We hope that you will find something of interest in this year’s prospectus, we believe that it is never too late to learn a new skill or a hobby and as a consequence the courses we run allow you to fit your learning in and around your work and family. You will find listed here many of the courses and workshops that we offer throughout the year, whether you are looking to upskill for work or just for fun we are bound to have something for you.

If you are unsure about which course to choose we can provide you with advice and guidance to ensure you make the right decision, or if you are looking for something not listed please contact us as we will always do our best to accommodate your needs, if not here then at one of our other centres throughout the borough.

This is a course for complete beginners. It assumes no previous knowledge of using a computer. It will provide the opportunity for you to learn how to operate a PC, and use the windows environment. You will also have the opportunity to learn:-

Intended for beginners to web design, this fun and friendly course will help you create a basic website using

the popular WordPress environment, which powers millions of websites worldwide.

WordPress makes it easy for anyone to create their first website. You can manage everything through a

simple dashboard without having to mess with complex code. You will learn how to set up a free account

at WordPress.com and use the Dashboard features.

Choose a theme and change your site’s appearance, write your first content and add new pages. Make your

This course is ideal for developing hobby, personal, club or community websites. You are also welcome to

create a site showcasing a small business. However, please be aware that due to restrictions on the free

WordPress.com account, this course does not include the actual selling of products through a website.

This course is designed as a follow on course from the beginner’s class and you will be incorporating all the skills you have acquired into new designs and arrangements for the upcoming season. You will use seasonal flowers with traditional and contemporary ideas to create your floral designs. Flower Arranging - Funeral & Sympathy

This short course focuses entirely on funeral flowers. This will include a classic and traditional design. You will use a variety of mediums including oasis, twigs, straw and wire, as well as biodegradable and sustainable materials. This is an excellent opportunity to focus specifically on this area of flower arranging.


Fashion Sewing | Beginners

Are you feeling inspired from The Great British Sewing Bee? Are you dabbling with the idea of picking up your needles and thread, then have a go at our beginners fashion sewing class.If you are interested in learning the basics of sewing then this is for you, it will teach you the various techniques used in the dressmaking such as:

• Constructing and neatening open and closed seams, • Inserting a zip, • Making buttonholes, • Attaching waistbands, • Neckline facings, • Attaching bias binding and much more.

You will learn how to produce a portfolio of samples and how to measure individual body shapes relating these measurements to dressmaking patterns; look at fashion fabrics available to make your garments. Various technical topics are introduced to give you the knowledge to decide on your chosen garments. An introduction to the sewing machine and over-locker workings is available for anyone new to sewing to enable you to have the confidence to make items of your own choice.

Extend your dressmaking skills and learn further professional techniques on our Fashion sewing for improvers.The course will help you with your dressmaking techniques as you construct a garment of your choice, if you are interested in making a simple fashion item, such as a skirt or top then this is for you. Various technical topics are introduced to give you the knowledge to make other chosen garments. Guidance and assistance is given throughout the course to give you the knowledge to make your chosen garments.You will be given guidance with pattern and fabric selection in the first session so it is advisable not to purchase these until after week one.You will need to have attended our beginner’s course or have sewing experience to attend.


Cake Decorating and Sugar Craft | Beginners

If you want to learn the basics of cake decorating this course is for you, you will learn the correct way to cover a cake. How to make royal icing achieving, the correct consistencies used for various piping techniques. You will learn about the different pastes and correct usage, and gain the skill and knowledge to make moulded flowers. This course is for total beginners and will allow you to develop your skills at an individual level in cake decorating. It is suitable for anyone who would like to gain experience of creating and decorating their own celebration cakes using sugar paste, flower paste, icing and marzipan. Each term you will make a cake suitable for the season, during the winter term all items will have a Christmas theme, on completion of the course you will have a fully decorated Christmas cake based on your own design. Spring term will focus on Easter. Enjoy your evening of learning in a warm friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

A follow on to our incredibly popular Beginners class, it builds on all of the skills already taught and offers different ways of creating flowers and models to enhance your cakes in a friendly relaxed atmosphere. You will be taught how to create wired flowers, enhancing them with dusts for a realistic effect and develop your modelling skills by using a variety of techniques. This will give you the inspiration to create your own designs for all the family as once you have learnt further techniques you will be able to create your own ideas with confidence. It is open to learners who have already completed a beginner’s course.


Cake Decorating - Cupcakes | Mixed Abilities

Create your very own tasty and attractive treats with this cupcake decorating class. A lovely day learning how to make your own buttercream which you will pipe onto your cakes in a range of styles before topping them off with your handmade decorations.You will need to bring your own cupcakes which are ready to decorate.

Art - Portraits This course will help you to gain an understanding of portraiture principles and apply these to create a unique portrait of your own chosen subject.The course will begin by outlining how to create accurate facial proportions and move on to shading techniques and colour blending. Throughout the course we will focus on specific facial features and how to draw these effectively. The main medium used will be pencil and colour pencils, however you can bring your own chosen materials in which to complete your portrait if preferred. Overall the course aims to be informative and helpful whilst providing a relaxed atmosphere for you to express yourself and explore your creative skills.

Art Master Class - A Portrait in AcrylicsWe will look at the anatomy of the face, capturing a likeness and acrylic techniques for painting skin tones, everyone will work from the same source photo so they will not be required to bring a picture of someone. Learners will require their own paints and brushes and a canvas of 16x20 inches.

Art Master Class - Being Bold with WatercoloursWildlife’ a day working with mark making and texture with wet in wet watercolour techniques and finishing with a dramatic wildlife painting that captures lots of atmosphere with bold colours and textures. Learners will need a pad of good quality watercolour paper at A3 in size as a minimum, tube paints, brushes etc.

A complete introduction to playing the guitar for those who have never played a noteThe course will feature

• How to tune the guitar • How to count time• How to play a basic rhythm • How to play a basic song accompaniment• How to play three basic chords

As the course is quite short, you must be aware that some minimal practice will be required between sessions. A guitar (Acoustic or UNAMPLIFIED Electric), strung with all six strings will be required.


Guitar | Intermediate

A guitar course aimed at mixed abilities focussing mainly on American-style music from the 1950s to the present day. The focus will be on Blues and Classic Rock but will also encompass other musical styles too. Learn how to use chords and scales, lines riffs and melody, concentrating on how they all work together in various songs and song forms.A typical course covers three of four songs in detail, featuring multiple arrangement parts, melody and improvisation. You will learn these different parts and also get the chance to play them in a format that is similar to the experience of to playing in a real band.Normally, the minimum requirement is for the learner to have some limited playing experience, and demonstrate a little dexterity and co-ordination by strumming in time and changing between a few basic chords. For learners with no experience of playing the guitar, the course “Guitar for Absolute Beginners” would be more suitable and would provide a complete beginner with the skills necessary to take part in this course.

Deaf AwarenessThere are 10 million people who are deaf or who have hearing loss in the UK.Do you or your employees have regular contact with customers or colleagues who are deaf or who have a hearing loss?Being deaf aware is good business practice and will attract more business. The charity Action on Hearing Loss have found in their research that 7 in 10 hearing aid wearers would choose a business over a competitor if the staff were deaf aware.We are offering Deaf Awareness training courses which can be held on site at your workplace or at The Dormston Adult Education Centre.At the end of the course you will be able to;

• Identify and implement solutions where people who are deaf or have a hearing loss face accessibility and communication barriers

• Recognise and respond to the different ways people who are deaf or have a hearing loss communicate

• Understand and demonstrate how you can engage and communicate with people who are deaf or have a hearing loss.

Our Deaf Awareness course is a half day course that runs over a three-hour session, a Certificate of Attendance will be issued upon completion of the course. This is an ideal introduction to our full Level 1 course.Please contact the centre for further information or to make a booking.

Introduction to Sign LanguageHave you ever had an interest in Sign Language? Then now is your chance to find out what it is all about. An Introduction to Sign Language course will take you right from the basics and equip you with the necessary Sign Language skills to aid communication with Deaf people. It will include:

• Finger-spelling the alphabet, numbers 1-10.• Sign introductory information.• Hold a basic conversation in sign giving personal information & questioning people to obtain

information.• Read basic sign• Interpret a basic story• Produce appropriate hand-shapes

Learn some basic vocabulary and grammar, and decide if you want to progress to the level 1 qualification.


Sign Language | BSL Qualification Level 1

Have you always wanted to learn how to communicate with deaf people using Sign Language? Or are you thinking about learning a new skill but haven’t yet made the first step forward? You may have other reasons for wanting to learn sign language and to learn more about deaf people, such as having a family member who is deaf or even a work colleague. This is what Level 1 BSL is all about; to enable you to start your journey towards becoming someone who can communicate efficiently with deaf people.Signature Level 1 Award in British Sign Language is designed to enable learners to communicate with deaf people in British Sign Language (BSL). A range of topics are studied that involve simple, everyday language use. It provides an introduction to BSL and is suitable for all learners.The course is divided into three units and learners are required to pass all units to gain the qualification.The units include the following topics:

• BSL 101 Introduction to BSL – meeting people, using numbers, weather transport and directions• BSL 102 Conversational BSL – at home, people, animals and objects, using numbers, interests and

activities, and weather• BSL103 BSL at School, College or work – getting around, exchanging information, refreshments, and

using numbersAssessments take place during normal class time and the assessment fees are payable separately.This is a course for beginners and no prior knowledge of BSL is require.

This qualification is designed to enable you to develop an ability to communicate with Deaf people using BSL in a range of familiar contexts, participating in longer and more open-ended exchanges than at level one. The course will develop functional communication in BSL about a range of real life, routine and daily experiences. You will be able to deal with more routine language tasks and have sufficient grasp of grammar to cope with some non-routine tasks.The course is divided into three units and candidates are required to pass all units to gain the Signature qualification.

structures and phrases and use BSL appropriate to the context of the discussion.• BSL 203 - develops your conversational skills This unit covers topics to help you converse with a deaf person. You will learn how to understand routine

questions and responses, requests and views and understand the main points of routine conversations.The course is lively and fun you will gain a qualification to add to your CV. You will meet new like-minded people who want to communicate and mix with the deaf community and you will meet deaf people at local deaf events.Assessments take place throughout the course during normal class time and the assessment fees are payable separately You must have a Signature / CACDP BSL Level 1 qualification or equivalent.

people• Communicate confidently, clearly and effectively in BSL using increasingly accurate, complex & varied

This French Beginners course is designed for you if you have little or no experience of learning the French language. Whilst on this course you will build your knowledge and understanding of vocabulary and grammar and develop your communication skills for practical purposes. Spanish | Beginners

This course runs over three terms which progressively build on one another.This course is an introduction to the Spanish language and way of life for the purpose of practical communication. You will develop essential speaking, listening, reading and writing skills as well as a solid understanding of the structure of the language.Whether you are learning Spanish for travelling, working abroad or with foreign companies, the Spanish Beginners course will enable you to communicate confidently on a basic level in everyday situations, socialise and not feel out of place in the country you are visiting.


Spanish | Improvers

This course is the follow-up to Spanish Beginners (Year 1). It runs over three terms that progressively build on one another and is aimed at people who have done approx. three terms at beginners levelYou will learn new structures and vocabulary around different topics to extend your range of expression. You will build on and advance your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills as well as cover the main points in Spanish grammar. This course will enable you to communicate with more variation and fluency, so you feel confident in most everyday situations with Spanish native speakers.


Black Sheep Belly Dance – Synchronised Tribal Style A Fun Introduction to Belly Dance in the form of Improvised Tribal style!A fun ten week course that helps build confidence, inner strength and many new skills. During the course learners will discover the beautiful art of Belly Dance in the form of Synchronised Group Improvised Tribal Style (SGI). This is a beautiful and friendly style of dance that encourages every single learner to develop their knowledge and new skills in a supportive and gentle manner. You will learn basic hip, arm and hand movements, zills (finger cymbals) work and how to travel with your dance! Well here is the perfect course for you! ‘Strictly Dance’ looks at the energetic side of Latin American Dance focusing on styles including The Jive, Cha,cha,cha, Rhumba and Samba. You will learn basic steps, technique, an understanding of style through a variety of dance warm-ups, routines, partner work and cools downs. Zumba – St Andrews Church | Beginners

Zumba is a dance fitness class that incorporates Latin and International music and dance which create a dynamic, exciting workout. This class combines fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body to achieve a unique balance of cardio and muscle toning. This class can be less intense and move at a slower pace than the regular Zumba Fitness classes if required. Gentle Zumba is good for our more active mature adults, those who have not exercised for a while, or who just want to take it slow and not have to jump.


Start Your Own Business | Beginners Ever thought of Starting your Own Business? It’s really not that difficult. This course will give you all the necessary information needed to set up and run your own business. Areas covered include:

Flower Arranging - Christmas Start Christmas here! Come along and join us for a fun festive morning. We will show you the skills needed to make a traditional door wreath or a more contemporary door decoration for that bespoke look - the choice is yours! We will also be creating a beautiful table centre from traditional and elegant combinations of red, greens and gold for your Christmas dining table. A day of seasonal inspiration to really get you in a Christmassy mood. Both designs will last over the whole festive period. Tea/Coffee and mince pies provided.

Flower Arranging - Funeral Flowers This workshop focuses entirely on funeral flowers. This will include a classic and traditional design. How to Find us?Located on Mill Bank, the Centre is just a short walk from the Centre of Sedgley situated on the A459. In the centre of Sedgley is ‘The Bull Ring’ a 5 way island. Mill Bank is located off this island, to the side of the Red Lion pub. The Centre is located at the top of this road.

We are the central pivot for a number of local areas.

INDUCTIONAt the beginning your course, your first session will include completion of your enrolment information, initial assessments, together with an induction to the centre, safeguarding and your course.FEES/HOW TO ENROLThere are different ways to enrol and pay for the courses that we offer:To assist you in choosing the correct course we hold an open evening each term where you can come along and meet our tutors and enrol. Choose the course you wish to attend and call the centre, you can enrol from 1st August 2016. Most courses are suitable for telephone enrolment, however on your first evening you will need to produce.• Evidence of Identity • Evidence of Residency • Evidence of Concessions (if claimed)In person at the Centre, this will need to be during the centre opening times of: Monday – Friday 5.00pm - 8.30pm Saturday 9.30am - 2.00pm.Please do not wait until the last minute to enrol as you may find that your chosen course is full or that we have had to cancel due to low enrolment numbers.
