Welcome to Resurrection!

W e extend a warm welcome to each one present. As we unite together in worship, may

we experience together the grace and mercy of our God through his life-giving Word and sacraments. Guests, below is some information that may help us host you well in the Lord’s new house. Please let us know if we can assist you in any way.

Visitor Information

W orship at Resurrection Lutheran Church follows the historic liturgy of the Church. Our Worship

service is designed to give our Savior thanks for the salvation He won for us. Lutheran worship is really a conversation between God and his people. He speaks to us in His Word; we praise Him and respond to Him in song. We confess our sins and needs; He provides the forgiveness Jesus accomplished at the cross, and helps us with our individual needs.

Worship Information

W orship will follow the service folder, guiding us in our dialogue with the Lord. Feel free to participate at whatever level you are comfortable. Where indicated you

will find some of the hymns and psalms in the Christian Worship hymnal (the red book under your chair.) Whenever the words are printed in bold, the congregation is welcome to join in responding or singing. May God bless us as we place Him at the center of our worship.

Bathrooms: Down the main hall, across from the drinking fountains.

Child's Room: The room located at the rear of the church serves as a cry room or nursing room (with rocker). The door is located in the gathering area.

Children’s Bulletin: special bulletins designed for young children are available. Leaders: Vicar Eric Melso Pianist: Lisa Hermanson Cantor: Ruth Pudlo

Personal Prayers for Worship are found on pages 10-11 in the front of the hymnal located under the pew chairs.

Joel D. Otto

“We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.”

In the early centuries of the Christian church, it was common for Christians to gather regu-larly where their dead were entombed. The purpose was to remember those fellow Chris-tians who had died in the Lord—especially martyrs who died for their faith—and rejoice in the hope of the resurrection. In fact, during one severe bout of persecution, Christians were banned from visiting their cemeteries. The hope of the resurrection was very real for the early church.

Our 21st-century world does its best to put off death. It’s obsessed with diet and exercise, medication, surgery, therapy. All of this can serve to mask the reality of death. Death is un-natural. It is ugly and nasty. It is what sinful humanity has earned and deserves (Romans 5:12; 6:23). No amount of embalming, make-up, or well-manicured cemetery lawns can change that fact. Everyone faces the death of loved ones. Everyone will face his or her own death. Death is an emotionally-charged subject, even if most people don’t want to think or talk about its reality. No one escapes it.

As Christians, we have to face death’s harshness. We also do our best to prolong our lives. Many Christians strive to care for the bodies God has given us by eating healthy, exercising regularly, and making use of the blessings of medicines. Yet we recognize the ultimate futil-ity of these measures. No matter what we might do to live longer, we will all eventually face death—unless Jesus returns first. And our journey will also include dealing with the loss of loved ones.

But we react differently. The death of a Christian, while a sad time because we lose the companionship of a loved one, becomes a victory celebration. Our own death, while scary and unpleasant because of possible pain and an uncertain process, is the way God brings us to the heaven he was won for us and prepared for us (John 14:1-3). He gave his Son into death that “whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Je-sus is “the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in [him] will live, even though they die” (John 11:25). Jesus “has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” (2 Timothy 1:10).

That is why we “do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope” (1 Thessaloni-ans 4:13). We are confident that when we Christians die and are buried, our bodies will be raised and glorified when Jesus returns in glory (1 Corinthians 15:51-54; Philippians 3:20,21). Because our Redeemer lives, we will enjoy a new eternal, heavenly home where we see God face to face and enjoy life without suffering or sadness (Job 19:25-27; Revelation 21:1-4). With Christians down through the centuries, “we look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.”

Advent by Candlelight - December 6th Advent by Candlelight will come sooner than you think! Advent by Candlelight is a special night; a night to prepare ourselves for the busy Christmas season and set our mindset and priorities to the best gift ever given, God's own Son, Jesus, our Savior from sin. This year's theme will be Hark the Glad Sound. The date is set for December 6th, at 6:30pm. Think of someone you could invite, and join us for a night of fellowship, devotions, and songs. You won't want to miss it. Save The Date!! Our annual adult RLC Christmas party is scheduled for 12/18 at 7:00 pm in Fitchburg. Details and sign up to follow in late November. Please consider joining us for this wonderful fellowship opportunity! Christmas for Kids! Christmas for Kids is scheduled for Saturday December 19th in the morning from 10:30-12:30. We are still looking for volunteers to help run the program. Group leaders, snack or-ganizers, craft organizers, and registration helpers are needed. If you'd like to help out just contact Vicar Melso. He can give you more information. [email protected] Attention All Ladies : The Pathways to Christ Retreat is coming in Spring!

The Pathways to Christ Retreat will be held in Oshkosh as usual, and the weekend retreat is focusing on Psalm 141:2 Let my prayers rise before you as incense, the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice”. On Friday night Aneela Jordan will open the retreat by sharing her personal journey that she and her family have experience in Pakistan. Find out how her faith and her prayer life helped her endure the struggles that she and her family faced. On Saturday we will continue our prayer journey with the patriarchs of the Old Testament and then exam-ine Jesus as both our Sacrificial Lamb and our Great High Priest in the New Testament. Pas-tor Leon Ehlert and Pastor Dan Cole will give us visual insights of what these prayer sights look like today in the Holy Land. Naomi Schmidt will then walk us through our daily journey with prayer. On Sunday Pastor Ehlert will share with us a Bible Study on the Lord’s Prayer and then lead us in worship.

I have attended this retreat several years in a row now, and plan to attend again this year, God willing. If you are interested the price is quite reasonable. If you want to room with three other women (two in each queen bed) the cost is only $50.00 per person for the hotel and the retreat is only $80.00. That is an unbelievable deal for two nights and days of hearing God’s Word and growing together, as women of the Word. (Meals are included, too!)

There will be registration sheets in the hall for you to use. Questions? Contact Ruth Pudlo at 262.389.9317 or [email protected]

Wine Bottles? The Advent by Candlelight committee is collecting wine bottles made out of blue glass. If you have any, please put them in the box near the bulletin board. We will be collecting them until Thanksgiving. Helpers and Donations Needed For Pre-K Thanksgiving Lunch Resurrection Lutheran Preschool will be hosting its annual Thanksgiving lunch for all children enrolled and their families. It’s one of our favorite events! But, in order to make the day a success, we need help from our members. Lunch is set for Tuesday, November 24th at 11:30am. Four helpers are needed earlier that morning (9:30/10am) to help set up decorations, start prepping and warming up food, setting out plates, utensils, and drinks, etc. Helpers are also asked to stick around and help with clean-up (around 12:30pm). We are also in need of at least 1 or 2 more turkeys (at least 20lbs each). Turkeys must be cooked the day before, shredded, and put into a crockpot for easy warm-up Tuesday morning. Meat can be dropped off Monday or Tuesday morning. Other food items will be provided by our preschool families. Please consider helping! A sign-up sheet is located on the church bulletin board. Katie will be happy to answer any questions. RLC Book Club - November 17th Please join us for the RLC book club at 7PM in the youth room at church for discussion and fellowship. This month’s book is: “Flight Behavior” by Barbara Kingsolver The Educational Support Committee (ELC) The ELC is currently seeking two people to fill vacancies on our committee. The committee exists to support the growing 3K and 4K Preschool programs and teachers at Resurrection Lutheran Preschool. Meetings are usually held once-a-month during the school year. If interested, please contact Mike Korth at 845-5627, or [email protected]. Scrip Card Program If you get gas or shop at Kwik Trip or eat at Culver's and want to help our youth group, consider purchasing "scrip" gift cards through the RLC scrip card program. The youth group earns 10% of the total amount of cards purchased. If you'd like to purchase cards, please fill out an order form (located behind the small wooden "treasure" box setting on the ledge to your right when you enter the church) and put it, along with your payment, in the box. Checks should be made payable to "Resurrection Lutheran Youth Group." If you need the cards by a specific date or have any questions, please talk directly to Becky Deegan (576-5252). Note regarding Kwik Trip cards only: Becky typically waits to order until she has at least two Kwik Trip card orders so that we do not have to pay the almost $10 shipping fee. Thank you!

Announcements & Upcoming Events November 9th - Tenth Anniversary Facility Planning It was suggested that we remember and celebrate the tenth anniversary of our original facility at Resurrection. The facility was dedicated December 18, 2005. That means the 10th anniversary is coming up soon. A gathering will be held on Monday, November 9 at 6.30 p.m. at church for anyone who would like to help plan the celebration. Talk to pastor for more information. “Thanksgiving” Meals for families in our community Please consider providing a Thanksgiving meal to a family who has a need for this in our community. You can pick up a list of the needed items on the bulletin board in the hallway, put these items in a very strong grocery bag along with $15.00 in cash in an envelope to pay for the turkey. Please leave these bag on the floor in the church office. The meals will be given to the food pantry on November 15th. If you have any questions feel free to contact Sue at the church office or [email protected]. Final Exam Care Packages for RLC college students RLC currently has 11 members in college, so we'd like to offer them a little support during their final exams. In order to do this, we'd like to collect items to put into care packages that we will send to them. A bin will be set out in the hallway near the bulletin board for the donations. Cash donations are also accepted in order to help defray shipping costs (please place it in the envelope).

Suggested items for you to consider for donation: (we're filling 11 boxes) * Microwave popcorn * Granola or breakfast bars * Instant Hot Chocolate * Instant Oatmeal, small individual size cereal boxes * Fruit snacks, raisins, jerky, dried fruit snack * Crackers, pretzels, trail mix * Instant soup * Candy bars, gum * Rice Krispy treats, cookies

THE WORD

FIRST LESSON AND SERMON TEXT: MALACHI 4:1-2 HCSB

The Day of the LORD 1For indeed, the day is coming, burning like a furnace, when all the arrogant and everyone who commits wickedness will become stubble. The coming day will consume them,” says the LORD of Hosts, “not leaving them root or branches. 2 But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings, and you will go out and playfully jump like calves from the stall. PSALM 90 Refrain

Lord, you have been our dwelling place* throughout all generations.

Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world,* from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by,* or like a watch in the night.

Refrain

People: Amen.

Leader: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.

ANGUS DEI - LAMB OF GOD

ON COMMUNING

Non-alcoholic wine is available for those who desire it. The non-alcoholic wine is white.

The Bible teaches that communing together signifies a oneness in faith, life and worship (1 Cor. 10:16-17). Reception of the Lord's Supper by Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness which does not yet exist and for which we must all pray. It would be unloving of us as a congregation to invite visitors to the Lord’s table. We would not be so presumptuous as to make any visitor take a stand with our doctrine and practice without first providing opportunity to explore the Bible's teachings with them.(1 Cor. 11:27-29). Our pastor would be happy to explore this unity with you, on the basis of God's Word, so that you might commune with us in the future.

All:

Page 7

You have set our iniquities before you,* our secret sins in the light of your presence.

You turn mortals back to dust.* You sweep them away in the sleep of death.

The length of our days is seventy years— or eighty, if we have the strength;* yet their span is but trouble and sorrow.

Teach us to number our days aright,* that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Refrain Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love,*

that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Refrain SECOND LESSON: HEBREWS 9:24-28 NIV

24 For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence. 25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. 26 Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. VERSE OF THE DAY

Leader: “Alleluia! “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.” Alleluia!” (Matthew 24:42)

GOSPEL LESSON: JOHN 5:19-30 NIV

19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.

24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.

28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned. 30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.

Leader: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise be to You, O Christ.

All: WORDS OF INSTITUTION

Leader: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

The peace of the Lord be with you always.

People: Amen

Leader: We join in the Lord’s Prayer. LORD’S PRAYER

All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

THE SACRAMENT

PREFACE Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. People: It is good and right so to do.

Leader: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who preserves his Church to the end of time when he will come again as king to judge all people and take his own to glory.

Therefore with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song:

Page 9

CONFESSION OF FAITH NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen. Please be seated HYMN OF THE DAY: 382 “My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less” (in the red book under your chair)

SERMON BASED ON: MALACHI 4:1-2

The Day is Coming!

Questions to consider while hearing the sermon:

1. What kind of heat do you prefer; standing two inches away from a bonfire or lying in the sun at the beach?

2. Why were the Israelites complaining to God?

3. What seems unfair about the lives of people who spit in God's face?

4. How are the arrogant and evildoers like stubble?

5. What causes us to have a moment of panic?

6. Why don't we need to panic?

7. How is the Last Day compared to a sunrise?

8. Why do we keep our eyes on the horizon?

9. What news causes us to "playfully jump like calves from the stall"?

10. How can we share our peace with those around us?

For further discussion

Discuss some reasons why it might seem like those who defy God have better lives than we do.

What are some ways we can draw that comparison between the "sun of righteousness" and the "Son of Righteousness"?

When's the last time you "playfully jumped" or "frolicked"?

Talk about some ways you can start a conversation with someone about the hope that you have.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH (special Veteran's day prayer)

Leader: Everlasting Protector and Defender, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 the guns of World War I went silent. To celebrate this armistice a holiday was made of this date. But, the world soon learned that the War to end all Wars was not the end. A series of wars followed with increased efficiency in killing. So the holiday was changed to honor everyone who has served in our nation's Armed Forces. We now call it Veterans Day.

People: We thank you, Lord, for our military veterans. Through them you have provided us with blessings that people around the world envy. Leader: But the presence of our veterans reminds us of your warning that wars and rumors of wars will continue until the end of time.

People: In your mercy, keep war from our shores, and frustrate the plans of all those who look to cause terror. Leader: Lord of the Nations, we ask that you would continue to bless our country with men and women who are willing to go to distant and dangerous places to protect us from those who would do us harm.

People: We pray that you will continue to bless us with veterans who have served faithful and true. Leader: Be with our veterans as they continue their march through life. Protect them from the ambush of sin and the firepower of Satan. Give them the health and strength they need to carry out the missions in life that you have laid before them.

People: Lord, be their shield, their strength, and their guide. Give to them the peace that surpasses all understanding as they place their trust in Jesus. Leader: When their tour of duty in the world is over, give them the order to come home. Bring them to where there are no more wars.

People: Grant that when we are listening to the trumpets being played over their grave, they may be listening to the joyous trumpet call of God and the music of heaven's choirs. Grant this for Jesus' sake. Amen.
