a wizard including an appe-tizer, main dish, dessert, and cocktail, one of which had to be vegetarian, teams were also asked to design a restaurant table set-ting and menu showcasing team members’ crafty talents. Team Dobby won the day, and the classy red muggle hats, with their elegant table assignments, beauti-ful menu, and a feast of delicious dishes. Their delectable eats in-cluded Liberation Salad, Manic Munchy Crunchy Tostadas with blue crab and pancetta, Master Potter’s Banana Bread Pudding,

Deprived of mid-night releases and screenings to whet* their wands, wiz-ards and muggles alike traversed the land in desperate need of a magical resurgence. Who should an-swer our anguished

call but two moderately handsome British lads looking to entertain and educate us Americans with their cheeky retelling of the noble chronicle of Harry Potter, as conveyed by the great documentarian, JK Rowling. Put-ting a fresh twist on a classic legend, our would-be heroes claimed the ability to con-dense 4,000 odd pages of saga into 70 min-utes of not so well-mannered frivolity.** With vaudevillian expertise, Dan and Jeff stu-pefied audiences with their frenzied quick changes, silly accents, and amazing (ly low budget) special effects. While the show re-volves around a Harry Potter scholar and his buddy, who doesn’t know his Turkish De-lights from his Pumpkin Pasties, the farce

belies a piercing wit that could make a Raven-claw jealous. After spectating the spectacular spectacle, LADA members were treated to a private Q&A with Dan and Jeff. With be-witching accents our new crush-worthy leading men proffered mesmerizing tales of past per-formances, including the time that living leg-end and our favorite hagiographer, JK Rowling herself, came to partake of the festivities, only to be rejected at the door for tardiness. Where’s a time turner when you need one? *Please do not confuse with WET, as immer-sion is sure to damage even the strongest of wand cores! ** “It’s like Sparknotes for Wizards!” ex-claimed Hogwarts alumna and muggle-lover enthusiast Jenny Fahh

“What are your strengths and weaknesses?” What? Did I inadvertently show up for an in-terview? No, it was just people strategically forming their teams in the lobby of All Star Lanes waiting to be admitted to the Geek Fan-dom Pub Trivia Night on April 12th. The night had it all: trivia from some of my favorite fandoms, geeky themed drinks, cos-players, and late-night karaoke. What more could I ask for? It was the little details that really made the night, what with all the Quizmasters dressed as characters from their fandom trivia round in-cluding a Molly Hooper, a Doctor, a Qarth princess, a Sith Lord, and a Hogwarts student. Gollum lorded over us on top of a speaker and

patrolled the parking lot on his Tardis-cycle. Ever drunk a Time Lord’s Tardis or a Grand Jedi Master Yoda? I have. Did I mention the Sith Lord carried a lightsaber? Since the night dabbled in many popular fandoms, 6 to be exact, there was something for everyone. The questions were difficult and riveting, but it was comforting to share a look of pure confusion with the neighboring tables. I wonder how many teams were confident enough to double down? Some of the grand prizes were donated by the BBC and HBO and to cap the night, a couple of Journey songs were sung by LADA members. All in all the night was a success and I can’t wait for another one like it.

“aloha”mora: wizards on holiday By: dr. Tanya mueller

In October the LADA team brought the wizarding community “Aloha”mora: Wizards on Holiday, a cele-bration of all things magically exotic and tropical at Don the Beachcomber in Sunset Beach. After careful study of muggle tropical fashions and traditions we ran to our portkeys and began our festivities. The night started with a human scavenger hunt where participants earned leis for finding witches and wizards who met certain criteria. Next, we were challenged to carve tikis from potatoes, spear cherries out of a glass, and win a skull and bones Jenga tournament. We ended the night with a team hula dance contest for best “Battle of Hogwarts” interpretive hula. Our merry band of witches and wizards must have studied up on muggle traditions because we had some amazing potato head tiki carvings and incredibly passionate rendi-tions of the Battle of Hogwarts, in addition to a whole lot of relaxed and well-mannered frivolity.

In late September of this last year the LADA hosted N.E.W.T. Level Harry Potter Jeopardy. Twenty lucky members of our group were sorted into Houses based on their Harry Potter knowledge, which made this a very intimate, yet thrilling, event. Lauren Suarez, a member of our dedicated Leadership Team, developed the game to play just like an episode of the beloved TV game show, but entirely within the HP Universe. Harry Potter themed categories such as ‘Horcruxes,’ ‘Magical Creatures,’ ‘Transportation,’ ‘Food and Drink,’ and ‘Hogwarts, A History’ challenged contest-ants, who independently answered questions to earn galleons for their team. The careful sorting of teams into groups with relatively equal ranges of HP knowledge made for a fair and fun game. Though all teams brought their A-Games, Team Gryffindor ultimately prevailed. If we all study hard, perhaps this will become an annual event!
