FAIR data management and tools. A common data language to ensure data stewardship across borders/disciplines based on FAIR principles.

b. Data

Rules of participation for different EOSC actors. An opportunity to comply with existing legal and technical frameworks and increase legal certainty & trust.e. Rules

Architecture of the federated infrastructures as the solution to the current fragmentation in research data infrastructures which are insufficiently interoperable. a. Architecture

Governance of the EOSC, aiming at ensuring EU leadership in data-driven science but requiring new governance frameworks.

Mechanisms/interfaces for accessing EOSC. A simple way for dealing with open data obligations or accessing research data across different disciplines.

d. Access & Interface

Available services from a user perspective. A rich environment offering a wide range of services covering the needs of the users.

The EOSC portal

The EOSC Portal is a European-level entry point to services and resources needed by European researchers to perform science in a collaborative, open and cost efficient way.

A universal entry point, but not exclusive of other access channels.

It will be launched on November 23rd in Wien, during an EOSC event.

Some upcoming key projects / partners for the realisation of EOSC

• Connecting ESFRI Infrastructures through Cluster Projects

(INFRAEOSC-04-2018)

oWhat to expect: greater harmonisation of practices across diciplines, stronger role of ESFRI in defining the EOSC agenda and architecture (rules, services, etc.)

oSome challenges: defining EOSC as a « common platform », how to articulate multiple service delivery channels, etc.

• Support to EOSC Governance: FAIR data uptake and compliance

in all scientific communities (INFRAEOSC-05-c-2018-2019)

oWhat to expect : an operational framework for discussing FAIR & a compliance « badge »

oSome challenges: getting support across scientific communities, scalingout & answering demand for certificates

• Support to EOSC Governance: Coordination of EOSC relevant

national initiatives accross Europe and support to EOSC

prospective service providers (INFRAEOSC-05-b-2018-2019)

Coordination & Support

Some (personal) concluding remarks

• EOSC is not the new philosopher’s stone!

o It will not change bad services & data into gold

o It will not make resources suddenly free for all

• However, there are great benefits to expect from greater

federation, integration and interoperability across resources

o Interoperability is probably the greatest challenge of all (and where the next focus should be)

oThe « common » EOSC platform still needs to be defined

• There is a need for stronger coordination (and leadership?)

across initiatives

oWill the new EOSC governance able to take this up?
