Dr. Eugeniya (Jenny) Iskrenova-Ekiert was elected Chair-Elect with 66 votes, and Ms. Kerra R. Fletcher was elect-
ed Secretary with 65 votes. Not since the days of the Soviet Union has an uncontested election had such high
turnout — and without the threat of the gulag! It is curious, though, that the section member who voted for Dr.
Iskrenova-Ekiert but not for Ms. Fletcher has been neither seen nor heard from since the election. Congratula-
tions to our newly elected officers!
Dr. Freddie Jordan succeeds to Chair and Dr. Wayne Cook to Immediate Past Chair. Dr. Prakriti Pollack starts the
second and final year in her term as Treasurer, while Dr. Steve Trohalaki and Dr. Rachel Jakubiak start their final
years in their three-year terms as Councilor and Alternate Councilor, respectively. The Section owes a debt of
thanks to our outgoing officers — Dr. Yu Kay Law and Dr. Leanne Petry. Photos supplied by the 2016 Dayton Sec-
tion Board of Directors and our outgoing officers appear below.

Annual Poster Session and Patterson College Chemistry Awards
Venue: Central State University, Joshua I. Smith Center for Education and Natural
Sciences Building Atrium, 1st Floor
Address: 1400 Brush Row Road, Wilberforce, OH 45384
Specifics: The program schedule, parking information, and date confirmation will be
available at DaytonACS.org within the next few weeks.
The Annual Poster Session is a tradition of long standing in the Dayton Section. This year we were
looking forward to returning to the University of Dayton after completing the cycle of rotating
venues among area universities. However, we were unable to secure reservations at UD but we
were fortunately able to make arrangements at CSU, where the cycle began.
Outstanding undergraduate and graduate poster presentations will be awarded with prizes of
$100. The Dayton Section Officers invite you, your colleagues, and students to present a poster
relating to any area of chemical research. Complimentary food and soft drinks will be provided by
the Section. In addition to poster awards, we will also recognize the outstanding junior chemistry
major at each college and university within the Section’s boundaries with the Patterson College
Chemistry Awards.
Call for Poster Abstracts Send abstracts of 250 words or fewer by Sunday, April 3, 2016 to Dr. Freddie Jordan at
[email protected]. For students, please indicate on the abstract if you would like to
be considered for an award and whether you are an undergraduate or graduate student.
Use the ACS abstract template (from DaytonACS.org/abstract/Abstract Template.doc).
Poster boards measure 4’ high by 6’ wide.
Volunteers Needed for TechFest 2016
When: Saturday, Feb. 13, 10 AM–6 PM, and Sunday Feb. 14, 11 AM–5 PM
Where: Sinclair Community College Ponitz Center (Building 12)
Parking: Free in the underground garage beneath Building 12 off Fourth St.
Since 2003 TechFest has brought “Math & Science Outside the Classroom” to the Miami
Valley. With the Dayton Section’s participation, this event is the area’s biggest outreach pro-
gram and is a lot of fun for families as well as exhibitors. For more information on TechFest
2016, check out the enclosed flyer, which is also available at:
http://www.ascdayton.org/TechFest/downloads/TF16_student_flyer.pdf
If you are interested in volunteering for one or more 2-hour shifts, please contact Amit Shar-
ma at [email protected] or Wayne Cook at [email protected]. Let us know
your preferences, if any, for a time and/or date slot.

The Section’s Membership Meeting was held at the Wellington Grill on Thursday, November 19th. A
score of members assembled to honor six new 50-year members: Dr. Robert Begland, Mr. Charles
Friedman, Dr. Larry Helmick, Dr. Paula Parker, Dr. Al Schlueter, and Mr. Frank Winslow.
Dr. Begland, recently retired from DuPont and new to the Section, wore an incredibly bright red tie col-
ored with a cyanine dye that was the result of his first research project at DuPont. He confided that he
only wears it on special occasions, and only at night because if it were exposed to UV light, it would ex-
plode. A wave of astonishment overtook the room as Dr. Larry Helmick talked about his 48-year
teaching career at Cedarville University, which started in 1968. Dr. Al Schlueter, a longtime resident of
Yellow Springs, originally hails from Ferguson, Missouri. Dr. Schlueter, who can be regularly found sip-
ping beer at the Yellow Springs Brewery’s taproom, credits Chemistry with turning his life towards a
more virtuous path.
Unfortunately, the glare from Dr. Begland’s tie rendered overexposed all photos taken, so we had to
rely on a hard-drinking sketch artist for images of our honorees, below.

The Dayton Section celebrated National Chemistry Week at two events in 2015. The first event took
place at the Centerville Library on October 17th, and the second event was held on October 24th and
25th at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery. The events highlighted this year’s theme, “Chemistry Col-
ors Our World.” Experiments included chromatography with leaves and dyes, mixing water colors, and
looking at the colors of gas emission spectra with diffraction glasses. Altogether, we assisted around
500 local children perform experiments. Iskrenova-Ekiert
We give a special thanks to all of our volunteers. At the Centerville Library they included Wayne Cook,
Judit Beagle, Melinda Greer, Betty Zakeri, Mahdees Moazampour, Jenny Iskrenova-Ekiert, and Tom Ek-
iert. Volunteers at the Boonshoft Museum were Ed Geller, Yu Kay Law, Kevin Chaput, Heather Chaput,
Amit Sharma, Vladimir Benin, Radka Benin, Lyuba Benin, Melinda Greer, Betty Zakeri, Mahdees Mo-
azampour, Jenny Iskrenova-Ekiert, Tom Ekiert, Joanna Wang, Chrissy Grabinski, Destinee Jones, Dan
Jennings, Mike Sawdey, and Joy Haley. We also appreciate all the volunteers from Central State Uni-
versity, the University of Dayton Chemistry Club, the Wright State University Chemistry Club, and the
Boonshoft staff members. Special thanks go to Kirby Underwood from Wright State for performing
demonstrations throughout the weekend.
No, it’s not John Fortman
caught in a time warp; it’s Kirby
Underwood from Wright State
University doing a chemistry
“magic” show at the Boonshoft!
At the Boonshoft, Chrissy Grabinski (right)
helps budding chemists (including Olivia
Greer, left) mix ice melt and phenol red in a
bag. Adding baking soda makes the bag
expand and change color! Whaaaaaat?
At the Centerville Library, Betty Zakeri and
Mahdees Moazampour help kids use vegetables to
color pictures. The kids later asked their parents if
they can do this activity the next time they’re
served Brussel sprouts.
The winner of the Section’s NCW Illustrated
Poem Contest is Alexis Parker, who is in the
class of Ms. Kathryn Zaborowski at Urbana
High School. Alexis’ winning submission
will now contend in the National ACS Con-
test. The Section awarded Alexis a $25 gift
card for her efforts and creativity. We offer
her our heartfelt congratulations!

ACID GLYCINE OCTANOL Two second-graders are out on the
playground. Their conversation goes
something like this: “What does your
Dad do?,” asks Bobby. “My Dad is a
doctor,” says Jane. Bobby says, “My
dad is a doctor, too – an ENT. He
cures people with sick ears, noses,
and throats! What kind of doctor is
your dad?” “A Ph.D.,” says
Jane” “What kind of doctor is that?,”
asks Bobby. “I dunno,” says
Jane. “But mommy says it’s the kind
that doesn’t do anyone ANY GOOD.”

Newton, Pascal and Einstein play a game of Hide and Seek (Physics Rules).
Newton and Pascal shout out, “Not it!” so Einstein is ‘it.’ He closes his eyes
and starts to count. Pascal runs off and hides behind a tree while Newton
draws a square box around him with 1 meter on each side. Einstein finishes
counting, spots Newton right away, and says to himself, “Ah, very clever.”
Then he shouts out,
