The Proclamation of the Word

First Reading: Acts 2:1-21 ........................ Amelia Foster reading in Afrikaans

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together

in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound

like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house

where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, ap-

peared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them.

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to

speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven

living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered

and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking

in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they

asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And

how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native lan-

guage? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Meso-

potamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia

and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to

Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,

Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them

speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ All were amazed

and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this

mean?’ But others sneered and said, ‘They are filled with

new wine.’

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and

addressed them: ‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusa-

lem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say.

Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only

nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken

through the prophet Joel:

“In the last days it will be, God declares,

that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,

and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,

and your young men shall see visions,

and your old men shall dream dreams.

Even upon my slaves, both men and women,

in those days I will pour out my Spirit;

and they shall prophesy.

And I will show portents in the heaven above

and signs on the earth below,

blood, and fire, and smoky mist.

The sun shall be turned to darkness

and the moon to blood,

before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day.

Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be

saved.”

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 104:25-35 .................................................... Fr Ayoob reading in Hebrew 25 Yonder is the great and wide sea

with its living things too many to number,

creatures both small and great. 26 There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan,

which you have made for the sport of it. 27 All of them look to you

to give them their food in due season. 28 You give it to them; they gather it;

you open your hand,

and they are filled with good things. 29 You hide your face, and they are terrified;

you take away their breath,

and they die and return to their dust. 30 You send forth your Spirit, and they are created;

and so you renew the face of the earth. 31 May your glory, O Lord, endure for ever;

may you rejoice in all your works; 32 you look at the earth and it trembles;

you touch the mountains and they smoke. 33 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;

I will praise my God while I have my being. 34 May these words ¹of mine please you;

I will rejoice in the Lord. 35 Let sinners be consumed out of the earth,

and the wicked be no more.

Bless the Lord, O my soul. Hallelujah!

All say together:

Glory to God, Source of all being,

Eternal Word and Holy Spirit;

As it was in the beginning is now

and shall be for ever. Amen.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:3b-13 ..... Linda Kern reading in Mandarin

Therefore I want you to understand that …. no one can say

‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit.

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and

there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there

are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who acti-

vates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifes-

tation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given

through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another

the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to

another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing

by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to

another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to

another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpreta-

tion of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same

Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit

chooses.

For just as the body is one and has many members, and all

the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is

with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into

one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all

made to drink of one Spirit.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God.

The Gospel John 20:19-23 read in French

Deacon May God be with you

People And also with you

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John

People Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week,

and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were

locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them

and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ After he said this, he showed

them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when

they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with

you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ When he had

said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the

Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven

them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’

Deacon The Gospel of Christ

People Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Sermon ...................................................................................... Fr. Ayoob Adwar

An Affirmation of Faith Celebrant Let us affirm our faith

All You, O God, are supreme and holy.

You create our world and give us life.

Your purpose overarches everything we do.

You have always been with us.

You are God.

You, O God, are infinitely generous,

good beyond all measure.

You came to us before we came to you.

You have revealed and proved

your love for us in Jesus Christ,

who lived and died and rose again.

You are with us now.

You are God.

You, O God, are Holy Spirit.

You empower us to be your gospel in the world.

You reconcile and heal; you overcome death.

You are our God. We worship you. Amen.

Annie Webb reading in Dutch

Generous God, we thank you for the power of your Spirit. We ask

that all your people, and including your Church in all its forms

throughout the world, will be strengthened to love and serve You in

new ways during this time of global Pandemic. May the walls of

division be broken between races, religions, and classes -- between

rich and poor, slave and free, male and female, homosexual and

transgender and heterosexual -- that we might be united in your love

and grace, and serve you without fear.

Sung twice: Veni Sancte Spiritus

Diane Marshall reading in English

In our Anglican Church of Canada, we pray for our Primate Linda,

for the Indigenous Archbishop Mark, and for all bishops, priests,

deacons, and laity, that your Spirit will guide us all into new paths of

love and truth.

In our own Parish, we pray for our interim priest, Ayoob, and for

Deacon Bruce, and for their ministry among us. We pray for the

Wardens who serve St. Hilda’s with such faithfulness. We pray for

Katherine and the ministry of music and worship, and for Karen, the

office administrator.

Sung twice: Veni Sancte Spiritus

Michele Beaudry reading in Spanish

We thank you for the wisdom of your Spirit. Bless those in leader-

ship in our country, particularly at this time of pandemic. May they

be wise in the decisions that govern the lives of all peoples seeking

to live in the community of this nation. May they seek justice:

for the poor, the homeless, the marginalized, the young, the old;

for Indigenous peoples, and for new immigrants and refugees. And

may they make wise decisions affecting the stewardship of the land,

and the environment, and the wealth of our natural resources. Help

each of us to live justly and wisely in our relationships with families,

friends, co-workers and neighbors, and to do our part in caring for

the earth.

Katherine Hume reading in French

We thank you for the peace of your Spirit. Guide those in power in

the community of the nations to seek peace and pursue justice.

Bring freedom to those whose lives are torn by war, insurrection,

and other violence. Bless the peacemakers, those who teach and

practice non-violence, and those who work to free our world, and

our society, from prejudice and hatred. Help each of us also to

believe in and work for the peace we pray for.

Sung twice: Veni Sancte Spiritus

Fr Ayoob reading in Italian

We thank you for the gifts of your Spirit. We ask you to equip us

for the work and relationships to which you have called each of us.

Help us to be stewards of the gifts you give us: of knowledge, skill,

artistry, experience, energy, and of our time and financial resources.

Sung twice: Veni Sancte Spiritus

Eric Paetkau reading in German

We thank you for the fruit of your Spirit. We ask you to help us to

live lives which are more pleasing to you and showing others your

love. Teach us to be generous, patient, and kind, strengthen us to be

faithful, and inspire us with the joy of knowing you.

We pray you would teach each of us to be sensitive to the needs of

those around us, of those who cross our paths each day, in person or

on social media. Open our eyes that we can see their need. Open our

ears that we can hear the longings of their hearts. And open our

hearts that we can respond to them with the love of Christ. Help us

to rise above our fears, anxieties, addictions and apathy to hear and

see the wrongs we are called to right, and the pain of this time of

global pandemic history in which you call us to be agents of healing

in our own small way.

Sung twice: Veni Sancte Spiritus

Confession and Absolution Celebrant Dear friends in Christ,

God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy;

God welcomes sinners and invites them to this table.

Let us confess our sins, confident in God’s forgiveness. ~ Silence is kept. ~

Most merciful God,

All we confess that we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us,

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your name. Amen.

Celebrant Almighty God have mercy upon you,

pardon and deliver you from all your sins,

confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,

and keep you in eternal life;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Celebrant The peace of the Lord be with you all.

People And also with you.

Offertory Hymn ........................... Breathe on Me, Breath of God CP 649 1. Breathe on me, breath of God; fill me with life anew,

that I may love what thou dost love,

and do what thou wouldst do.

2. Breathe on me, breath of God, until my heart is pure,

until my will is one with thine to do and to endure.

3. Breathe on me, breath of God, till I am wholly thine,

until this earthly part of me glows with thy fire divine.

4. Breathe on me, breath of God: so shall I never die,

but live with thee the perfect life of thine eternity.

Prayer over the Gifts Celebrant Giver of life,

People receive all we offer you this day.

Let the Spirit you bestow on your Church

continue to work in the world

through the hearts of all who believe.

We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.

Eucharistic Prayer 3 ............................................................... BAS p. 198 Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts.

People We lift them to God.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.

People It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Celebrant Blessed are you, gracious God,

creator of heaven and earth;

we give you thanks and praise

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

In fulfilment of your promise

you pour forth your Spirit upon us,

filling us with gifts and leading us into all truth.

You give us power to proclaim your gospel to all nations

and to serve you as a royal priesthood.

Therefore we join our voices with angels and archangels,

and with all those in whom the Spirit dwells,

to proclaim the glory of your name:

Sanctus Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Celebrant We give thanks to you, Lord our God,

for the goodness and love

you have made known to us in creation;

in calling Israel to be your people;

in your Word spoken through the prophets;

and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus your Son.

For in these last days you sent him

to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world.

Page 12: THE DAY OF PENTECOST 31 2020 MAY€¦ · For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in

12

In him, you have delivered us from evil,

and made us worthy to stand before you.

In him, you have brought us

out of error into truth,

out of sin into righteousness,

out of death into life.

On the night he was handed over

to suffering and death,

a death he freely accepted,

our Lord Jesus Christ took bread;

and when he had given thanks to you,

he broke it, and gave it to his disciples and said,

“Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine;

and when he had given thanks,

he gave it to them, and said,

“Drink this, all of you:

this is my blood of the new covenant,

which is shed for you and for many

for the forgiveness of sins.

Whenever you drink it,

do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore Father, according to his command,

People we remember his death,

we proclaim his resurrection,

we await his coming in glory;

Celebrant and we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving

of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all;

presenting to you, from your creation,

this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God,

to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts,

that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ

and his blood of the new covenant.

Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice,

that we, made acceptable in him,

may be sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

In the fullness of time,

reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new,

and bring us to that city of light

where you dwell with all your sons and daughters;

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

the firstborn of all creation,

the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation;

by whom, and with whom, and in whom,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father,

now and for ever. Amen

The Lord’s Prayer to be spoken in your own language

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come, your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,

now and forever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread Celebrant Lord, we died with you on the cross.

People Now we are raised to new life.

Celebrant We were buried in your tomb.

People Now we share in your resurrection.

Celebrant Live in us, that we may live in you.

Agnus Dei Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: grant us peace.

Prayer After Communion

Celebrant Father,

All may we who have received this eucharist

live in the unity of your Holy Spirit,

that we may show forth his gifts to all the world.

We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
