The collection captures generations of UW-Madison student opinion, news, events, and cultural history. Launched in 1892, The Daily Cardinal has published almost continuously and has thrived during the transition from print to a digital-and-print news format. A searchable digital collection of The Daily Cardinal would provide important scholarship, research, and informational value to current students, alumni, and researchers. The collection would build upon completed digital projects, including the Badger yearbooks and the UW Alumni Association magazine. The UW Archivesmost common request is for digital copies of, or content from The Daily Cardinal Collection. The UW-Libraries is partnering with the Daily Cardinal leadership and the Daily Cardinal Alumni Association to make this print collection accessible to the world. With the 125 th Anniversary of the Daily Cardinal in 2017, this is a fitting time to make this collection available online. Preserving the student voice of UW-Madison Access. Currently, the collection can only be accessed with assistance by Library Archives staff. This project will allow for free, online access to the entire collection. Preservation. The fragile and at-risk newspapers will be digitized as 300 DPI, 24-bit color TIFF files. The original copies will be preserved at the UW Archives and stored at the highest archival quality standards. Online Search. The digitization process will allow for keyword searching of the articles, headlines, and captions. The Daily Cardinal

The Daily Cardinal is published in print Monday and Thursday and distributed at the University of

Wisconsin-Madison and in the surrounding community with a circulation of 10,000. The Cardinal is

a nonprofit organization run by its staff members and elected editors. It receives no funds from the

university and is completely independent. Operating revenue is generated from advertising and

subscription sales.

The Cardinal was founded in 1892 by William Wesley Young who named the paper after UW-

Madison's official colors, cardinal and white.

The Cardinal is a member of the Associated Collegiate Press and the Wisconsin Newspaper

Association.

UW-Madison Libraries

The heart of every great university is its library. Libraries and students have evolved to meet the

UW Digital Collections Center (UWDCC)

Within the UW-Libraries, the UWDCC, University of Wisconsin Digital Collections Center has

worked collaboratively with UW System faculty, staff, and librarians to create and provide access to

digital resources that support the teaching and research needs of the UW community.

Resources within the collections are free and publicly accessible online. They are organized into

collections that span a range of subjects including art, ecology, literature, history, music, natural

resources, science, social sciences, the State of Wisconsin, and the University of Wisconsin.

Online Search. The digitization process will allow for keyword searching of the articles, headlines, and captions. Guests will be able to search by keyword or browse issues of the Daily Cardinal by date. Patrons can also download a single page image or a PDF of an entire issue."

The digitized images will be curated by the UW Digital Collection Center and will be highlighted as a collection within the UW-Madison Collection, alongside the Badger Yearbooks, manuscripts, sound recordings, photographs, maps and other resources deemed important to the study of our state’s university system and its campuses.
