Light Up For Christmas

Council Christmas Party

The Advent season is here. On Tuesday, December 3rd, the Council hosted the Lighting of the Manger celebration at Christ the King. Advent wreaths are dusted off and placed on our tables to help us remember the “Reason for

the Season.”

The wreaths are a favorite way to celebrate the month of December for many Christians. Even though Advent wreaths are popular among Christians, many are not aware of the rich meaning and symbolism

embedded in the traditions.

The circular shape of the wreath, without beginning or end, symbolizes God the Father and eternal life. The Advent wreath traditionally

holds four candles which are lit, one at a time, on each of the four Sundays of the Advent season. Each candle represents 1,000 years. Added together, the four candles symbolize the 4,000 years that humanity waited for the world’s Savior—from Adam and Eve to Jesus, whose birth was foretold in the Old

Testament.

Some Advent wreath traditions also include a fifth white “Christ” candle, symbolizing purity, that is lit on Christmas Eve or

Christmas day.

Coats for Kids Campaign Winding Down

Remembering John F. Kennedy

This year’s Coats for Kids fund drive is winding down. The last day to make a donation is

Sunday, December 15th.

This year, Sacred Heart Southern Missions identified approximately 200 children that needed assistance in the way of a

winter coat this year.

Our council has been collecting funds to cover the cost of the coats after Masses for three weeks. Unfortunately, this year

we have fallen short of our goal.

At several of the Masses their were second collections for other worthy causes that possibly drove the parishioners

to have to choose which cause

to donate to.

Thanks to everyone who participated in this annual fund drive. While we may have not been able to supply all the funds that we would have liked to raise, we certainly will be able to help over 100 local youth this

year.

Special thanks to Brother Paul Shahan for taking charge and

leading this program.

As the world remembers the assassination of President John F. Kennedy 50 years ago, many reflect on the words from his inaugural speech made less than three years before his tragic

death.

On the 50th anniversary of that inaugural speech, the Order underwrote the restoration of the

lettering at the gravesite of President Kennedy in Arlington Cemetery.

Supreme Knight Carl Anderson said that the Knights of Columbus “is proud and honored to be able to make this contribution to honoring the memory of President Kennedy. His words in-spired an entire generation, not just in America but throughout the world. We are grateful for the opportunity to work with Arlington National Cemetery in helping to ensure that those

words will continue to inspire all who visit his final resting place.”

In recognition of that anniversary and the historic speech, the Knights of Columbus sponsored an essay contest for Catholic high school students, the winner of which was honored at the 129th Supreme Convention. Additionally, a poll was conducted by the Order on President Ken-

nedy's legacy.

Also in celebration of Kennedy's inaugural speech, Supreme Knight Anderson made a speech

titled "Making God's Work Our Own" at Faneuil Hall in Boston on April, 7, 2011.

President Kennedy, the first Catholic U.S. president, joined the Knights of Columbus soon after returning from service in the Navy during World War II and remained an active member for nearly 20 years, until his assassination in 1963. His inaugural address is one of the most famous

in American history.

coming weeks.

need them.

There will be a 4th Degree on Sunday, February 2nd in

Vicksburg.

See Faithful Navigator John

Robinson for further details.

There will be a 2nd Degree on Saturday, December 28th at

Queen of Peace in Olive Branch.
