LIGHT UP ROTARY

A WELL CARED FOR PROJECTGetting today’s young people to do any thing that takes effort is a chore, but Pat Janes saw the potential of Glendora Library’s, The Battle of the Books to help assist Rotary’s emphasis on literature, so she put her creative efforts behind this program, early on, and helped accomplish some remarkable results. A surprising number of teams form early in the year for this competition. It is now in its seventh year, and is scheduled to take place in a packed Bidwell forum on October 9th. There are currently 15 three person teams signed up, having carefully read the assigned number of five books, and ready to answer increasingly difficult questions about the subject matter, until all teams have been eliminated save one who will win. Librarian, and fellow member, Janet Stone recommends it for a fun evening.

Horace Walpole, the 4th Earl of Oxford is reported to have stated:"The world is a comedy to those that think; a tragedy to those that feel."

! A ROTARY MOMENT

On 7/29/14 this column wrote about the scattered clubs within and around Russia. The first club after the cold war was established in Moscow, during the 1990’s. The 2001-02 District Governor of these scattered clubs was Wanda J. Cooksey of Douglas, Alaska. She was quoted as stating at the time, “It takes me three days just to get to my clubs in Russia.” Your editor went to the RI website and discovered that there are now 9 clubs within the city of Moscow. I was not able to discover how many times that district territory has been revised in the intervening 14 years, but I’ll bet it is in constant revision.

President Joe poses with our two guests today. Karen Ramirez, new to the Friends Group, and Jen Ahlgrim.

Jack Gordon got caught up in a lively fining session conducted by Gene Morrill, as did everyone who were not wearing their Rotary pin, ( almost everyone), plus Karin Davis, Joe Babineau, Keith Hilliard, Gordie Norman, D. J. Jafari, Bob Kuhn, and Kevin Haras, (who was excused). Marc Chaldu mugs for club photographer Guadalupe Corder, to note the addition of a baby boy to their family recently. The requisite passing of the basket was initiated and now Mark has to come up with matching funds for the little guy’s first bank account.

GUILT BY ASSOCIATION

Gordie Norman displays a picture for which he was fined $50 in that other club where Diane is a member. Gordie likes to represent Rotary in Diane’s bailiwick to keep us informed on what is happening in Kiwanis. Great fun is thus created in both clubs, as long as the Norman bank account holds out.

ROTARY’S PEACE INITIATIVE

Rotary's most significant effort to wage peace is the Rotary Peace Centers program, established in 2002. Each year, the program trains some of the world's most dedicated and brightest professionals, preparing them to promote national and international cooperation and to resolve conflict. They include graduates of a two-year master's degree program and a three-month professional certificate program at Rotary's partner universities.

Today, more than 900 peace fellows are applying their expertise in various fields. They're settling border conflicts in West Africa, developing aid programs at the World Bank, drafting legislation to protect exploited children in Brazil, providing security for U.S. diplomats, and many other career paths devoted to peace.

! ! A LIFETIME OF SERVICEIt’s always good to be able to use a picture of our elder statesman, George Mcgill. George is a shining example of Rotary service, even during the many years since his retirement. At the beginning of that retirement George and Laura Belle moved to some family property on Balboa Island, and George faithfully drove to Glendora for the Rotary meeting, keeping a better attendance record than many members who lived locally. He has also kept his hand in service of some kind, as opposed to members who give up service when they retire. For years, George faithfully sent birthday cards to members, (and their spouses) clear up to his 100th birthday. He is shown here at that celebration two years ago, at the Glendora Country Club. George continues his service at the back table.

! ! ! ! ! HOPE ON THE HORIZON

As a hearing impaired person your editor knows the feelings of isolation it can engender. Imagine you are a newborn baby in a third world area like Mongolia, where screenings for hearing are seldom done on newborns. But Dr. Batjargal of the Rotary club of Ulaanbaatar Peace Avenue, Mongolia, believes this is preventable. She states “If we can detect hearing loss before babies turn six months old...we can give them good early intervention programs that will allow them to communicate normally at school and with friends... Instead of waiting for the government to address this problem, our Rotary club has decided to solve it.”

! ! ! BEATING THE ODDSGarry Warr has a method of beating the odds for how many times he comes forward with the winning ticket. This time he only drew a 10 card for his trouble.
