PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Divine Infant Community,
As we enter the month of May, we are excited to share with our community the
wonderful events happening at The Divine Infant School. This month we honour
Our Lady, Mother Mary. May we be blessed with the same compassion, courage,
strength and love that Mary showed towards Jesus. May we honour our own
mothers with the same respect and love. We invite our community to help us
fundraise by supporting our Walk-a-thon on May17th. In the month of May we
have Music Monday, Track and Field, as well as many excursions planned.
Together we will celebrate Welcome to Kindergarten as well write our EQAO
standardized test. This month we will be celebrating Catholic Education week as
well as Mental Health Awareness. Thank you for supporting our community.
God Bless!!!

THE DIVINE INFANT FUNDRAISER: WALK-A-THON
This year we will fundraise
for our school programs,
bussing for excursions and
curriculum based activities
in our classrooms. We
kindly ask that parents
support our students by
obtaining pledges and
sponsorship. Our Walk-a-
thon will take place on
May 17th 2018. Thank you
for supporting your
community.
ASSESSMENTS: EQAO and CAT TESTING
Beginning in May, all across the TCDSB, students in grades 2, 5,
and 7 will be writing the Cognitive Abilities Test or CAT4. Directly
afterward, our grades 3 and 6 students will be writing the
Ontario-wide EQAO Test. The testing timelines will be sent home
under separate cover, as pertains to the specific grades. Please
check the testing dates for your children to assure they are
present, well-fed and alert on these days.
Bus Behaviour
Reminder:
Parents, please remind your
child to adhere to all rules
on the bus. The privilege to
ride the bus will be forfeited
if a student is unwilling to
follow the safety rules.
When it comes to safety,
any behaviour which is
deemed to risk the health
and well-being of other
passengers (including but
not exclusive to, distracting
the driver, bothering
other students, failure to
remain seated, fighting),
will be grounds for a child
to be removed from the bus.
Parents will be notified by
the Principal. You cannot
block the School Bus from
entering and you cannot
pass the Bus when the
STOP sign is up - This is
not a courtesy we’re asking
for - it’s the law.
TRACK AND FIELD:
Over the next few weeks, our young
athletes will be preparing to
participate in a number of track and
field events. Coaches are working
with students to train for the variety
of events in anticipation of the
Track and Field Meets. This
training will occur in addition to the
regular class routines. As a
precaution, we will be sending
home a Permission to Participate
form along with a Health

students who will be training in
preparation for these events. Please
return these form to school to allow
your child to participate.

Launched in 2005, Music Monday is the world’s largest single event dedicated
to raising awareness for music education. Each year, hundreds of thousands of
students, educators, and music makers participate in a simulta- neous nationwide
concert performance of an original song written by a Canadian artist.
Although it often begins with students, teachers and their surrounding community,
Music Monday also includes community groups, politicians, professional
organizations, music industry, ensembles, and artists.
On Thursday May 2 4 th, 2018, we will celebrate Music Monday in our
community. Mr. Salazar, our very own Maestro will perform a medley of songs
that the intermediate band has been working on throughout the year. This group
will attend the Woodbine festival on May 11thh and compete in a festival against
other schools. We wish them best of luck and fun at this exciting event.
Why Music Monday matters?
Music programs create vital communities!
Learning music leads to success in life and a joy within
Our young people deserve the benefits from learning, creating and
making music!
The Arts matter … just as much as Literacy and Numeracy!
May is Speech, Language, and Hearing Awareness Month
Did you know that speech and language delays are the most frequently
reported problem in children?
Early speech and language development has a major impact on future
academic success. For example, research shows that a child’s vocabu- lary
when starting school is a prime predictor of school success or fail- ure. We
also know that early language skills are directly related to later reading skills,
and that children with poor language development have difficulty using
language to learn math and science.
If you have a concern about your child’s speech or language, your
school Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) can
help!
GUIDANCE CORNER
During the month of May, there is a focus on Mental Health Awareness and the Virtue of Compassion.
The first week of May is typically known as Children's Mental Health Awareness week. Take the time
to help your child understand that talking about our feelings and getting help when something is
bothering us, is the healthy way to approach fear, anxiety, worry or depression. Also, trying to
understand another person's feelings and wanting to help them, can go a long way in responding
compassionately to those who may need our friendship and support. Help your child develop positive
coping strategies when facing difficult situations. I have included a parent fact sheet from the
Canadian Psychological
Association: http://www.cpa.ca/docs/File/Publications/FactSheets/PsychologyWorksFactSheet_Par
entingChallenges.pdf, and a link to parent resources from the Psychology Foundation of Canada

Grade 8 Exit Survey
In accordance with Creating Pathways to Success (2013), all grade 8 students will be completing an
exit survey as they work towards fulfilling the expectation of finalizing their Individual Pathways Plan
(IPP). Most grade 8 students should now have an Individual Pathways Plan on
www.myblueprint.ca/tcdsband teachers may have been encouraging them to work towards answering
the four questions for Education and Career/Life Planning. Ask your child to show you their
Individual Pathways Plan and become familiar with it, as they will likely be using my Blueprint for the
next four years.
