Welcome to The De La Salle Academy

www.de-la-salle.co.uk

Welcome to our Academy prospectus. I am delighted with the recent Government announcementfor the multi-million pound development of our academy which is about to get underway, and itsimpact will be felt by students, staff and the local community, as we will provide outstandingopportunities with the new sports, leisure and teaching facilities. The development of a wirelessnetwork across our campus, the introduction of the latest wireless devices in all teaching spaces, new music provision and the further development of our swimming pool and extensive sports fieldwill continue our investment in quality education and long tradition of providing sportsmen torepresent our country at international level. Soccer, cricket, athletics and rugby are flourishing alongwith newer sports such as scuba diving and archery.

We have developed a new range of academic courses including A level Law, Psychology, Art andMusic along with our existing A level provision in Mathematics, Sciences, Languages and theHumanities. Our GCSE and vocational courses continue to flourish and examination resultscontinue to rise year on year. Our latest Ofsted inspection awarded 33 Grade As, one of the highestinspection results in the country and it was no surprise that we were graded outstanding and I hadthe pleasure of meeting the Prime Minister in London.

We are introducing Mandarin as a new language this year and I am delighted that 6 of our seniorpupils will travel to Beijing this summer for an international gathering of students.

In terms of collecting National Awards it was very pleasing to be selected as a finalist byThe Times Educational Supplement for the Outstanding Secondary School of the Year award 2010.We were therefore delighted once again to be shortlisted by The Times for their 2011 awards and Ilook forward to attending the evening on behalf of the whole community,

I hope you find what we have to offer as an Academy as exciting as I do and I look forward tomeeting with you in the near future.

They have agreed to co-ordinate admission arrangements and follow the equalpreference scheme determined by Liverpool Education Authority. Religious EducationThe De La Salle Academy is a Catholic Academy, and we see religious education as one ofthe cornerstones of our curriculum, giving young people moral guidance and enhancing theirunderstanding of Catholic and Christian beliefs.

Although the majority of students at The De La Salle Academy are Catholic, many of ourstudents come from other faiths, and our curriculum at all key stages reflects this diversity, teaching children about the different religions in the world and promoting understanding andtolerance of other religions. It is our belief that the religious education we provide isappropriate for all young people.

At Key Stage 4 we enter almost all students for GCSE in Religious Studies, and the syllabuswe choose is both challenging and interesting for Years 10 and 11.

In sixth form we offer AS/A2 in Philosophy and Ethics, in addition to one core lesson inReligious Education which focuses on contemporary moral issues.

We would expect any parents opting for The De La Salle Academy to desire a Christianeducation for their children. However, any parent wishing to withdraw a child from ReligiousEducation should contact the Principal to discuss the matter, and to gain information on thealternative provision available.

“Teachers have high expectations ofstudents’ work and behaviour.”

In athletics too, we have outstanding performers, and the sporting life of the Academy ishealthy and vibrant.

SpecialEducational NeedsNationally, it is expected that one in five children may at some time require extra helpat school due to learning difficulties, and emotional or behavioural problems. In orderto help these students we have developed a Special Educational Needs Policy, whichis in line with the Government’s SEN Code of Practice.

The Governors have implemented the SEN policy and the new Statutory dutiesintroduced by the Special Education Needs and Disability Act 2001 and the revisedregulations which came into force on January 1st 2002.

The identification of students with special educational needs is now encompassed ina whole school approach and is overseen by the Special Education Needs Co-ordinator. Resources are allocated to special needs through the Learning SupportDepartment and by the provision of smaller teaching groups in the lower Academyand classroom support.

Students who have been identified as having special needs are taught in smallergroups in Years 7, 8 & 9.

We aim to inform parents of any special action the Academy has takento meet the needs of students who have been identified as havingspecial educational needs.

The De La Salle Academy has now received the Dyslexia-Friendly School Award.

AssessmentStudents arriving at The De La Salle Academy are placed in sets based on their KS2achievement. Within a week they are tested and assessed. The data is used to makeadjustments in ability sets.

Throughout the Academy there is a combination of whole class teaching, small grouplearning and individual tuition.

Targets are set for all students, and there are six student assessments each year to monitorprogress against these targets.
