HYMN: 376 O praise ye the Lord, O praise ye the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary: O praise ye the Lord! O praise ye the Lord! O praise ye the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary: O praise ye the Lord. In the firmament of his power, praise him! For his mighty acts, let us praise him! For his excellent greatness, praise him! O praise ye the Lord. With the sound of the trumpet, praise him! With the psaltery and harp, O praise him! With the dance and the timbrel, praise him! O praise ye the Lord. With stringed instruments, let us praise him! And with organs, O let us praise him! With the high and loud cymbals, praise him! O praise ye the Lord. Coda: Let every thing that hath breath, Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord!

ALL Blessed Lord and Father, we have assembled in your Name and in fellowship with one another. Enable us by your grace to offer the sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; to proclaim and respond to your holy word. Teach us to pray for your world and your Church. Grant that we, confessing our sins, may worthily offer to you our souls and bodies as a living sacrifice and eat and drink of your spiritual food in this Holy Sacrament. Amen. COLLECT FOR PURITY Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. THE KYRIE Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy Christ have mercy, Christ have mercy Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy.

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth.

Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God,

you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of

3

the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One; you alone are the Lord: you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. THE COLLECTS PROPER 27 The Sunday closest to November 9

O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

INDEPENDENCE

O God our Father, whose will it is that your people should live in ordered societies; inspire the people of this nation with the spirit of justice, truth and love; and so guide our leaders, and all who make decisions on our behalf, that they may direct our affairs in righteousness and peace; that we may live in peace and harmony and to your honour and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

THE FIRST READING: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Deuteronomy, Chapter eight, verses eleven to twenty

"Take heed lest you forget the LORD your God, by not keeping his commandments and his ordinances and his statutes, which I command you this day: lest, when you have eaten and are full, and have built goodly houses and live in them, and when your herds and flocks multiply, and your silver and gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied, then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, who led you through the great and terrible wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water, who brought you water out of the flinty rock, who fed you in the wilderness with manna which your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end. Beware lest you say in your heart, `My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.' You shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth; that he may confirm his covenant which he swore to your fathers, as at this day. And if you forget the LORD your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you this day that you shall surely perish. Like the nations that the LORD makes to perish before you, so shall you perish, because you would not obey the voice of the LORD your God. READER: The Word of the Lord ALL: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 146: 4-9

4Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help! whose hope is in the LORD their God;

5Who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them; who keeps his promise for ever;

6Who gives justice to those who are oppressed, and food to those who hunger.

7The LORD sets the prisoners free; the LORD opens the eyes of the blind; the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down;

8The LORD loves the righteous; the LORD cares for the stranger; he sustains the orphan and widow, but frustrates the way of the wicked.

9The LORD shall reign for ever, your God, O Zion, throughout all generations. Hallelujah!

THE SECOND READING:

A Reading from the Word of God, written in the Book of Hebrews , Chapter eleven, verses eight to sixteen

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place which he was to receive as an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was to go. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked forward to the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God. By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised.

6

Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore. These all died in faith, not having received what was promised, but having seen it and greeted it from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city..

ALL: Thanks be to God. GRADUAL HYMN : 742

I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above, Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love: The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test, That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best; The love that never falters, the love that pays the price, The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice. And there's another country, I've heard of long ago, Most dear to them that love her,

7

most great to them that know; We may not count her armies, we may not see her King; Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness and all her paths are peace.

THE HOLY GOSPEL GOSPELLER: The Reverend Reginald Knight,

Assistant Curate, St Peter Parish Church READER: The Lord be with you. ALL: And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark, Chapter twelve, verses thirteen to seventeen.

And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and some of the Hero'di-ans, to entrap him in his talk. And they came and said to him, "Teacher, we know that you are true, and care for no man; for you do not regard the position of men, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?" But knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, "Why put me to the test? Bring me a coin, and let me look at it." And they brought one. And he said to them, "Whose likeness and inscription is this?" They said to him, "Caesar's." Jesus said to them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." And they were amazed at him. READER: The Gospel of Christ.

ALL: Praise to Christ our Lord. THE SERMON: The Most Rev & Dr The Honourable John Holder The congregation stands THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen or unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died and was buried.

On the third day He rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right band of the Father.

9

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son He is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. THE INTERCESSION:

A Litany for the Nation

Holy God, Giver of all good things: We thank you for the natural majesty and beauty of this land. They restore us, though we often destroy them. Heal us.

We thank you for the great resources of this nation. They make us rich, though we often exploit them. Forgive us.

We thank you for the men and women who have made this country strong. They are models for us, though we often fall short of them. Inspire us.

10

We thank you for the faith we have inherited in all its rich variety. It sustains our life, though we have been faithless again and again. Renew us.

O Lord, our Governor, bless the leaders of our land, that we may be a people at peace among ourselves and a blessing to other nations. Lord, keep this nation under your care.

To the Governor-General, the Prime Minister , the Leader of the Opposition and to all in administrative authority, grant wisdom and grace in the exercise of their duties. Give grace to your servants, O Lord.

To members of the Senate and the House of Assembly, and those who make our laws , give courage, wisdom and foresight to provide for the needs of all our people, and to fulfill our obligations in the community of nations. Give grace to your servants, O Lord.

To the Judges and officers of our Courts, give understanding and integrity, that human rights may be safeguarded and justice served. Give grace to your servants, O Lord.

And finally, teach our people to rely on your strength and to accept their responsibilities to their fellow citizens, that they may elect trustworthy leaders and make wise decisions for the well-being of our society; that we may serve and honour you faithfully in our generation. For you are exalted as Lord above all.

Help us, O Lord, to finish the good work here begun. Strengthen our efforts to blot out ignorance and prejudice, and to abolish poverty and crime. Hasten the day when all our people, with many voices in one united chorus, will glorify your holy Name. Amen.

16

our Saviour Jesus Christ, who offered Himself in obedience to your will, the Perfect Sacrifice for all mankind.

On the night He was betrayed, He took bread, and when He had given thanks to you, He broke it and gave it to His disciples and said: "Take this and eat it: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper He took the cup of wine: and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the New Covenant, Which is shed for you and for many lot the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, For the remembrance of me.”

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

28

So clouded is the way, so easily we stray, but we’re guided by the right hand of God. The right hand of God is striking in our land, striking out at envy, hate and greed. our selfishness and lust, our pride and deeds unjust are destroyed by the right hand of God. The right hand of God is healing in our land, healing broken bodies, minds and souls. So wondrous is its touch, with love that means so much, when we’re healed by the right hand of God. The right hand of God, is planting in our land, planting seeds of freedom, hope and love. In these Caribbean lands, let his people all join hands, and be one with the right hand of God.
