Career and Education Plan Overview Career and Education Planning Course Purpose

The purpose of the course is to provide students with information they need to start planning their future in a meaningful way, and to help them recognize that high school courses have relevance for their future education and career plans. During the course, students will first use Florida CHOICES (www.flchoices.org), to explore their interests and related careers, and choose a career cluster.

Pasco’s Implementation Plan A workgroup comprised of representative teachers, counselors, supervisors, and administrators has recommended the use of the online, cutting-edge Florida CHOICES Planner as a resource in the consistent delivery of career and educational planning for all Pasco middle school students.

Florida Choices Florida CHOICES (www.flchoices.org) is the state career information delivery system. It provides career and educational exploration and information. Florida CHOICES includes assessments for interests, aptitudes, skills, and values. Accountability reports for management of student usage are retrievable from the Professional Tools section of CHOICES. Educator and Parent Resource materials are also included.

Statutory Obligation Per Section 1003.4156, Florida Statutes, for students to meet middle grades promotion requirements, a Career and Education Planning course must be completed. The Career and Education Planning course must result in a completed personalized academic and career plan for the student; must emphasize technology or the application of technology in career fields; and, beginning in the 2014-2015 academic year, must provide information from the Department of Economic Opportunity’s economic security report as described in Section 445.07, Florida Statutes (Chapter 2012-195, Laws of Florida). Schools must use one of the approved courses to meet this requirement. Some of the approved courses are designated as year-long. In those cases, the classroom teacher can determine which semester to implement the career and education planning competencies. For additional information on the Middle School Career and Education Planning course, go to http://www.fldoe.org/workforce/ced/.
