The Desert Voice
You’ve heard it said,
“Never settle for second best.”
But, when our reality doesn’t
reach that high standard we often
conclude, “It’ll have to do” and
“It’s not as bad as it could be.”
Many people would like to
believe that God will judge them
based upon a standard of, “It’ll
have to do” and “It’s not as bad
as it could be.” However, God’s
Word declares, “All who rely on
works of the law are under a
curse; for it is written, ‘Cursed be
everyone who does not abide by
all things written in the Book of
the Law, and do them’” (Galatians
3:10) Striving and struggling to
justify ourselves before God by
diminished standards will not sat-
isfy Him. “Now it is evident that
no one is justified before God by
the law for ‘The righteous shall
live by faith’” (Galatians 3:11).
“By faith” means there is
nothing we can achieve or add to
our salvation. It is fin-
ished or done for us. “Christ re-
deemed us from the curse of the
law by becoming a curse for us-
-for it is written, ‘Cursed is eve-
ryone who is hanged on a
tree’— so that in Christ Jesus the
blessing of Abraham might
come to the Gentiles, so that we
might receive the promised
Spirit through faith” (Galatians
3:13-14)
During this Lenten season
we are called away from a self
reliance that says, “It’ll have to
do” and “It’s not as bad as it
could be.” to a firm trust in
Christ who assures us, “It is fin-
ished.” Sin and death have been
destroyed. Let us “never settle
for second best.”

adult Bible class at 8:30 am with a single worship service at 10:00 am.
This service will be a Di-vine service with Holy
Communion. Following the service we will have a picnic lunch with fellowship and family time. So mark your calendar this month for Sunday, March 29 and look for more details as we get closer to our Jubilee Sunday Celebra-tion!
BONHOEFFER
PASTOR, MARTYR,
PROPHET, SPY
BY ERIC METAXAS
As Adolph Hitler and the Nazis at-
tempted to exterminate the Jews of
Europe a small number of dissidents and saboteurs
worked to dismantle the Third Reich from the inside.
One of these men was Dietrich Bonheoffer – pastor
and author. He was a deeply convicted Christian and
this autobiography is a moving account of his life
and good works. It is an exceptional book.

“Watchers on the Hill” Wednesdays 3pm & 7pm
The hill called Golgotha was not empty that Friday. Besides the crosses and those dying upon them, there
were witnesses—watchers on that ancient hill. This series of special services for Lent attempts to over-
hear the conversations between those first-century characters—some historical, some fictitious—as they
witnessed the death of our Lord. With the cross as the focal point and the final words of Jesus as the com-
mon thread, each drama works to draw us into the reality and significance of our Savior’s death, celebrat-
ing, at last, the miracle of our salvation.
March 4 As Judas visits the cross of the master he betrayed, we discover that Jesus’ sacrifice means
that even the greatest of sins can be forgiven.
March 11 In a thought-provoking dialog between a callous observer and the sister of a thief, we are let
in on the discovery that heaven is ours.
March 18 As two women contemplate “The Good Son,” we, too, are led to contemplate Jesus’ obedi-
ence ... “even unto death.”
March 25 Two soldiers stand guard at the cross, turning our thoughts to a journey only the Son of God
could return from—the descent into hell.
April 1 As Mary Magdalene and Nicodemus await the final, wrenching moments of their master’s
life, we witness God’s great gift of salvation.

ASH WEDNESDAY & LENT God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God 2 Corin-
thians 5:21
Surely he took our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we consider Him stricken by God, smitten and
afflicted. But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment
that bought us peace, was upon Him, and his wounds we are healed. Isaiah 3:-5.
We have begun a period of Lent-40 days ( not counting Sundays) when we intensely study the
passion of Christ during six mid week services. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. During that
day's worship service we can receive ashes on our forehead indicating repentance and sorrow.
What specific sins are you sorrowful over at this time? Be assured that Jesus’ death on the cross
was sufficient to atone for that sin and all the others in the world. Think of that—the sins of every
single person who ever lived or is yet to be born are forgiven! Christ died for us and the billions
of souls throughout time.
Forgiveness, through Christ's atoning sacrifice is not limited to one group of people only. It has
world wide scope. It must be received by faith that Christ died for the sins of mankind.
For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were re-
deemed...with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. He was chosen
before creation of the world...through him you believe in God who raised Him from the dead and
glorified Him, and so your faith and hope are in God. 1 Peter1:18-21
Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ: Who being in very nature God, did not con-
sider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very na-
ture of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearances a man, hum-
bled Himself and became obedient to death, even the cross! Philippians 2:5-8
Similarly Jesus redeems believers from the curse of the law and all wickedness by His blood.
The result is the forgiveness of our sins and our justification. Phyllis Hafliger

MASS NEWS FOR FEBRUARY 2020
On February 10th our Annual MASS Valentine's Dinner was held at Sloan’s Restaurant. 28
people were in attendance. Mary Helen and Kathleen Kelly provided an entertaining romance
game which was enjoyed by all. Russ Campbell went over a brief history of MASS. He also in-
formed us of the current Mike financial situation and had some updates on our Seminary stu-
dents. The evening was concluded with the Lord’s Prayer. Each lady was given a red
rose and this time in loving memory of Jerry Norris who started this red rose tradi-
tion years ago. To all of you who made a donation: Thank you! If you missed our din-
ner, please join us the second Tuesday of every month at Sloan’s at 6:00 pm. It is
good to see the members of Trinity Lutheran Church so solidly behind the MASS Pro-
gram.
God bless you and God bless the men & women of M.A.S.S.
In HIS service,
Mike Thomason & Russ Campbell
Terry Lahn Memorial Aid Fund (He was the former President of Trinity for 10 years
and the beloved brother of Don Lahn)
Terry 'Lahn’s daughters, Heather and Tracy, made a contribution to establish a
fund to help members in temporary financial difficulty.
They both have received help in the past from their churches and want to “pay it
forward” to help others. They anticipate the fund could be used for food, diapers,
paying electric or water bill‘s etc. If you or any member you know has a short term financial
need, please let Pastor or Emily know. Church Office: 760-347-3971.
Update: Terry Lahn Memorial Aid Fund
The first grant from the Terry Lahn Memorial Aid Fund has been given to a member who had
urgent medical attention that was not covered by insurance. The fund is available to any member
who has a short term financial need
Members are encouraged to make a tax-deductible contribution to Trinity Lutheran Church
Terry Lahn Memorial Aid Fund so that when any member has a need the funds are available.
A Message from Don and Wanda Lahn
We want to thank you for your prayers and well wishes and want you to know they are
cherished. God has blessed us greatly as Don is now 88 years old and we have had 62
wonderful years together.

Beautiful Feet Retreat What a successful event! We were swept off our feet as we lifted the lid off several
shoe boxes to examine various styles of shoes and learned how each represents a
portion of our walk with the Lord! We all have
“Beautiful Feet” that are meant to hit the road run-
ning to share the Good News of a loving Savior.
We enjoyed toe tapping songs of praise, a delicious
taco salad lunch, a make and take craft opportunity
and sharing with one another as only sisters in
Christ can!
The Lord blessed our socks off!
