President’s LetterIt’s always reassuring to know that an editorial is read! Last month I received a letter from the President of another club, a member had shared our newsletter with him. He said how much he liked the words I had written about the need for us to keep the Club relevant and always listen to members.

He shared one of his insights, which is that a Club can be a small place in the city, where nobody is doing anyone any harm, where the members gather for the pleasure that gathering gives. I rather like the idea in these words and think they embody the objectives of a Club well.

We do listen to members. One of the things some members have asked for is to be able to use a private dining room for private dinners on special occasions. Well you will see the Club is making it even more attractive for you to entertain your friends at the Club by offering you the use of a private dining room space for eight or more guests to have a meal at a set price or à la carte. The set price menus that The Northern Club team have developed including quality Club wines make this an extremely enticing way to host dinner parties for those people that you know you owe a meal. It sounds like a most enjoyable way to catch up with your friends without any of the hard work of having a dinner party at home.

Every month the Club arranges some terrific events. Here’s a taste of some of the July activity. In celebration of Bastille Day the Wintergarden was transformed into a Parisenne Night Market where 80 guests tasted their way through 60 of the finest French wines and gastronomic delicacies. In the Members’ Dining Room, a French food revolution took place – a four-course French menu with paired wines followed by the rousing La Marseillaise and an after-dinner talk presented by a very entertaining French expat.

Earlier in the month, 100 members got the inside scoop on New Zealand media and where to find the news when Tim Murphy, former editor-in-chief of the NZ Herald and founder of Newroom.co.nz spoke. On a more intimate note a number of members were treated to a sensory culinary experience with French chef and stylist, Arno Jullien. I discovered 80 percent of our taste comes through our nose! It was a fascinating evening on the science of taste and perception.

August has got some great events for you and don’t forget to book for special September lunch for members and theirspouse/partner with the Governor-General, Her Excellency the Rt Hon. Dame Patsy Reddy GNZM QSO. If you haven’t visited the Club in a while this is a great occasion to see some familiar faces, meet some new people and enjoy something unique as a member of the Club. We look forward to seeing a full Clubhouse and hearing from the Governor-General.

Warm wishes,

Victoria Carter ONZM
