Who said this?An incredible new technology enables the transmission of text on a worldwide base. It rapidly reduces production and distribution costs and for the first time allows large numbers of people to access text and pictures in their own homes.

The new technologies will bring ‘every individual… into immediate and effortless communication with every other, .. Practically obliterate political geography’, and make free trade university.

Thanks to technological advances, ‘there are no longer any foreigners’ and we can look forward to ‘the gradual adoption of a common language’.

DISCUSS

All technologies offer AFFORDANCES, CONSTRAINTS and change SOCIAL PRACTICES

What has been made possible with the introduction of mobile phones?

How have mobile phones limited our activities?

How have our social practices/habits, etc. changed since mobile phones?

Page 9: The digital revolution and the future 2012

Findings? The world in your pocket – less things to carry – diary, Bible, prayer

book, etc.

Micro-credit, banking in Africa, decide markets

Lack of boundaries 24-7 work emails; emailing inappropriate stuff/times. Clear space other times of day

Security in social situations – bury head in to avoid others

Endangered pulpit banter – answer is on the phone (also pub quizzes)

No effort to be on time, as just call & let know

Getting left behind by technology, digital divide/exclusion (lack of signal in N-East)

See what kids are up to on Facebook – where their community is.

The PRESENTSo where are we now?

Page 13: The digital revolution and the future 2012

So….Who has a Facebook account?

Who has a Twitter account?

Who has a blog?

Who has a YouTube channel?

Who has a Pinterest account?

Technological Dystopianism? Digital media

Taking away abilities to do things they could do before, or do things they shouldn’t do

Ruining people’s ability to make meaning precisely/accurately with language

Social relationships – becoming isolated or meeting up with ‘the wrong kind of people’

Changing the way that people think – easily distracted – unable to construct/follow complex arguments.

Social identities - are these ‘genuine’, and how much do you have control over?

ROI?

Page 33: The digital revolution and the future 2012

The human audience will always be the most important. In face, the whole point of your SEO plan is to bring in that audience and speak to them, clearly, in their own language (p102)

Page 34: The digital revolution and the future 2012

If you want to get someone to take action, you need to get a commitment first to something small that will activate a persona, and then you need to ask for a commitment to something later (p77)
