Men’s fashion is on the rise, with designers diving into new color patterns and styles, but University males may be hesitant to follow suit.

Esquire magazine count-ed sand-blasted jeans, bright boots and unlined blazers among its 25 men’s fashion trends for spring 2012, but University students take a different approach, declaring individuality as the biggest indicator of a fashionable male.

Colby Rushing, con-struction management sopho-more, said affordability was

the most important aspect of his daily wardrobe.

“I get all my clothes from the thrift store,” Rush-ing said. “I don’t think you need a lot of money to look decent.”

Rushing said his every-day style consists of crew neck sweaters and gym shorts, accessorized with a vintage snapback hat. For for-mal wear, he prefers to wear a polo-style button down.

Kristina Pellegrini, fash-ion merchandising sopho-more, said she prefers men with a refi ned style, who can add fl air to their garb when necessary.

“I love casual blazers on men.” Pellegrini said. “Men’s fashion has become more polished. The messy look is out.”

Pellegrini said men should individualize their

fashion trends and take risks, but there is a limit on what is appropriate for males. She said the most common fash-ion faux-pas she has wit-nessed around campus are sagging pants and overly-skinny skinny jeans.

Both Pellegrini and Rushing said fraternity-in-spired wear dominates male fashion on campus. Both listed shades, Polos and short shorts when describing the popular look found among fraternity brothers.

“It’s either you dress like you’re in a frat or you dress comfortable and cool,” Rush-ing said.

Nicholas Morel, busi-ness senior and member of the Acacia fraternity, said the similarity in fraternity appar-el is mainly because of how

Personal fitness is a pri-ority for many students on campus, but as they balance class, work and time in the gym, getting in shape can be a tall order.

Here are four cool gad-gets to help with healthy ex-ercising:

1. Fibit UltraThe Fibit Ultra is a small,

wireless clip that tracks the number of steps taken, calo-ries burned, calories con-sumed and flights of stairs climbed, as well as sleeping patterns.

The device is only half the package, though. At fibit.com, users can view workout totals and customize your calorie counter by add-ing specific foods.

With that information, users can apply different techniques to increase step-counts or try and sleep longer and better.

2. Adidas miCoachFor more serious work-

outs, the miCoach pacer bun-dle comes with useful tools to track activities.

It comes with a miCoach pacer, a heart rate monitor and a stride sensor. All to-gether, these can give a clear idea of workout activity.

Users also have the abil-ity to share these stats across social networking sites, comparing and bragging to friends about how fit they are.

3. iPod NanoWith the release of a

software update last year, the iPod Nano is more of a work-out tool than ever before.

A built-in accelerom-eter tracks steps taken and calories burned, and the Na-no’s handy clip can attach to almost anything. Plus, a person’s favorite songs

provide motivation for finish-ing that last half-mile.

The included FM tuner makes radio available to the MP3 player, allowing for greater music variety.

4. A sports watchGetting down to the ba-

sics, a good sports watch is the easiest way to start track-ing stats about an everyday routine.

Some include a pedom-eter and distance calculator, while others boast heart rate monitors and a built-in GPS.

The Nike+ SportWatch GPS is a great product that tracks time, distance, pace, heart rate and calories burned in addition to the GPS that keeps track of locations.

If you take a walk around the Quad or poke your head into almost any classroom, it won’t be long before you real-ize facial hair is making a big comeback. The problem is, many men new to beard grow-ing don’t know how to take care of their newly acquired facial accessories.

As a proud beard owner myself, the alarming num-ber of overgrown, unwashed beards disturbs me. That’s why I’ve outlined a set of guidelines below for all beard owners to follow.

1. If you can’t grow a beard, don’t.

The only thing worse than an overgrown beard is an undergrown one. Rather than coming off as manly, a feeble attempt at growing a

beard screams to everyone that you’re trying too hard.

This epidemic seems to mostly affect freshmen. The problem is, a lot of guys aren’t capable of growing a proper beard at this time, so they wind up with an odd-looking hint of a mustache or a repulsive neck beard.

Anyone I went to high school with could tell you I was a perpetrator of this rule, so learn from my mistake. If you can’t grow a beard now, just keep a clean-shaven face. Your time will come.

2. Don’t overgrow your beard.I understand the temp-

tation to grow your beard to Gandalf-like proportions, and indeed, in places like a fantasy fi lm, such a beard can look great.

But let’s be realistic here.

Students looking to eat healthy around campus don’t have to worry about thinning out their wallets.

A number of near- and on-campus locations offer filling but lower-cost meals for students to combat the “Freshman 15.” And although campus offers vegetables, fruits and lean protein foods in the 459 and The 5 dining halls, students can still find a variety of similar, affordable foods off campus as well.

Some options on the border of campus include the West Chimes Street res-taurant Alibaba Greek and

Lebanese Cafe’s chicken shawarma meal, which of-fers marinated chicken with chickpea-made hummus, sal-ad, rice and pita bread. While the meal is priced at $7.95, it offers a filling, diverse meal on one plate.

Students looking to grab an on-the-go filler or a tasty, cool drink can swing by Smoothie King on the corner of State Street and Highland Road. “Trim down” smooth-ies include fruit-flavored drinks with less than 300 cal-ories, along with a multitude of “stay healthy” smoothies. Twenty-ounce smoothies cost just over $5.

Students looking for healthy sandwich options have a number of locations to choose from near the Uni-versity. Along with monthly $5 footlong sandwich deals, Subway on State street offers

roasted chicken or ham sand-wiches for $3.50.

State Street’s Pita Pit has healthy option pitas, like the veggie and hummus pitas, which run at about $6, while turkey and similar lean pro-tein pitas run slightly more than $6. The store also has a spicy black bean pita for

$6.95. Qdoba on Burbank Drive

and Atcha Bakery on Nichol-son Drive both offer cheap eats with healthy twists for students willing to travel slightly farther off campus.

[Top left] Suede fringe boots and [bottom left] neutral-toned bags will transition well from winter to spring wear. [Right] Psychology senior Grace Kulage dons a feminine knit jacket.

For a few weeks, we in Baton Rouge have “sprinter time,” a combination of spring and winter, when temperatures can range be-tween 30 and 55 degrees as cold fronts pass over the river and sweep into the rest of the city.

In the coming months, most would be happy to drape an ankle-length trench coat around the nape of their neck and wool and cashmere on the broad of their back, but we instead look con-fused by sprinting past win-ter straight to spring in suede knee boots with tank tops.

But for good reason. In the morning, Jack Frost may nip at noses, but by noon it’s just about sizzling under your stylish tweed cropped

jacket or wool blend blazer. L e t ’ s

The standardized tests and school assemblies are long gone, but for some University students, one as-pect of high school life re-mains – acne.

Acne plagues a major-ity of youths as they under-go puberty and transform into adults. Acne appears as the unfortunate side ef-fect produced by the same hormones that spur physi-cal maturation, according to acne.com .

Despite the wishes of today’s youth, acne often persists after puberty is done. While this is often

due to biological factors, college life has been found to be conducive to blemish-es for several reasons.

College students often think about economic and caloric factors when shap-ing their diet, but those con-scious of their complexion should take other factors into consideration.

Acne.com advises stu-dents to watch their meat and dairy product intake, as American meat and dairy products often contain hormones and antibiotics which can cause bacteria and infl ammation in the pores of the skin.

“I try to stay away from snacking on too many pro-cessed or dairy foods,” said Kelly McCoy, kinesiology junior .

Grooming and makeup products also act as a cata-

lyst for acne breakouts. Acne.com suggests limit-ing the amount of gels or hairsprays one uses, as they clog pores and cause acne if they come into contact with skin.

Stress may be the big-gest acne-causing factor for college students to over-come. According to acne.com , all types of stress trigger an infl ammatory re-sponse in the body, which can lead the pores of the skin to break and form pim-ples.

Combatting acne through careful decisions regarding diet, grooming products and stress is a good start, but for some it is not enough to ward off the skin disease.

Topical creams are a popular line of defense against acne, but more

serious medications like Accutane are becoming more prevalent.

While acne is a medical condition that may cause emotional and psychologi-cal harm, the Federal Drug Administration warns of possible side effects associ-ated with acne treatments like Accutane .

“I used Accutane and it worked well, but I had a friend encounter side ef-fects while using it,” Mc-Coy said.

Regardless of acne treatment, careful choices can help cloudy complex-ions clear.

Pros: Looks natural and doesn’t clump.

Cons: Reapplication needed throughout the day.

Pros: Long-lasting wear with a natural look.

Cons: Dif cult to remove.

Pros: Provides the dramatic ef-fect of false eyelashes without the messy glue.

Cons: Dif cult to reapply when it akes off after extended wear, sometimes causing eye irritation.

LIPSTAIN

Pros: Lowest cost with largest color variety — “Rock on Ruby” is a starlet-worthy red.

Cons: All that head-turning color easily transfers and bleeds.

Pros: Longest-lasting lip color that looks natural and berry-stained.

Cons: Leaves lips feeling tight and dry. The accompanying balm helps, but feels cakey after a while.

DRY SHAMPOO Pros: Feels and looks natural with no dry or sticky residue.

Cons: Reapplication needed, but not frequently.

Pros: With 5.7 oz , it has the best volume-per-price of the three.

Pros: Light coconut smell. Easily rubs in by hand.

Cons: Limited availability. CVS might be the only chain that carries it in the area, and only in a 1.76 oz size.

Pros: Completely absorbs any oil or odor and is long-lasting. You could probably go a week without washing your hair.

Cons: The price. The $13 can only has 1.8 oz. The full size runs at $24 for 4.1 oz.

We’ve all been there — you hit the snooze button one too many times and barely have time to brush your teeth, let alone put on full makeup. These three cosmetic items are quick and easy to apply while running out the door to class, and they’ll help you look like you got much more sleep than you prob-ably did after hitting Tigerland.

Cons: Easily seen in dark hair and requires a brush or comb. Short-lived effect, needs multiple applications and made hair texture very dry.

trying to comprehend the atrocity of her bottom half. In no way can I imagine that outfit being fashionable, but if you wish for people to totally ignore your facial features, by all means help yourself to this look.

What I do love to see is a whole look assembled with thought and complimentary color palettes.

If you’re a brunette or honey-haired blonde with fair or brown skin tone, try a jewel-toned hat, head wrap or hoodie that would seriously compliment stone-washed fitted jeans with neutral or black fringe boots and matching jean or twill vest.

If you’re more of the preppy type, a nice unisex look would be a casually sophisticated Ralph Lau-ren striped button-through shirt, paired with a lovely

classic-fit dark denim and top-sider shoe or moccasin.

This look is especial-ly great for ladies, with a slightly fitted cap sleeve or quarter-length-sleeved sweater so you can get through your day in the city without feeling suffocated by the afternoon.

A nice fruit-colored crew neck cardigan could accompany a peanut but-ter messenger bag quite smoothly through the hall-ways, with the ease of knowing Blue Bayou won’t be dripping underneath your armpit.

Spring is either ap-proaching soon or months down the line. I can never really tell, but I hope these pointers help you stay on the appropriate side of the style line.

and falafel sandwich meals, which can be paired with hummus or a salad, with a drink, all for $5.

While Qdoba provides multiple healthy options, naked burritos — which in-clude the same ingredients as their burritos but with-out the tortilla — and taco

salads each contain lower calorie food ranging from $5 to almost $7. Qdoba also claims buying a naked bur-rito cuts 330 calories and 54 grams of carbohydrates from the meal.

easy it is to wear. “There is a basic uni-

formity within fraternities, but everyone can wear what they please,” Morel said.

Morel, who describes his style as simplistic, said men’s fashion is moving into a “neo-hippy era,” where most men wear bean-ies and skinny jeans. He said his trendiest garment is his dad’s 1980s-style ski jacket.

Pellegrini said it is pos-sible for every man to be fashionable on a daily basis. She said men should ditch the T-shirt and sweatpants look and try a bolder fashion alternative.

“It’s not really a hard thing to do,” Pellegrini said. “A button-down with a shirt under it could be considered fashionable.”

Think about what a prospec-tive employer sees when you walk into an interview with a chest-length beard. Chances are you won’t walk out of the offi ce with that job.

College is simply not the place to grow a large beard. These are the years in which you meet people that can infl u-ence the rest of your life, so for now, keep it sharp.

3. Know how to properly care for your beard.

Treat your beard as you would your signifi cant other. It

must be cared for and loved, or else it will be your worst night-mare.

The best way to take care of a beard is daily shampooing. If you’re really serious about your beard upkeep, condition-ing doesn’t hurt either.

A twice-daily brushing is also a good way to keep your beard from getting out of con-trol. It’s best to do this directly after a morning shower and be-fore going to bed.

4. Know when to trim. This could have gone in

the section about overgrow-ing your beard, but the lack of

trimmed beards on campus is alarming enough to merit its own section.

Your beard will probably only grow fully in certain sec-tions around your mid-face and under your chin, but will continue to trail down your neck or up your face. Put sim-ply, this just doesn’t look good. Be sure to trim your beard be-fore you begin to look like a wannabe mountain man.

5. Know when to shave.I’ll be the fi rst to admit

shaving sucks. Every man — even those who do it daily — hates shaving. It’s a complete

waste of time and I’m fi rmly convinced the world would be a better place if shaving were not the norm.

Sadly, that’s not the world we live in. Sometimes, shaving is just necessary. Whether it’s for an important job interview or a relative’s wedding, you’ll have to shave eventually.

But the great thing about beards is, just like a good friend, they’ll always come back to you. It’s just a matter of time.
