Dear Readers,

My team and I are all proactive in setting personal and professional goals for ourselves. And we’ve discovered that getting close to any goal requires a deadline, and some small steps towards reaching the big goal. Steps you measure and keep a close focus on, every week.

It’s been exactly one year since we launched our first magazine, which was a big goal for us. It took a long time to get that first copy finished. Since then we’ve developed more ideas, met more brilliant people, and worked every month to improve the content, competitions, and circulation. Without clear goals we wouldn’t have succeeded with any of those things.

Can you help us raise £10,000 by the end of 2017?

Let me explain. We’ve set a new goal to raise £10,000, for two local charities we are huge fans of, by the end of 2017. And we want you involved. 100%. Completely committed. How? Simple. Please just go to our Just Giving page https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/LGD-Local-Charities and make a small donation. Then post your link on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and any other social media platforms you have.

In fact, you could just send us the names and addresses of anyone you know that loves helping charities. Who would love to be part of our community. Is that OK?

Enjoy the first magazine of 2017 and let’s make 2017 a year we’ll all long remember.

A very happy new year.

Regards

Barry RandallDedicated to setting goals that count.

The challengeThis large courtyard garden in Wanlip, Leicestershire was in need of a complete renovation. The owners complained it could take them a whole day just to remove all the weeds from the flagstones!

Our clients were looking for a design that would open up the courtyard to give them a spacious and comfortable area where they could entertain. They also wanted to give their dogs a safe and roomy environment for roaming around.

The conceptFirst, we laid limestone paving, flowing out into the garden to give a new patio space that matched the inside paving. A circular feature was cut into the middle section to break up the pattern and add interest to the design.

We bordered the paving with rumbled setts to highlight certain areas and give a defined finish. The paving was then grouted using an eco-fill grouting compound to reduce the problem of weeds growing between the joints. All the paving was laid onto full mortar beds to give strength and help prevent future movement.

Next, we created a new raised seating area using reclaimed bricks to match the surrounding walls. All the walling was supported with concrete footings and lined with a damp-proof membrane to prevent water sitting along the back of the brickwork.

A curved sleeper bed was inset into the corner between two long timber benches.

As an eye-catching addition, we installed a natural rock water feature in the raised bed to bring sound and movement to the garden.

Trellis panels were erected across the back of the bed while existing plants were dug in along the back wall to give further height and screen the wall.

A new artificial lawn was laid and cut into shapes. Artificial turf offers an easy maintenance alternative to grass, and the geotextile membrane we used will help to reduce weeds. It’s also pet-friendly, especially when lined with grit stone for smells.

The existing fence panels on the curved wall by the tree were removed and the wall built up to be the same height as the pillars. New tiles were installed across the lower wall to create a bigger bed and give more space around a mature tree.

Finally, a new ACO channel drainage system was installed across the house to catch any surface water running from the new patio.

The conclusionThe owners describe their new garden as ‘a joy to look at, be out in, experience and maintain’. We’ve certainly tried to emulate

What particularly impressed our clients was the quality and craftsmanship involved in our garden landscape. It also impressed our long-time suppliers, Marshalls, who have asked to use this garden in their catalogues.

In fact, we’re so pleased with this design we’re entering it into the Marshalls register Awards, which celebrate the best garden and driveway projects that were designed and installed by members of Marshalls’ national Register scheme.

It’s the first month of 2017 and we’re already excited about lots of great projects we have coming up. It’s also Marshalls registered installer awards this month and we’re pretty confident some of the gardens and driveways we built in 2016 will be up for nomination. Not to mention the great projects that we already have booked in for this year! (Keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates.)

www.facebook.com/leicestershiregardendesign

Just a few facts from 2016. We designed and built 79 gardens. That’s 79 people who have beautiful new gardens and who can’t wait to start entertaining when the sun comes out. Out of the 79 gardens we built, eight included a fire pit, a great feature to include if you would love to use your garden in all seasons.

Did you know that we install gas fire pits too? It’s a much cleaner way of keeping warm: no cleaning up ash and sourcing wood or coal! This was one of the big trends in 2016, along with rendered raised flowers beds, natural stone water features, and artificial lawn areas (dog owners love the zero maintenance).

Is your garden ready for the sunshine this spring?

I’m dedicated to creating beautiful outdoor spaces,

Jeff Randall

Landscaping trends to look out for in 2017

GARDENS & LANDSCAPES 5.

After seeing what was popular in landscape design last year, we’re predicting that the following trends will be on display in gardens throughout 2017.

Mirror trellis illusionsWhenever mirror trellising is included in a garden design, it becomes an instant talking point. Eye-catching, unusual and very stylish, it’s particularly effective at bringing light to dark or shady areas of your garden. The mirror reflects sunshine into corners and gives the appearance of depth, which makes it perfect for extending a space in the garden.

Mirror trellises can also be used to make unsightly walls or fences more attractive. In fact, they bring a touch of glamour wherever you choose to position them.

Contemporary rendered raised bedsThe rendered walls of raised beds are ideal for modern garden landscaping and a popular choice in many of our designs. The smooth surface of the walling creates a texture that contrasts beautifully with harmonising planting schemes and atmospheric lighting.

Properly built, a rendered raised bed will last a long time, especially if it’s constructed with waterproofing in mind and quality outdoor paint is used.

Durable outdoor rattan furnitureRattan is a tough and versatile member of

the palm family that was imported from the Far East in the late 19th century. Initially, it was used mainly for conservatory furniture. Nowadays, since the introduction of synthetic rattan, it’s durable enough to be used outdoors.

Synthetic rattan is hugely popular and makes gorgeous garden sofas and chairs that are comfortable, durable and built to withstand the elements.

Artificial lawns in any shapeThe traditional square or rectangular grass lawn is now being outshone by the flexibility offered by artificial turf. With regular lawns you can be rather restricted in your choice of design as grass will not always grow healthily where you want it to – and you can end up with thin and sparse patches.

Artificial turf, though, can be cut to any shape you want, wherever you want it. This means you can create an instant lawn in narrow thin spaces, wide open areas or tiny corners.

Beautifully sturdy oak pergolasHigh-quality oak gives a pergola strength and durability. The beauty of the wood makes the pergola an attractive structure that’s solid enough to display the most vigorous flowering climbing plants.

An oak pergola brings height to your garden design as well as shade and shelter, if you cover it with waterproof fabric.

As you can see from these pictures, these trends bring style, elegance and practicality to a diverse range of landscape garden designs.

GARDENS & LANDSCAPES 7.

Do you still get lots of wildlife in your garden during the colder winter months? As you know, during the winter wildlife in your garden will find it very difficult to survive but by just making small contributions and adjustments you can really help them thrive. Here is what you can do to help.

With the depletion of many natural habitats, our gardens play an increasingly important role in supporting wildlife. Winter, in particular, is a time when many garden visitors could do with a little help when it comes to food and shelter. Fill up the feedersWinter is a great time to see birds close up as natural foods such as insects, berries and worms may be hard to come by. At this time of year, a wide range of birds will take advantage of bird feeders instead. Provide clean, fresh waterFood is, of course, always welcome but fresh water is just as important to birds and visiting mammals such as hedgehogs and badgers.

As well as drinking water, birds also need somewhere to bathe as keeping their

plumage in good condition is vital to their survival. If you have a pond or bird bath, break the ice during freezing conditions to give birds access to water.

Make a hedgehog feel at homeMost hedgehogs hibernate between November and March as they have sufficient fat reserves to survive during that period. What they need is to find a warm place where they can curl up safely and go to sleep. It’s simple to construct a square wooden hedgehog home, or you can buy a purpose-built one. Even a log pile tucked away in the corner of the garden will offer enough shelter. A space for wildlifeOne of the best ways to help wildlife is to replicate a natural green space and that means letting a bit of your garden go wild. Leaf litter provides cover for slugs and insects, perfect food for birds and small mammals. Log piles are habitats for a range of species including frogs and toads, while leaving herbaceous and hollow-stemmed plants unpruned will give a home to overwintering insects.

If you can offer a wild patch of garden; a shallow dish of water at ground level; and additional food such as seed, nuts, and fruit, you’ll be helping a diverse range of species survive this winter.
