Year 5 camp Last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Year 5 travelled to Canberra! They were very excited to attend this three day camp. I would like to thank all the Year 5 team, including Ms Catherine Bruce, Ms Rebecca Rawson, Ms Kate Crilly, Mr Zach Nicholls and Mr Kym Waterson for their presence and supervision this week. It was a jam-packed 3 days and I enjoyed being able to experience it with everyone! Here is what one student had to say: “Three days to learn about the history of our capital city, while having fun on the way. It was a tiring few days, having to wake up at 5:45am nearly every morning, but year 5 definitely enjoyed it. Many of the activities were very interesting and we learned a lot about Canberra, the Government and Australia's history. The AIS and Questacon were certainly crowd-pleasers, with interactive activities that built on the students’ knowledge without them knowing. During the second day, we visited the War Memorial where we learnt a lot about Australia's history throughout different war’s while watching videos on recreated airplane battles. On the second night we went to the cinemas and watched ‘The Lion King’. You got chips if you didn’t fall asleep and the movie was so good that for a period after the movie people continued to sing songs from it. On the last day we visited Government house and Parliament house. We got to see how the parliament operated and what happened in a normal government meeting. Year 5 did a role play, pretending to be a part of Australia’s parliament. In the end, year 5 camp was a lot of fun and it was an extremely worthwhile and educational trip.” (written by Zara in 5ZN).

Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) Last week, Year 5 students undertook an educational tour of the national capital where they had the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist the cost of this excursion, the Australian Government contributes funding of $20 per students under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion and was used to subsidise the cost of transport and additional staff attending.

Zone Track and Field Carnivals Good luck to all students representing the Dem at the Zone Athletics carnivals next week. A reminder that this year the carnivals are being held at ES Marks at Moore Park and students will travel by bus together as a team to and from the events. The team from the Dem is 80 strong and travelling as a group is great for team spirit! The Zone Field will be held on Monday 9 September and the Zone Track on Tuesday 10 September. Parents are welcome to attend.

Working Bees Next week are we have three working bees: On Friday 13 September the Dem will be hosting around 15 employees from Lend Lease who participate in an annual local community program. These employees will be helping around the school with a number of activities such providing all-purpose weather treatment of seats and garden beds, assisting with building of musical props and helping out in the library. The Dem very much appreciates this community initiative and the value their efforts adds to our school. Should you have any queries in regards to this event, please email Ashley Grimmond ([email protected]). On Saturday 14 September we will kick off the first Annie musical working bee focusing on cutting and sewing for the many costumes required. If you can assist by following some simple patterns or making simple alterations we would love to hear from you. Any sewing machines that you can bring in on the day would also be appreciated. Please email Myra Wearne ([email protected]) and write MUSICAL as the subject line of your email. We will also continue working on props construction, so if you have the skills to assist in this area, please come along. The working bee will start at 9:30am.

On Sunday 15 September, the P&C will be holding their Term 3 gardening working bee. All parent and child helpers are welcome to come along and assist with tidying up garden beds, clean up leaf litter from drains and other general gardening activities. Lunch will be provided on the day. Please contact Lucy Sarto via the P&C website http://www.thedempc.com.au for more information.

P&C: Spell-a-thon Word lists for Spell-a-thon have been sent home. Students have plenty of time to practice their words and be ready for the Spell-a-thon test on Tuesday 17 September during class time. Papers will be marked on Friday 20 September at 9am. If you would like to help the P&C with marking these tests please email Myra Wearne at [email protected].

FABStar! FABStar! is an initiative to recognise positive behaviours in the playground. A FABStar! slip was drawn from all the students who received FABstar! slips in recognition of their positive behaviour on the playground last week.

This week’s K-2 Fabstar! is Marcel in Kindergarten. He saw someone on the playground who was upset and alone and offered to play with them to help cheer them up! Wow, Marcel! Keep up the great work!

The Spell-a-thon Quiz will be held on Tuesday 17 September 2019 in classrooms during school time. The funds raised will again be used to support the school’s three year (2018-2020) Technology Plan. This year, monies will help fund the purchase of laptops for use in classrooms as well as costly printing materials for the 3D printer utilised in digital technology projects. Last year’s Technology objective was getting iPads into each classroom and expanding the Sphero robotic programme. Students raised a fantastic $21,000 which was a great contribution to this objective. The Quiz will be marked on Friday 20 September and sent home with students. Last year’s pizza party for the classes which raised the most money was thoroughly enjoyed by the students so we’ve decided to hold this prize again. There will also be Trophies and Giant Teddies for the classes which get the most correct words. We thank you in advance for your support in making this event both an educational and financial success for the students of the Dem School. MARKING HELP NEEDED: We need Volunteers to help mark the Spell-a-thon quiz papers on Friday 20 September 2019 from 9am. If you can help please email: [email protected] Thank you!
