If you’re one of the lucky few to be part of the walk, I’m willing to wager the naming rights on my firstborn that you’ve heard these words before: “Walking to Rocking the Daisies?” “Are you insane?” “How far is it?” and afterwards: “What was it like?”

The last one’s easy to answer. How can a two-day adventure with extremely diverse, yet likeminded party folk – on their way to a music fest – not be mind-blowingly awesome?

Strutting into its 5th year, the Fruit & Veg City Walking the Daisies trek is an event where lasting friendships and memories are made while giving back to our planet and its people. Founders Nathan Daniel Heller and Greg Nicolson, together with event manager Travis ‘Traz’ Hyde of culturetalent have really put the Walk to its paces over the years.

Day one sees us starting at Kreeftebaai 4,5km north of Bloubergstrand, with a motivated beach cleanup sponsored

by Ocean Minded, meandering on to Melkbosstrand and then Silwerstroom. The Silwerstroomstrand campsite is our halfway mark and a sight for sore eyes at the end of a long day’s walk. Walkers take the initiative to lead activities such as an icy dip in the Atlantic, beach yoga and a massage tent to warm those sore muscles. We also have some great musical activities and after a hearty local cuisine fireside dinner prepared by community chefs from Mamre, we are treated to some acoustic entertainment by TouchWood before Walkers start fading very quickly - and what’s better than crawling up in a tent with the sound of crashing waves lulling you to sleep?

Day 2 sees an early start with breakfast on the run and a few hours later, after traipsing up the West Coast and through the most diverse floral kingdom in the world, Walkers take to planting trees at Mamre Primary School with Greenpop! And before you know it, after a quick hop, skip and a jump over the hill, 100 excited young revelers are descending on the festival grounds at Cloof Wine Estate for Rocking the Daisies!

We’ve been blessed with incredible support from progressive brands and partners who jumped in without hesitation to walk the talk. Fruit & Veg City has been invaluable in making our adventure possible since 2009. This year was no different. From the Facebook

registration app (with a discount voucher for their new Tokai Food Lover’s Market) to providing sustenance for a hundred walkers en-route, they’ve been with us every step of the way. Thanks to their generous support on the trail, the rest stops are plentiful and overnight catering legendary.

We’d also like to thank our other partners – Hemporium, New Balance, Flexfit, Ocean Minded, Greenpop, The Sunflower Fund, WWF and the DCCP for their amazing initiatives and support on our 60km trek. Read more on the following pages.

The Fruit & Veg City Walking the Daisies initiative is not just about the people, nature, brands and bands. It’s about bringing it all together and for the benefit of all – making a difference while having a good time.

We’d like to dedicate this walk to our

fellow walker and all around legend,

Lincoln “Nightfoxx” Loxton. Your

amazing energy will be missed. Rest in

peace, dear friend.

WE CAME,WE SAW,WE CLEANEDAnyone looking for a pristine beach, anywhere in the world, may as well forget it.

Flotsam and jetsam, as well as carelessly discarded rubbish create an eyesore and endangers sea life and aquatic birds along every few square meters of sea and shore.

But there is hope.

As part of our environmental action, Fruit and Veg City Walking the Daisies have partnered with Ocean Minded to facilitate a beach cleanup on the first day or our adventure. It wasn’t too hard to convince them to come on board. Ocean minded have been organising beach cleanups around the world since their beginning in 1996. Through these events, they’re fostering a culture of conservation with their brand and educating customers on the importance of leaving beaches in a better condition than they were found. Every bit helps and if we as a global community pool our efforts, we can make pollution a thing of the past.

As a company, Ocean Minded utilises recycled and sustainable materials in their footwear, apparel, and accessories whenever possible, and consistently develops new ways in which to do so. Those that have opted to purchase the discounted product pack before the walk will be stoked with their new pair of Ocean Minded flip-flops, just in time for the festival.

There was once a wise old headmaster at a school in northern Zululand. He was at times a gruff and grumpy character, and at others friendly and cheerful, but for the most part he was a textbook headmaster. His motto in life, and he ended off each Monday morning assembly address with it, was “Teamwork makes a dream work.” Yes, the kids would scoff and chuckle, but they always knew, beyond the cheesiness, this was one of those basic universal truths that

everyone can understand and agree on, regardless of gender or nationality or ethnicity.

This year, Walking The Daisies embarks on their 5th expedition, walking 60km over 2 days from Cape Town to Rocking The Daisies in Darling, and encountering along the way the unique biodiversity of the region, considered to be one of the highest priority conservation areas in the country. is the smallest, but richest plant kingdom in the world. It is one of only six plant kingdoms across the globe and home to more than 9000 plant species of which 6200 are found nowhere else in the world. This constituency is being protected, promoted and sustainably developed by a like-minded group of organisations called the Dassenberg Coastal Catchment Partnership.

Considering that there is an estimated 200 threatened plant species that occur in the Dassenberg Coastal Catchment corridor, and with hopes to reintroduce game such as Eland and Red Hartebeest, this dream-team is one that nature needs on her side, and is comprised of pillars of strength such as the City of Cape Town, WWF, Cape Nature, Table Mountain Fund, Wilderness Foundation, Cape West Coast Biosphere, SAN Parks and SANBI.

While Walkers will be enjoying the beauty that the wonderful Cape nature has to offer, they will also be adding to it. During the Friday lunch-stop in Mamre, 100 walkers are planting 50 trees at Mamre Primary School in

collaboration with the pioneering team of the treevolution, Greenpop, who recently travelled to Zambia (a country with one of the highest deforestation rates in the world) where they, alongside 100 local and international volunteers, planted 4135 trees in schools, farming communities, forests and World Heritage sites.

One doesn’t have to gaze too far into the future to realize that the connection between mankind and nature demands teamwork for the sake of our survival. Nature will flourish without man, but a decline of ecological systems is at the detriment of our own species. We are not in a relationship with nature, but rather a part of it. We are a singular unit, made up of smaller sub-groups that work together to see the vision of a sustainable future realized. There is only one way, and that is working together.

Because like an old man once said, teamwork makes a dream work.

There’s a little more afoot this year on the annual march to Rocking the Daisies.

100 Energetic walkers are not just donning their New Balance and walking all the way from Cape Town to Darling. In a bid to give something back to the community and environment, Walkers will be stopping along the way in Mamre, a community near the festival location, to plant 50 trees at Mamre Primary School with Greenpop – including some Rhus and Acasia as well as a few Olive trees which grow well in the area..

Greenpop is a social business that believes greening and sustainable living can be fun, POPular and accessible for all. They believe in inspiring a greener, more conscious, inclusive movement and

do this through tree planting projects, green events, education, social media, voluntourism and activating people to start DOING!

Keep an eye out for their projects. It might germinate some ideas and you could find yourself traveling across borders and cultures, even in your own city to help grow awareness.

This initiative, conceptualized and organized by culturetalent, is supported by the Dassenberg Coastal Catchment Partnership and WWF-SA.

Join the Treevolution – and walk the talk!

Whats all the fuss about a plant?

THE WORLDS MOST WANTEDSince we’re planting some indigenous and fruit trees on the Walk to benefit the Mamre community, we find it ridiculous that you will get thrown in jail for planting mankind’s most useful crop.

As the premier eco-resource, no other can equal hemp in providing us with so many products with so little impact on the environment. It grows like a weed and can reach 4 metres in 4-6 months. It also responds well to organic agriculture.

Hemp fibres derived from the outer stalk are three times stronger than cotton and possess anti-bacterial properties. These are used to make textiles, paper, insulation, bio-composites, ropes and more. Hemp textiles also have superior UV protection, so if you’re one of those rocking an official Walking the Daisies T-shirt, pat yourself on the back for wearing a shirt that helped save water, energy, land, agro-chemicals and know that you are being well protected from the sun.

Hemp can also be used to make hempcrete (a natural building material), be compressed into chipboard, made into ethanol bio-fuel, and is used as

animal bedding and for soaking up oil or chemical spills. The seeds are high in an easily digestible protein and contain the optimum range of omega fatty acids for the human body. They can be used for nutrition, and hemp seed oil is used in foods, body-care products, paints and varnishes and even bio-diesel. Think of all the jobs that can be created to manufacture these! Come find out more and support Hemporium at the Hemp Stage in the Green Village. And may your legs still have the energy to party hard and tread lightly.
