topped 35 goals last season. The core offensively with Corey
and Krit and Becky (Lynch) com-ing back together, ... has been ahuge benefit for us, Levy said.
Taylor has been a fixture in theoffense for the last three seasonsdespite struggling with injuriestwo years ago and a long-runningillness in 2009.
Krit has really done a great
job battling through some healthissues, Levy said.
Shes been a total warrior in her
approach to all of it. I think shesgained great perspective.
On the defensive side of the ball, things start with KristenCarr.
A holding midfielder, Carr pro-vides intimidation in the middle ofthe field and helps keep the actionon the opponents half.
But if opponents get throughCarr, then theres always a safety
net in the hands of Logan Ripley, the 2009 national goalkeeper ofthe year.
Were excited to have her back,Levy said of Ripley. Shes the bestgoalkeeper weve had in this pro-gram.
UNC will have to replace lastseasons top defender in AmberFalcone.
But on the plus side, the teamreturns all the other defensivestarters.
Although wed love to have
Amber for another year, Im reallyconfident in what our returningplayers can do, Levy said.
Granted, UNC will have plentyof momentum to build upon afterits postseason run to the title.
The Tar Heels downed power-ful NCAA foes Notre Dame andMaryland.
Our kids now know how hardthey have to work, Levy said.

Senior Katrina Tsangs motiva-tion for her final season of tennis
was admittedly clich.A pair of nail-biting, edge-of-
your-seat, pressure-cooker lossesto your biggest rival tends to pro-
duce a familiar response.Duke, Tsang said when asked
what her teams biggest match ofthe season would be. Especiallysince they were national champi-ons last year.
The narrow defeats changedwhat Tsang said could have been adream season for the UNC wom-ens tennis team into a nightmare.
Clemson eventually bounced theTar Heels from the second round ofthe NCAA Tournament. As Dukecruised to a championship, the
Tar Heels wondered what mighthave been had a 4-3 decision on
April 1 or a 4-2 result in the ACCTournament gone their way.
And with key starters AustinSmith, Meg Fanjoy and LauraReichert having exhausted theireligibility, 2010 figured to be arebuilding year for UNC.
Someone forgot to tell that tothis years Tar Heels.
North Carolina has blitzedthrough its January and Februaryopposition, posting an unblem-
ished 7-0 record and shooting upto No. 11 in the ranking.
Along the way, UNC hasnt hadany trouble brushing aside high-
quality competi-tion, registering
wins against fourranked teams.
The early sea-son hit parade
was highlighted by an upset of
then-No. 6 NotreDame in SouthBend, Ind.
The Tar Heelshave failed to
yield a singledoubles point in
any of their seven matches so far,and their top singles players haveproven more than capable.
Tsang has posted a 4-2 recordplaying on the No. 1 court, whileteammate Sanaz Marand has piledup a perfect 7-0 record playing
mostly at No. 2.Marand is ranked No. 25 in the
country, while Tsang is No. 100.Katrina and Sanaz are a one-
two punch that are as difficult asany in the nation, coach BrianKalbas said. We feel we have thestrength at the top and some depthat the bottom to compete withmost of all teams.
Kalbas wont have to wait verylong to find out how well UNC cancompete against the best.
North Carolina plays ITA team
nationals this weekend, where itwill participate in a 16-team tour-nament against the top teams in thecountry including No. 1 Duke.

To a casual observer, the NorthCarolina mens tennis team mightnot seem like anything specialcoming into this season.
In addition to returning a ros-ter stocked with almost the same
group that finished 17-11 in 2009and fell in the second round of theNCAA Tournament, UNC lost itsNo. 2 player last season, TaylorFogleman, to graduation.
But senior Clay Donato, who over-saw the teams development this pastoffseason, knows differently.
We have a stacked team withtremendous potential, Donatosaid.
I believe that this is the bestteam Ive seen in my four yearsplaying here, and thats saying
something, as we made it to thefinal four when I was a sopho-more.
Even on a team well-stockedwith talent, Donato is the unques-tioned No. 1.
Earlier this season, the seniorbecame the first North Carolinaplayer since 2005 to qualify forITA National Indoors after win-ning the ITA Carolinas Regionalsingles title.
The No. 22 Tar Heels have feast-ed on competition not ranked in the
top 10 of the national rankings. They claim a 5-0 record against
those teams, including a 4-2 upsetof then-No. 20 Miami.

To prep for his second season atNorth Carolina, coach Joe Breschihad the mens lacrosse team diveinto four weeks of practice, twopreseason scrimmages and mul-tiple playing opportunities with
UNC alumni. But Breschi and the team want-
ed more from each other.Whether bringing ice cream
to kids in the UNC ChildrensHospital or reading a chapter a
week in John C. Maxwells Talentis Never Enough, the team believes
that a strong commitment to com-munity service and a unique teamreading program is key to itsdevelopment.
And that commitment has madethis team one of the most tightly-knit groups Breschi has ever seen.
If we have our individual goalsfocused on a team-oriented path,
we can achieve more, Breschi said. Thus, everybody will succeed. Itsnot just doing things on the field.
After a 12-6 (0-3 ACC) record, last years team traveled to theNCAA Tournament and wereeliminated in a narrow 12-11 fall toDuke in the quarterfinals.
With the loss of a number ofkey players, including goalieGrant Zimmerman and face-offspecialist Shane Walterhoefer, this years starting lineup holdsa mix of veteran returnees andstandout newcomers.
For the experienced players, marquee attackman and first-team
All-American Billy Bitter will leadthe Tar Heels offense, returningas the leading scorer with 46 goalsfrom last season.
Defenseman Ryan Flanaganand midfielder Sean DeLaney, aco-captain, were also selected asthird-team All-Americans and willhelp nurture the freshman class inadjusting to collegiate play.
Were still working out thekinks with the freshmen, Bittersaid. This is my second year withthe new coaches, so its my job to
guide them to the spots they haveto be in on and off the field.
Four of UNCs starting midfieldpositions have been claimed by
rookies Cam Wood, Ian Braddish,Greg McBride, and Zander Walters.Fellow freshman Marcus Holman
will join the starting ranks along-side Bitter as an attackman.
Despite a young midfield,Breschis squad boasts an expe-rienced defense that has veteranleadership alongside the cur-
rent starting goalie, junior ChrisMadalon.
Our young midfield, our secondgroup, has to come along quickly,Breschi said.
The defense has to make animpact for us, and I like the depthat goalie, but its nice to have a clear
voice there. With a rigorous schedule ahead,
the No. 4 Tar Heels will face a totalof seven top-20 teams including
ACC competitors No. 2 Duke, No.3 Virginia and No. 8 Maryland.
With a 13-5 scrimmage victoryagainst No. 15 Brown in Octoberand a recent 8-8 tie with No. 19Bucknell in snowy conditionsunder its belt, North Carolina
opened regular season play withan 11-5 win against JacksonvilleUniversity last Saturday.
But UNC is focusing on prepar-ing for games of a much closer mar-gin and is looking to avenge threeof its one-goal losses to conferenceteams from last season.
All eyes have been set on thatrevenge with a stop first at the
ACC Tournament and then to theNCAAs.
Three of those games couldhave been wins, and one of those
could have advanced us to the finalfour, Bitter said.
That just shows us how goodwe can be if we focus for all 60minutes of every game.

Quite frankly, North Carolina baseball coach Mike Fox tries notto think about whats gone.
The 213 wins and just 62 losses in the past four seasons alone. The multiple trips to Omaha, Neb., and the College World Series. The two runner-up finishes and the numerous MLB draft picks.
And perhaps most importantly, the top two-thirds of his startingrotation, Adam Warren and Alex White, who Fox will somehow tryand replace this season.
Because, as Fox admits, even with hitting wizards Dustin Ackleyand Kyle Seager manning the plate in the past, the UNC offensecomes and goes. But his starting pitching, well, thats what histeam is predicated on.
This year, Fox isnt quite sure what he has. Statistics and rank-ings say hes got perhaps the finest 2007 high school graduate inthe nation leading his rotation with Matt Harvey. And inexperience
with his starters says hes got a converted reliever trudging in as hisNo. 2 man with Colin Bates.
In fact, all thats known is how unknown this season could turnout especially with the teams starting pitching.
And for Bates, thats excitement in itself.I think its going to be a lot of fun for people to watch, he said.
Something we do have, we have a lot of strikethrowers. Its veryencouraging. A lot of guys look like theyre ready to step up to thechallenge, and Im looking forward to seeing it myself.
Bates, for one, will be getting the chance this season. After red-shirting in 2007 with a blood clot in hi s right shoulder, the now-
junior compiled a 4-4 record during 60 innings of work as a middlereliever last year.
In the past, Fox has had no qualms with inserting Bates dur-ing the toughest predicaments. And as Harvey attests, its alwaysnice having him behind us. But for now, that will no longer bethe case.
During the offseason, Fox sat down with pitching coach ScottForbes and discussed Bates future more specifically pertainingto starting. With no sure-fire freshman coming in who can startimmediately, Fox didnt want to risk too much inexperience withthe starters.
Insert Bates. My preference is to pitch whenever Coach tells me to, Bates
said. But Im looking forward to the opportunity to start if it pres-ents itself. If I have to go back to the bullpen, thats what Ill do.
Harvey, meanwhile, will do no such switching. As the Tar HeelsSunday starter last year, he will be jumping up two rungs in therotation with Warren and White gone.
For many North Carolina fans, its been expected since Harveysheralded schoolboy days hed be the teams No. 1 starter. Heck, he
was Baseball Americas No. 1 high school prospect entering college. And after posting a 7-2 record and 2.79 ERA his freshman season,it seemed Harvey might just verify such thoughts.
But then came his sophomore campaign and an ERA that spikedto 5.40, albeit with another 7-2 record.
It was a rough year, he said. It was mostly mechanical issues Ihad. A lot of people thought I was hurt. It was mostly Id said, megoing through my mechanics and having a little trouble with that.
Maybe not going after the hitter as much as I should.I think I put too much pressure on the year. I had too many
expectations for myself and kind of let those get ahead of meinstead of just going out each day and pitching like I could.
Still, as Fox points out, take out two bad efforts, and Matt Harveydid not have as bad a year as people are trying to make it out.
Harvey did allow seven runs in limited performances againstDuke and N.C. State. But contrarily, he pitched perhaps UNCs
biggest game of the year Fox says as much against BostonCollege. With a Coastal Division crown and a national NCAA seedlikely on the line, the then-sophomore pitched an absolute gem:allowing one run in eight and two-thirds innings.
Its a trend Harvey will hope to continue this year, and if hekeeps the distractions to a minimum hes eligible once more forthe MLB draft after being a third-round selection his senior yearof high school he definitely could.
Matts an incredible talent and is capable of keeping us in everygame he pitches in, Fox said. Weve constantly talked to Mattabout the (MLB draft) process and the things he can control. When
youre told in high school that youre this and that. If youre notcareful those things can distort the real purpose of what playing thegame is. You do put too much pressure on yourself. Its a growingprocess, and its some maturity on Matts part.
Yet, all Matt has to do is step back and look at those two guys(Warren and White) and say, This is how you do it.
Fox wont have either Warren or White around for such lessons,
but Harvey and Bates say theyve taken any past advice to heart.Theyll have to. Its their rotation now.
All eyes are going to be on our pitchers and how we can go outand pitch, especially our starters, Fox said.

North Carolina baseball has madeOmaha, Neb., its temporary residence comeevery June.
The Tar Heels have established them-selves in the College World Series afterfour consecutive trips to the nationaltournament.
With that resume, its tough to imagineUNC being the last of six ACC teams inBaseball Americas Top 25 poll.
Coastal Division foes Virginia, GeorgiaTech and Miami were all picked ahead of theTar Heels in the national poll. In the ACC
coaches poll, UVa. and Ga. Tech nabbed thetop two spots.
UNC received one first-place vote in thecoaches poll.
I know our league is as good this year asit has ever been top to bottom, UNC coachMike Fox said. We have to go to Miami andUVa. and thats gonna present all types ofchallenges for us.
Virginia won the ACC Championship lastseason and coach Brian OConner gave UNCits lone first-place vote.
But the Tar Heels wont have to worryabout the Cavaliers until mid-May in the next-to-last series before the ACC Tournament,
which will be held in Greensboro. The pressing issue is how to fill holes left
by top-15 MLB draft picks Dustin Ackleyand Alex White.
Ackley is UNCs only three-time All-American and was recently named thedecades best hitter in collegiate baseball byRivals.com.
You will never fill that hole, Fox said ofAckley. He might be the best hitter out-side of B.J. Surhoff thats ever played here.No one player is gonna walk in and fill hisshoes.
Sophomore Levi Michael may be thebest candidate to control offensive produc-tion for Foxs team like Ackley did in the lastfour years. Michael, who graduated earlyfrom high school to play last year for theTar Heels, started in 65 of UNCs 66 gamesat second base.
Michael generated 57 RBIs and had thesecond-most home runs (13) of any fresh-man in the programs history.
Seth Baldwin may serve as a dark horsefor the teams slugging. Baldwins stats fromhis freshman campaign last year arentimpressive at first glance, but they include
a .500 batting average and four RBIs in thepostseason.
Whites absence will greatly be felt inthe pitching rotation. He fanned 121 bat-ters in 16 appearances for the Tar Heelslast season.
Fox said that he has yet to settle on adefinitive rotation that will include ColinBates, Matt Harvey and Patrick Johnson.
Harvey finished with a 7-2 record forUNC last season, starting in 13 games. Batesand Johnson combined for six wins whileBates gave up the fewest home runs (2) ofany Tar Heel pitcher that logged over 50innings of work.
All we want out of those three guys is tostay healthy and when its your turn, give usfive or six innings of strike throwing, Foxsaid.

The UNC womens softball teamhas adopted a new mantra for the2010 season: attack.
No more playing defense ordefending leads the Tar Heels
want to get after the competitionand not let up.
We have bought into a newphilosophy this year that we arenot going to hold anything back,
junior catcher Brittany McKinneysaid. We are all about attackingand being aggressive this year.
With a good mix of veteranleadership and young talent, theTar Heels attack could be lethalto their competition. Six positionplayers return to a team that fin-ished third in the ACC in 2009 andmade the NCAA Tournament forthe seventh year in a row.
In the tournament, the Tar Heelslost to Georgia twice in the ChapelHill regional and finished 47-13 on
the season.Last season, coach Donna
Papas club looked primed to cap-ture the ACC title for the first timesince 2001 but fell short down thestretch.
The Tar Heels enjoyed a 23-game winning streak last seasonas they headed toward the ACCTournament atop the ACC leader-
board, but lost three straight gamesto eventual champion Georgia Techto round out the regular seasonand were bounced from the ACC
Tournament in the semifinals byFlorida State.
This season, the team wasranked No. 19 in the USA Todaypreseason poll and was picked tofinish third in the ACC by leaguecoaches. They do not plan on fall-ing short again. However, much ofthis seasons success depends on thecontributions of incoming players.
Luckily, Papa has one of the top
players in the country returning to
lead the team.Danielle Spaulding might be the
most well-rounded softball playerin the country, as she is both an aceon the mound and a scoring threatat the plate.
The senior from RanchoCucamonga, Calif., led the nationlast year with 14.3 strikeoutsper seven innings and posted arecord of 20-4 in the circle and anearned run average of 1.44. At bat,Spaulding led the team in homeruns with 12 and had 45 runs bat-
ted in while posting a .311 battingaverage.
This year Spaulding hopes to build on her success by addinga few new pitches to her alreadydominant fastball.
I have picked a couple newpitches that I had not had last
year, Spaulding said. It will besomething that the batters wont
be expecting.
Last season Spaulding teamed
with Lisa Norris to form one ofthe countrys most dangerousone-two pitching combinations. But Norris graduated, whichmeans Papa is looking for areplacement or replacements for Norris.
Lisa and Danny were a toughcombination last year, Papa said. But we have Amber Johnson
back from redshirt and havingConstance Orr back from last year
will help out a lot.If the Tar Heels can get out
of their hitters what they expectfrom the pitching, then it could bea very productive year. And, as faras expectations go, the team is notlimiting itself on where it can gothis season.
On a smaller step we want towin the ACC, Spaulding said. Butour ultimate goal is getting to theCollege World Series and winningthe College Series.

The North Carolina mens golf team is looking tohave a successful second half of the year after an up-and-down fall semester.
We did some good things, got into the winners
circle in the first tournament, coach John Inmansaid, but we had some guys struggle. The team started off the season in September
by winning the Maryland Intercollegiate as juniorHenry Zaytoun III finished the tournament tied forthe individual win.
However, the following three tournaments of thefall semester ended with less impressive finishes. Theteam finished 13th, ninth and sixth in 15 team fields.
The team finished the fall portion of the seasonwith a 31-25 record, compiled of all the teams UNCbeat and lost to in the four tournaments. The TarHeels need at least a .500 record to qualify for aninvitation to the NCAA Regionals in May.
UNC is led by Zaytoun III and Jack Fields. After 12rounds played, only a single stroke separates the toptwo players. The duo finished the fall with the thirdand fourth lowest average scores, respectively, out ofanyone in the ACC with at least 10 rounds played.
The fall half of the season ended in October, andwith the spring season not starting until March, theteam will have a long break from tournaments to
work on their game. Its a good break for some guys who havent been
playing as well to get some things in order, Inmansaid.
The team has five more tournaments, starting withthe Seahawk Intercollegiate in Wilmington on March
1, prior to the ACC Championship at the end of April. Were looking at a schedule we can definitely besuccessful with, Fields said.
Zaytoun III said that to succeed, regardless of theschedule, the team must work on its consistency.
Fields said that the team also has to work on theirpreparation this spring.
As a team we need to be more focused and moreprepared, Field said. We got off to rough starts and
we need to be prepared the first morning to go outand start getting birdies.

The North Carolina womens golf team is comingoff a career year, but new coach Jan Mann still hasher work cut out for her.
Mann, who coached at UNC-Wilmington from 1994
to 2002 and at Virginia from 2002 to 2007, inherits ateam that placed seventh at the NCAA Championshiplast spring, the best finish in UNC history.
But three starters from that team are gone, andthe current roster includes two freshmen and atransfer student from Auburn.
We did lose three starters and we do have to fillthose spots, but the team has really stepped up,Mann said. I am certainly confident that we willmake it through regionals and on to the NCAAs.
With the talent on this team, we have the opportu-nity to go far.
The only senior on the team is Kate Thomas, afour-year UNC starter who Mann called one of the
best ball-strikers she has ever seen. What I bring to the table is leadership by exam-ple, Thomas said. But I also give people pushes
when it needs to be done, and Im there when theywant me to be.
Sophomore Catherine ODonnell, who was nameda team co-captain, is also ready to be a leader.
Some people are made to do it and some arent, and it comes naturally to me, ODonnell said. Ivetraveled and been successful, so people look up tome because Ive done it before.
Mann said she believed that with the help of theirveteran teammates, the less experienced players wouldbe able to significantly contribute to the team.
It will be difficult to play as well at nationalsbecause of the younger team, Thomas said. But Ialso believe it can be done.
In the end, Mann said, the early growing painsof the young Tar Heels shouldnt hurt them toomuch. The ACC Championship, NCAA Regionalsand NCAA Championship will be the only tourna-ments that matter.
We certainly want to do well in everything elsefor the rankings, Mann said. But those are the ulti-mate three tournaments right there.

From the highest rafter in the back of the Koury Natatoriumhangs a long white banner. Thesign, filled with minuscule light-
blue print, seems easily over-looked.
But for one man, it doesnt gounnoticed.
There was some great successin the past and Im wishing for
some of those successes to be partof what we do this year, NorthCarolina swimming and divingcoach Rich DeSelm said.
We havent won very many ACCtitles and theres a whole lot of titlesmentioned on those banners upthere.
With only the ACC and NCAAchampionships left on the sched-ule, both teams are diving head-first into the final races of the sea-son.
During ACC Championship
swims in mid-February, in addi-tion to the team effort, the TarHeels will focus on reachingNCAA qualifying times. Last
year North Carolina sent ninewomen and five men to the NCAAChampionship.
UNC will be able to bring atotal of 18 men and 18 women tothe conference swimming and div-ing championships held in ChapelHill. Swimmers account for a wholeperson, while divers account for ahalf.
Its been over a decade sincethe men won their last title whilethe women are looking forwardto redeeming their 2007 ACCChampionship win.
It would be huge, sophomoreLaura Moriarty said. It wouldshow so many people that we area top school and we can compete
with anyone in the country.Moriarty, f irst on North
Carolinas depth chart in four dif-ferent events, is likely to make asplash in the ACC Championship
meet. Along with Moriarty, juniorKatura Harvey and freshman CarlySmith are key swimmers for this
years squad.Last year during her rookie
season, Moriarty finished secondin the conference in the 200-yard
breaststroke.Junior Tommy Wyher will look
to continue his streak in both the100-yard backstroke and 100-yard
butterfly in this years conferencemeet.
Last year, he took first place
in both events, setting two ACCrecords, two UNC records andachieving career bests in each.
An ACC Championship win inthe 100-yard backstroke this sea-
son would be his third straighttriumph.
He showed what he could dolast year and hes trained even
better now, DeSelm said. Hesdefending champion and hes agreat racer. He hates to lose, so hesa guy you want on your side.
Fellow juniors Chip Petersonand Tyler Harris will be in thehunt for an individual title as well.Peterson holds the school recordin the 500-meter butterfly.
Although both teams lost toVirginia in January, UNC swim-mers are looking forward to
hosting the championship meet. They will be matched against theCavaliers UNCs only ACC loss and will have the chance to adda 2010 title to the record books.
The Tar Heels will be the under-dogs, but dont count them out.DeSelm certainly isnt.
Can they do it? Itd have to bea real special weekend, DeSelmsaid.
But thats the great thing aboutathletics, nobody hands anybodyanything. Anybody that thinks theoutcome is set is making a hugemistake.

In a sport as physical as wres-tling, injuries are expected, notunfortunate.
But even in a sport where bumpsand bruises are as much a part ofthe game as mat burn and cutting
weight, this years Tar Heels areunusually unlucky.
Injuries, UNC coach C.D. Mocksaid. Ive never seen so many.
At the very first meet, Mock losthis starting 125-pounder, NickShields, for the season after thesophomore broke his jaw in twoplaces.
Three weeks later, 165-poundsenior Ben Fiacco joined Shields onthe permanent disabled list with aknee injury.
A month after that, the injury bug struck again. This time thevictim was Nick Stabile, also outfor the year with a knee injuryafter being ranked No. 15 among
149-pound wrestlers in the pre-season.
And thats just the starters.Im down to 16 healthy guys in
the team, and thats hard becausethey need workout partners, Mocksaid of a roster that began the sea-son with 31 healthy wrestlers.
All of the injuries have causedthe Tar Heels to struggle. They are4-7-1 in dual meets and just 2-3 inthe ACC.
But the depleted UNC lineupstill houses some serious talent
in the form of 157-pound juniorThomas Scotton, who is currentlyranked No. 10 in his weight class, and 197-pound senior DennisDrury.
Though they started the seasonon a roll, the pair has cooled off as

Going into the 2010 season, the gymnastics team is returninghome.
With renovations to CarmichaelArena complete, the Tar Heels arelooking forward to a season thatincludes several home meets.
This season marks the first timethe gymnastics team will hosthome tournaments in two years, coach Derek Galvin said.
The only girls who have expe-rienced competing here are our
juniors and seniors, and it will be
nice to have the seniors competethere for their final season, he said.
In the victory at William & Maryon Jan. 24, Galvin said the teamlooked confident and composed,
but the last event balance beam was not up to optimal level.
In practice, Galvin said a majorpriority is improving the level ofexecution and quality of routines.
Seniors Kara Wright andChristine Nguyen agreed.
Since the last meet weve kindof been working on polishing ourroutines, Wright said. Now weknow we can make them, so its allabout our confidence in ourselvesand in our teammates.
Nguyen added that details likehitting handstands, staying in
bounds and sticking landings will
be important for a winning season.Last year, UNC finished third in theEast Atlantic Gymnastics League.
This year, four freshmen joinedthe Tar Heels, and some have
already been competing.Freshman Michelle Ikoma com-
peted on vault and floor exercise atWilliam & Mary. She said the tran-sition into college gymnastics tookher a semester to adjust, but she isready for this season.
Im just loving competing incollege, she said. Its so muchmore fun.
The team is hosting its firsthome meet on Feb. 14 againstMaryland. Wright said the teamhas already seen improvementsince its last meet, and she expectsthe teams performance to get bet-
ter as the season continues. The plan is to peak at the end of
the season at EAGL Championshipsand regionals, and we can makehistory, Wright said.
of late. Before his victory against
N.C. State, Drury had his firstconsecutive losses all season, andScotton lost three straight boutsafter winning 22 of his first 24.
In order for his stars to turnthings around the rest of the way,Mock believes they will have tostop wrestling not to lose.
When guys get ranked realhigh, they start wrestling to defendthe ranking, and its the worst pos-sible thing you can do, he said.
As the team looks toward theACC and (for those who qualify)
NCAA individual championshiptournaments, redshirt freshmanZiad Haddad hopes to continuehis ascent to the top of the heavy-
weight heap.A national champion in high
school, Haddad came to UNC with
high expectations but missed the
first half of this season due to aca-demic ineligibility.
Since then he has gone 8-5 witha pair of close losses to No. 9 ScottSteele of Navy.
When the time came and Iwas able to get back out on themat, I was extremely excited,Haddad said. I couldnt wait toget out there and show what Icould do.
Like the rest of his team-mates, Haddad is eyeing the ACCTournament, which offers an auto-
matic NCAA Tournament bid tothe winner of each weight class, asa shot at redemption.
Everyone has an opportunity tomake it to nationals, he said.
It doesnt matter who you areor what you did.
