THE "APRON SOCIETY"The "Apron Society" is a group of Dominion neighbors who
have volunteered to help fellow Dominion residents when facing some of life's more difficult challenges. When you or one of your neighbors are in need of a ride to the doctor, a shoulder, a friend, a prayer, a meal or just a smile, we are here to help you! If you are in need of our support, call or email us at [email protected] or 210-621-5745. We'll face your challenge together.
We also have plenty of room for new volunteers to join our ranks! This is a great way to meet other 'big hearted' volunteers that just want to make life a little easier for some of our Dominion neighbors/friends in need! We meet as a group every quarter to socialize and get to know other volunteers. If you would like to be part of this wonderful group, please call or email, 210-621-5745 or [email protected].
DAAG IN ACTIONAn important contribution that the Dominion Animal Advocates
Group (DAAG) made to the community over the past year was removing a number of feral kittens from the streets and placing
them into loving inside homes. Because the kittens were identified while they were young enough to be socialized, they were saved from difficult lives as feral cats and the neighborhood has fewer cats.
One female cat can have three litters of 5 kittens per year. Cats can begin breeding as early as 4-6 months. DAAG's goal is to have no kittens born to feral mothers in our community by ensuring that feral cats are neutered.
Cats that have been neutered and vaccinated have a quarter inch tip removed from their left ear. Please report sightings of feral kittens and cats that have not been ear tipped to DAAG at(210) 854-8055 or (210) 744-1200.

PROPERTY OWNER'S TREE/VEGETATION TRIMMING RESPONSIBILITY FOR ROADWAY SAFETY
The streets of The Dominion are owned by The Dominion Homeowners Association (HOA) and are subject to the rules and regulations of the HOA. The streets must be accessible for emergency response vehicles as well as service vehicles, delivery vehicles, and passenger vehicles. Additionally, as there are no off-street sidewalks in the Dominion, the streets must accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists in a safe manner. A recent street survey has revealed that numerous property owners have allowed their shrubs and trees to grow over the concrete curbs and out into the streets of the Dominion in a manner that impedes emergency response vehicles. as well as pedestrian and bicyclists as well as from safely walking or riding adjacent to the curb.
An ordinance of The City of San Antonio has addressed this safety situation by specifying the minimum clearance of property owner's shrubs and trees that grow out over the streets. To better maintain this issue within our community and prevent the issue form increasing in severity, the following policy is effective within The Dominion.
MAJOR ARTERIAL STREETSThe major arterial streets in the Dominion (Dominion Drive,
Brenthurst Lane, and Ambassador Lane) have significant vehicular traffic but also have significant pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Since these streets have no off-street sidewalks, the safest location for pedestrian and bicycle traffic is immediately adjacent to the curb on each side of the street. Therefore, all property owners with property facing these streets shall maintain their property's shrubs and trees in a manner that:• Shrubs do not extend pass the back of the concrete curb; and• There is an unobstructed clear area on both sides of the street (no
shrubs or tree limbs) that extends at least 6 feet from the curb and has a vertical clearance from the roadway of at least 10 feet; and
• For the remainder of the width of the street, no tree limbs shall be within 14 feet of the street.
ALL OTHER STREETSFor all other streets in the Dominion, the property owners shall
maintain their property's shrubs and trees in a manner that:• Shrubs do not extend pass the back of the concrete curb; and• Shrubs and tree limbs will not obstruct the safe passage of
emergency response vehicles as well service vehicles, delivery vehicles, and passenger vehicles. Additionally, since there are no off-street sidewalks on these streets, these streets must also safely accommodate pedestrians and bicycles. And,
• Where there are medians in the roadways, shrubs and trees shall not extend into the street in any manner than impedes the safe passage of high profile vehicles. And,
• The center of these streets shall have a "vehicle lane for high profile vehicles" unobstructed of shrubs and tree limbs at least 15 feet wide and with a minimum 14 foot vertical clearance from the street.

EMBREY PARTNERS BREAKS GROUND ON LEON SPRINGS DEVELOPMENT
With the promise to "do something special here," San Antonio-based Embrey Partners has broken ground on a 15-acre, 320-unit, multi-family community as part of a larger, mixed-use development that will front Interstate Highway 10 between Leon Creek and historic Leon Springs, Texas. The development is a joint effort of Embrey, New York City-based Case Pomeroy Properties and San Antonio-based Leon Creek, Ltd.
Designed as an upscale, eclectic, pedestrian-friendly environment, the community will pay tribute to both local history and the Old Spanish Trail that once made its way across the front of the property through the late 1800s. First occupancy is scheduled for February 2015.
"We've worked with other landowners to create a place with improved access that offers the ability to drive into the area and safely walk around; read the signage commemorating the historic nature of the area; visit the Aue homestead, old depot and hotel and really get a sense of the historical significance of the area," said Jeff Booth, Embrey's senior managing partner on the project. Against a backdrop of stunning hill country views, residents will also have walkable access to retail and popular local restaurants like Rudy's and The Grill.
The east side of the development backs up to Leon Creek and will overlook homes in the Dominion, one of San Antonio's most exclusive, Hill Country neighborhoods. "We're very excited about developing it in a way that will reflect the quality and timeless architectural appeal the Dominion is known for," added Booth.
Plans call for a "Texas Country French" architectural theme with native limestone, designed by BGO Architects, Dallas. The community will incorporate a spectacular, two-story, 6,397-square-foot clubhouse with a business office, catering kitchen, dining room, fitness center and indoor golf simulator. Extensive outdoor amenities will include a luxury pool with cabanas, cooking areas, a trellis-covered outdoor fireplace and green gathering spaces. "We've

designed this as an executive class lifestyle experience and have made it flexible enough for empty nesters, singles and couples," added Booth.
One-, two- and three-bedroom, upscale apartments will include carriage house units and townhomes and will range in size from 608 square feet to 1,409 square feet. Residents will be able to choose from three interior design finish packages featuring high quality granite countertops and custom wood cabinets, with the option for numerous upgrades typically only found in custom, single family homes. Packages will include designer hardware and lighting, stainless steel appliances and attached private garages. Two premier residential buildings - one flanking the amenity center and the other overlooking the pool area -will offer elevators -a convenience not typically found in this type of residential development.
Financing for the project comes from JP Morgan.
AERATION AND COMPOST Aerating and applying compost to your lawn are excellent ways
to improve its overall health. Both reduce the amount of irrigation needed by increasing the soil's ability to hold and receive water. In other words, these activities create a bigger and better soil sponge.
Although not all soils are alike, they all benefit from the addition of organic matter. Compost is completely decomposed residue of plant and animal material and mulch is the partially decomposed
residue of plants. Unfortunately, compost breaks down rather quickly in our climate
so thin, rocky soil tends not to build up over time even with frequent additions of compost. To increase its water-holding capacity, a small amount of a similar soil may be added.
To achieve maximum benefits from aeration and composting:• Spring and early fall are the best times to aerate and compost
your lawn.• Multiple applications are best, or at the very least once a year.• Be generous; this is one landscape activity where more is actually
better. Many landscapers are eager to assist you with both aeration and
composting, or consider working with your neighbors to rent a core aerator for a day.
LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE The Landscape Committee has been working on many projects
and, with spring right around the corner, you will start seeing some of the work commence. We continue to update our irrigation system, and that work will begin throughout the community. Also, two islands in the Legends will be rebuilt and replanted and many of the islands along Dominion Drive will be upgraded with new plantings. It is very important that we keep the ongoing drought

Empty Nest Chance To Chase Forgotten DreamsMiddle age woes are hard enough to deal with, but throw in empty
nest syndrome and it is a recipe for potential depression. Psychologists at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston say not to look at it as an ending, but as the beginning of a new stage in life with more time to travel, develop new hobbies, rediscover forgotten dreams and get to know your spouse all over again.
"Parents have channeled all of their energy into their children for so long they may not know what to do with their time once they leave," said Dr. James Bray, associate professor of family and community medicine at BCM.
Empty nest syndrome often leads to divorce, but parents should assume that leaving your spouse will make the unhappiness go away.
"Marriage takes time and energy, so make the effort to get reacquainted,” Bray said.
Talk with friends to reevaluate goals and take note of some lifelong dreams you haven't had time to accomplish, said Bray. There may be more time to take dance classes, travel, exercise or go back to college to retool skills. The empty nest transition usually lasts six months to a year, depending on how well parents can adjust to their newly found freedom.

Situated in the historic setting of Leon Springs, between The Dominion and Fair Oaks Ranch, The Lodge at Leon Springs is one of the Hill Country's
true gems. Family-owned for eighteen years, the fourteen-acre property showcases majestic trees, a lovely spring-fed pond and is home to an array of
wildlife species, including ducks, fish, deer, and turkey to name a few. The animal companions
of our residents are also welcomed as part of our community and considered extended family, as well.
Sit and enjoy the beauty of nature at its best and the serenity of the historic Leon Springs.
The Lodge at Leon Springs is pleased to announce the addition of several newly-constructed one bedroom cottages, broadening independent living choices available for seniors in our community. Our spacious one and two bedroom cottages (800 & 1,500 sq ft, respectively) are each equipped with large screened patios, a fully functional kitchen as well as a laundry room with washer and dryer. Cottage residents enjoy dining options that include the delivery of three hot meals to their home(s) or joining friends and fellow residents in our assisted living home. For the comfort and convenience of our residents, The Lodge provides housekeeping, as well as facility and grounds maintenance. Activities are offered and designed to enhance quality of life and encourage new friendships.
While some communities require a substantial, long-term, financial commitment, The Lodge at Leon
Springs takes a different approach. While we prioritize the physical and emotional well-being of seniors, we respect their financial concerns, as well. To schedule a tour of our new one bedroom cottages and our
unique community, contact Steve Kitchen at 210-410-3864 or [email protected]

BLOOD PRESSURETAKE CONTROL OF THE SILENT KILLER
High blood pressure, or hypertension, is sometimes called the silent killer because there are often no symptoms. That’s why keeping track of blood pressure is one of the most important things a person can do to stay healthy, said doctors at Baylor College of Medicine.
Left untreated, hypertension, can cause organ damage over time, leading to heart attack, blindness, kidney failure or stroke, said Dr. Biykem Bozkurt, professor of medicine at BCM.
Some factors that are associated with hypertension are diabetes, family history of hypertension, being overweight, taking in too much sodium, drinking excessive alcohol and smoking. Generally a healthy reading is 120/80, and hypertension diagnosis is made at 140/90. People considered prehypertensive generally have readings that fall between 120/80 and 140/90. Doctors always check blood pressure as part of appointments and there are also many locations where blood pressure machines are available for anyone to have their pressure checked. Bozkurt advises talking to a doctor to determine if your reading is at a healthy level rather than taking the machine's reading at face value.
“For a relatively healthy person not suffering from any other illnesses, only a few lifestyle changes like diet modifications and exercise may be needed,” said Bozkurt.
