Mother’s Day Stall Thank you to the Mother’s Day Stall committee for all their hard work and organising a great variety of gifts for the children to purchase. The children really enjoyed selecting the gifts and I’m sure all the mums loved receiving them.

Respectful Interactions I mentioned respectful interactions in a previous newsletter and I would like to remind the community of this. I realise at times issues arise which can cause frustration but we need to remember to be respectful. The children are now working on the value of respect and it is important that as a community we support it and be effective role models for our children.

Bikes Just a reminder to lock up bikes securely when using the bike rack. Please make sure the lock is around the frame and secured to the rack. There has already been an attempt to steal certain bikes so I would really encourage you to ensure the bikes are locked up securely.

Festival The plans for the Festival are well on the way. Braid Matthews has the rosters for each stall on display in the corridor opposite the writing board. Please put your name down if you can assist in any way.

Our School The word is getting out that Dorset PS is an amazing school offering great programs with caring and dedicated teachers. Geoff and I are taking quite a lot of tours for 2017. If you know of

anyone that is interested in attending Dorset PS please get the word out there about our wonderful school. Word of mouth is a powerful advertisement and counts for a lot. Especially during education week would be an ideal time for visitors/prospective parents and students to see our school in action.

Swimming Our revised swimming program begins next week. I am looking forward to the children being part of the program at Vicky Fields and value parents feedback in this regard. This is a significant change for our school and I am sure it will be a rewarding and positive experience.

Long Service Leave I mentioned in last weeks newsletter that Geoff and Ian will be in charge of the school in my absence but have now decided to make a change. Geoff and Justin will be in charge and Ian will replace Justin in the classroom. I apologise if this change causes any inconvenience but I am sure they will do an outstanding job. Thanks for your continued support.

Readiness Evening Thank you to the Foundation team for organising a tremendous Readiness Evening. The night was well attended and many questions were asked and answered. The Foundation team did a fabulous job organising the event and highlighting Dorset PS’s strengths. Please spread the word! Regards, Palma Coppa

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen/Garden News After the recent harvest of our olives, they are 1 week into their 5-6 week process

being kept in brine, which draws out the bitterness in the olives. After the 5-6 weeks has passed, the brine will be discarded and replaced with olive oil and herbs such as rosemary or thyme, etc. Once this step has been completed, they will be ready to use in our recipes. Planning is underway for the food which will be served from the SAKG Kitchen for the Dorset Festival. Any assistance on the day prior to the festival (Friday) with preparing food or setting up in the SAKG will be greatly appreciated. Also, if any parents/grandparents, etc would be interested in helping out in the SAKG Kitchen on the day of the festival, assistance will be needed both in the kitchen and taking food orders and handling money. Please put your name down to help on the SAKG list

for the Dorset Festival, located outside the staffroom.

Thanks, Gregg Hansford

Chaplain's Chat With Dave! Caring for Others This week, grade six student Caitlyn Young has helped me create a great story teaching the values of personal and family responsibility. I am impressed with her story, I hope you are too! Among the many beautiful animals at Weribee Zoo there lives a teenage giraffe named Lucy Longneck. Lucy is in charge of making sure the baby giraffes are able to get enough leaves to eat. There are two things that make it difficult to do this task well. First, Lucy loves leaves, and some of the best, greenest, juiciest leaves are put down low for the baby giraffes to eat. Lucy knows those leaves are for the babies but she is often overwhelmed with the desire to eat them herself. Second, the elephants often rampage through the area. They stomp on leaves that are on the ground and knock over the small trees the baby giraffes can reach. One day as Lucy watched the baby giraffes eating some of the juiciest leaves, trying very hard not to eat them herself, her personal struggle was interrupted by an elephant stampede coming across the valley. Lucy could see that the elephants were heading directly for the baby giraffes. She put herself between the elephants and the babies, to protect them. But, as the elephants got closer, she realised they weren’t going to stop. It was too late to move and Lucy was knocked over – which is a very dangerous thing to happen to a giraffe. The keeper rushed out to make sure she was ok. The elephants could tell that they had done something very mean. They walked over as the keeper checked all of Lucy’s legs and neck. They swung their trunks and rumbled deep words of apology. Lucy could tell they were saying: “Weee arrrree Sorrry, Luucy!” Lucy looked over at the baby giraffes eating the leaves and then back at the elephants. She turned her head back and forth – from elephants to baby giraffes – until the elephants understood they had almost hurt the babies and Lucy had been protecting them. The elephants nodded in understanding and walked to another area of the zoo. The keeper helped Lucy up and showed her to a corner of the zoo she had never explored before. To her amazement there were many trees just the right height for her to eat from and they were full of beautiful, juicy, green leaves! By Dave and Caitlyn

Helpers The information boards regarding community helpers have been placed up near the front office. Please have a look and see if you could assist us with some of our wonderful stalls and games. Without the help of our wider community network an event like this would be near impossible, so we thank-you for your ongoing support and look forward to seeing many parents and family helpers put their names on the support boards.

Stall Holders We have opened the opportunity to our community if they wish to hold a stall at our festival. There are very limited places- a 3x3 metre space is $50 for the event. Stall Holders must provide their own tables and equipment. Please fill out a form located at the office if you wish to participate in the event. Unfortunately we cannot double up

on stall businesses so these will be addressed by a first in best-dressed basis.

Books The Dorset Arts Committee is looking for YOUR used BOOKS. We will be having a second-hand book stall at the festival and would love book donations. If you have any books for this event please pass them onto Brett Speed as he would greatly appreciate them.

Facebook Event To help spread the word and keep updated with the festival please like our Facebook page and share with your friends! www.facebook.com/dorsetfamilyfestival

Sponsorship The Festival Committee are currently looking for sponsors to help make our event a memorable one. If you know a business that may want to get on board, please see me and I will send them an information pack.

Science In Science this term the Grade 3 /4 's are looking at magnetic force. They are

answering questions such as: 'What types of materials are attracted to magnets?' and 'What can the magnetic force pass through?' The Grade 5 / 6 's

have been looking at what energy is, and how energy can be harnessed. Recently they modified soft drink cans to see what materials worked best to

absorb the energy from the sun. Thanks, Sally Matheou

Walk To School On the 20th May it is time to leave those cars and buses behind and walk to school instead! ’Walk to School’ is an annual event that encourages students to walk or even ride to school. It is good to see that many of our students at Dorset Primary School are doing this already. Last year collectively through the month of October, Victorian students and their families walked more than 1.2 million kilometres which is equivalent to walking around the world almost 32 times. Walking, riding or scooting to school can help children to achieve the recommended 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity each day and adopt physical habits for life. We are looking forward to your participation!

Breakfast Club We are in desperate need of donations for breakfast club. Any

donations of bread, milo, jam, vegemite or margarine would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be handed in to the front office.

Swimming Swimming notices are now overdue!!! If you have not yet returned your form you will have received another form

yesterday. Even if your child is not attending the form needs to be returned to the school marked ‘not attending’. We need this back ASAP to ensure the program runs smoothly!

Thank you for your support.

Making kids smile! This week we are going to be focussing on everything positive, from changing the way we think about ourselves and the way we react to the world around us to offering kindness and respect to others. We’re going to do a lot of group and collaboration work including building bridges that will support a heavy load, designing and painting a mural, and creating a complete strategy for a new game to play in the hall. All of these activities are designed to align with our ‘Better Buddies’ program, which provides children with the opportunity to grow in their social learning and creates an environment of respect for everyone. Remember that Camp Australia is always open to new students joining us in the afternoons or in the mornings! Bookings are to be made online, but if the child has a Camp Australia account they can be added as a casual for any service. It is important for parents to remember that if there are any changes to prior arrangements with us that we are informed as soon as possible. Also, don’t forget to update your contact list online along with any other changes in personal details and emergency contacts. Remember that during term 1 and term 4 there is a “No hat: No outside play” policy at Camp Australia in line with government regulations. We look forward to seeing you soon, The Camp Australia Team. Chocolates

Dorset Primary School is currently having a chocolate drive. This is one of the most successful fundraisers of the year. We thank the school

community for their success so far. Many full boxes have already been sold and many more families have taken extra boxes to sell. So much

determination is put into selling the chocolates and as a school we couldn’t be more grateful to have such a supportive group of parents,

helpers and students. All chocolates are $1.00 each.

Each box contains 50 chocolates, therefore $50.00 a box. Please return all money and unsold chocolates to the school by

Monday 11th July. If you would like a second box of chocolates to sell, or have any queries, please call us on 9725 5038 or speak to Cynthia Helleren in the office.

Our special thanks! Anyone who sells an entire box of

chocolates will receive a bonus chocolate frog and a ticket to go into

the draw to be one of three lucky people who will win their choice of a

prize to the value of $100.
